View Full Version : Pondering buying a 8800GTS
Hi All,
I'm in form to upgrade something on my pc, and i'm thinking along the lines of a upgrade to the 6800GT that currently resides. I've seen a lot of topics ref graphic corruption and this newish generation of cards and lower than expected frame rates.
Are the 8800 series compatible with IL2?
I'm currently running the following which seem fairly balanced to me so perhaps someone with a simular setup might be able to give me guide on target framerates and quality settings:
Athlon 64 X2 @2500
1024 2 2 2 8 BH5 Ram @ 225Mhz
6800GT 256
19' Trinitron
Asus AN8-E (Single PCIExpress x 16 lane)
4 * WD 320 in RAID 0
All watercooled by Asetek
TIR 4
CH Fighterstick
CH Rudder Pedals
TIA

I use a BFG 8800GTS 320mb, driver version 160.02 (this is for nvidia's Quadro range of graphics cards, gives very good quality apparently). No problems, perfect settings, 16*aa, 16*anisotropic, around 54 fps in Black Death track. Very nice card for other games also, such as Half-Life 2, COD, Company of Heroes, all in lovely 1650*1050 resolution, helped by AMD Athlon 64x2 3800 OC'd to 2.7
Cheers for the quick reply Banger, looks like I shall be shopping in the morn http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
When did you get the 3800+ X2?, I can't get more than 2.55 out of mine and thats with an Asetek Extreme pump, dual 120mm Rad + the Antartica cpu cooler which is fairly good by most accounts http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/compsmash.gif

Mine is the socket 939 version, bought just over a year ago if I remember correctly. Its fitted in a Gigabyte K8NXP-SLI Nvidia Nforce 4 board. I use 2gb Corsair memory, but with the memory multiplier held down, and the clockspeed set to 270mhz, multiplier 10x. I am doing this from memory, but I think my memory is capable of 500mhz (double sided) but I keep it down to around 488 or something using the memory divider in the Bios. I had to up the cpu voltage to 1.6 volts IIRC, and it is aircooled with a Arctic Cooling Freezer Pro heatsink/fan. I get temps of no more than 44 degrees. Both cores sing along sweetly.

I went from a 6800 Ultra to a 7950GT and saw a small increase in average frame rates, a good improvement in minimum frame rates, but the bigger benefit was that I could run more anti-aliasing and play at water=2 than I could with the old card and water=1. I think you will see an even bigger performance increase with the 8800GTS.
