I'm actually amazed that after all this time playing SH4, I never bothered to take this into consideration. Here's the first part of the question....does anyone know if the game actually models the number of depth charges carried by an escort? The second part, if the game does "keep count", has anyone ever outlasted the escorts during an attack.

I've been patrolling the Java Sea, and made contact with an invasion fleet. 4 Battleships, 2 heavy cruisers, 3 light cruisers and eight destroyers. Got off a shot with my 4 bow tubes, scored 2 hits on a BB, the other 2 mis-fired on the way in.

Only have about 100 feet of water to work with, and the 3 light cruisers and 8 destroyers are more than slightly ****ed-off at me. I've managed to avoid any serious damage up to now, but these guys are hanging on, and don't seem concerned about getting back to the heavies anytime soon. We've been playing cat and mouse for the better part of 2 hours, and I'm trying to figure out my options. If the game models the depth charge load out, I might be able to just wait it out. If it doesn't, unless they get bored soon, I think I am looking at a very unhappy ending.

Yes it can, but by default it carries around 40 of em per DC rack.

The second part, if the game does "keep count", has anyone ever outlasted the escorts during an attack.

If the mod your using has cut down the number of DC's then yeah. But if they're detecting you, they'll keep making "dry runs".

If anyones wondering.. no, i havent cut the number of DC's in TM. That would be too nice of me. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/icon_twisted.gif

Once I had 12 dd's and company on me. I usually go much deeper than the red line and get out OK.
Just make sure you have no damage.

I even started playing with them to see how they would react, cut off silent running, speeding up, ect....Seems they respond well, so I cut that crap out...about got sunk.

If you only have 100ft get as close as you can to the bottom and go 1/2 knot some skillful steering and use of the decoys should help you out but I got bombed and hunted for I guess 4 hours once before they as long last lost track of me.

I was in a position similar to yours early-on in my career. This DD just wouldn't quit, long after the others gave up. He had me zeroed for sure and dawn was approaching. I feared an air strike so, I felt my only option at the time was to slug it out. Lucky for me, w/the help of my decoys, I was able to ram 1 up his arse after he slowed for a listen. He had me locked in the circle for a while there. If you're in the shallows, one advantage is a short time to periscope depth. I'm not trying to tell you what to do, of course. Yeah, if it were only one or two escorts, I would probably try and slug it out. But as I said, it's a pack or destroyers and light cruisers. No way I'm gonna be able to fight them all off and get away. I'll let you know how it turns out.

I'm reading 'The UBoat Peril' by Bob Whinney, who was WW2 escort captain..
He describes many things which are not correctly represented in the game (which could be).
His boat took on over a 100 DCs, and they'd dispense between 6 - 20 DC's in an attack, depending on the assurity of success. He actually broke just about every rule in the book, with great success. He also mentions 500ft DC settings for Uboats
The killing range of a 300Kg DC being 13 yards - ~14 metres

If there was a group of Escorts, they'd take turns attacking, so as you could imagine, that for a salvo of 8 DCs, 3 ships could attack a total of about 50+ times, each attack interval ~10 minutes = 6 - 8 hours of pure pleasure http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Ahh, you must be out of torps or unable to reload (silent running). A pack of DDs is a problem but, unless I'm wrong, you don't have to worry about being DCed by Light Cruisers. I once took out 3 DDs (that were pinging me) escorting a convoy and then, piecemealed the convoy. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Well, I made it, right after I re-loaded the game, 1 DD came in, dropped every DC he had, along with 4 bags of ship's garbage, 3 chairs, the ward room piano, and yes, the galley sink. Sustained 70% hull damage, all offensive systems destroyed, the majority of the crew "in the pink". I think the only thing that saved me was the water was too shallow to sink below crush depth (which probably wasn't much past the 110' bottom), and the loud, resounding clang the hull made when it hit.

Got back to the surface after they left, managed to limp back to base and got a "new" sub. Well, actually it was one class older than the one I banged up, which was an interesting first for me.

There was an above mentioned issue of DD runing out of charges. I had destroyed the racks on one DD (there was a nice fire back there) and he ignored me, pacing along side me at 700 yards while I, at flank, submerged proceeded to sink a cargo. I disposed of the DD later when the oppertunity presented itself, refilled torpedo at a base a day and a half away, and managed to catch up with the now escortless convoy and finish the last 5 ships, incase ya were wondering. So, in short, if they run out or the system is destroyed, they may or may not continue to harass you.

Does the game have any advanced depth charges that were being used at the time?

For example I've yet to see any destroyers throw depth charges forward or 30 ft to their sides.

nor have I experined any hedge hog multi launch charges!

Hello das heist Erica,

The destroyers will throw depth charges to the side later in the war. If you are doing a career this will happen as this type of thing is invented. Same with your radar and other feature you get as the war progresses.
