I set-up my new system last weekend and I've been trying to diagnose why I've been getting lock-ups since....

Oh yeah, did I mention that in one of the lock-ups....I lost my registry and had to re-install Windows?? /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-mad.gif

I've been through so much crap this week, I almost tried Win XP! NOT! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

Anyway, here's the four main culprits to my problems:

1. BIOS anti-virus.

2. Intel Application Accelerator.

3. ZipDrive software (They must of figured out the problem, they just released a new version this week that works! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-mad.gif )

4. Windows really needs a floppy-disk installed on a your system to be happy (This includes WinXP). I decided that I really don't need a floppy-drive anymore, since I have a Zip250 built-in, so I disabled the floppydisk controller....WinME locked-up on install until I re-enabled the controller! Even after I gave the stupid M$ crapware it's beloved controller, it would hang at odd-times, looking for the floppy-drive....so I gave it a floppy-drive and it is happy now....sheesh!

After going through my system with a fine-tooth comb (#*%&*$#!!!!), I think I have a stable O/S once more....I went through the a different version of the same crap with my last system that I built!

I have a feeling that someday, generations will look upon this period of computer use as pre-historic and wonder why we put up with the crap that M$ dishes out to us....lol!

My new system:

P4 2.4GhZ/533 FSB
Asus P4T533-C Motherboard
1024MB Samsung RDRAM
Aopen Siluro GF4 4600
WD-60GB-7200 HD
Toshiba DVD/CDRW
SB Audigy Platinum

Anyway, I'm off to reformat and do a clean install....hope to be back before FB is released! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

Love the cartoon Taz. LMAO.

As far as your other probems go, just remember my favorite piece of technical advice..

"When you've tried everything else...Hit it with a bigger hammer."

You might not be able to play IL2 on it anymore...But at least your hang-ups and crashes will be a thing of the past!!!! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I found the performance really increased when I changed processors. My current spec is:

P4 2.75Ghz (1.6A)
512MB PC2700 Cas 2
Geforce 4 Ti 4400
SB Live!

IL2 runs nicely now in 1280x960

Whaddaya mean, "I almost installed WinXP! NOT!"

So many people express negative feelings towards XP. And when you ask them why, they say "It looks ugly" and/or "I can`t get used to it". Well, the XP look can be disabled and you can easily get the Win 2000 look if you like, by selecting it as your theme. As for getting used to, do you still buy vinyl records because you couldn`t get used to a CD player? (Sound freaks out there, don`t mess up my argument!)

I can`t tell you which OS is the best for games, but a lot of people out there certainly speak for XP. Win ME? It`s not exactly popular with the gaming crowd. I believe.

The Intel Application Accelerator, though, you should throw away. I installed it and ended up having to reformat my drive. Seems really buggy to me.

Finally, a floppy station should not be required. I have installed both XP and 2000 without having one at all. It is of course practical to have one the day somethings goes wrong which makes you unable to start installing from your CD ROM...or if you want to do a thorough virus scan.

And BTW, I am not a Win XP retailer...

Edin - I'm intrigued by your signature screenshot. Quite like it. What sim is it from please?

Seems pretty stupid for floppy drives to even come with computers anymore.

They need to drop them now to get people off old technology sooner rather than later.

There are so many better ways to save data. I really like the usb keychain flash sticks they have now. Some of them hold up to 1gb.

Out with old I say.

I agree with zjulik XP is amazing once you get used to it. Whats the problem nowdays? Are ppl afraid of change? For the love of god! It's the INFORMATION AGE!
