We been hacked again!
Who ever did you better run because i will hunt you down!
Well i am cooling down so do we have a backup for the forums?

DDSS1303
10-16-2008, 06:42 PM
Aw crap. Well if no one else has 'em I got backups of at least most of the fan fics.

Mr.Dark
10-16-2008, 06:44 PM
Mine would be one of them, right?

DDSS1303
10-16-2008, 07:06 PM
^_^u That's why I said "most of the fan fics." I decided to wait to copy yours until I got Microsoft Office because of all the little icons. My computer didn't like them without it. But I only just recently got MS Office on my computer so I never did get to get all of it. And there weren't many on line caches of it. All I really have of I Am Darkness is the very beginning up to part 8 (which hasn't even been on the forums in forever) and Episodes 48 and 49.

Though with any luck, the forums will be completely revived like they were last time. I just try to keep the fan fics saved just in case for some reason the forums can't be revived.

ANd if they do get revived this time I'll make sure to copy yours now that I have the ability to.

DDSS1303
10-16-2008, 07:18 PM
The tavern? I don't care how inactive it's been lately I still consider it the most important topic.

General Chat thread would be the runner up.

Mr.Dark

This hack was a lot more swift then any I've seen. I mean all of topics were gone in a couple of minuets. What a sham.

DDSS1303
10-16-2008, 07:20 PM
Man, when will these guys get a life and realize that this has happened so many times that it really doesn't effect us that much anymore?

What hack are we on, anyway? Number seven? I'm pretty sure we've been hacked at least five times since I've been here and I think it was hacked a couple of times before that...

I can't give names unfortunately, but all you need to know is that this forum was hacked about 7 times now because the hackers still strongly believe that they were being treated unfairly. Why they were exactly banned I don't really know, but you'd think that by now they'd get over it. I guess not.

Either way, this is a SEVERE problem and you, the forum management, need to find ways to prevent this happening again immediately!

Kleaneasy, you utter genius.
We've had another hack and you're refusing to put up a backup because people have been posting during the downtime? You may not be witty enough to admit failure, but yet again this is your fault for not responding quickly enough. Are you unaware of the effort that has been put into, for example, the Rayman 3 scores topic? It seems arrogant that you, although having all the necessary tools to do so, refuse to bring back those much-wanted posts, and moreover that you blame the community's posting on something you yourself couldn't manage.
I'm just here to inform Kleaneasy of what a windbag of an admin she's been once again. I'm wondering when we will (if ever) get a more diligent administrator for our Rayman forums.

The fact of the matter is that you have failed for the sixth or seventh time at a basic administrative function, though, to the detriment of everybody else.

Anything you say is not an excuse, bearing in mind the basic fact here:

You are an employee of a multimillion dollar IT-based company. The perpetrators are bored children.

I find it rather entertaining that the RZ forums only continue to get worse and worse. No good tracking systems. No good security. And the worse cover-up stories admins have to offer.

I didn't think things would get better since leaving, but I also didn't think it'd also get this much worse.

Ubisoft continues to point fingers at the Mods for the hacking rather than spending a few dollars to upgrade to a better forum service.

Not only that, but Ubisoft in general is stumbling about with trying to release or sponser proper games. From the horrid Rabbid series to the sexist Imagine series, they continue to struggle to get their money to use to make more horrible games.

Does anybody even buy anything from Ubisoft anymore?

Perhaps I should stick around for a while and watch to see if the forum continues to get even worse than this and watch for more excuses. May prove wasting my time on.

Merely to talk to everyone. That's one of the few reasons I really come here. That's what most of the topics were for anyway. Chat and games which can be easily started over. Isn't that what a forum is for in the first place? The only way the hackers can really win and destroy RZ is if everyone just says "What's the point? It'll be deleted anyway" and stops posting. WHat we should do is just shrug it off and keep posting.

Plus, the people on RZ today have done nothing to deserve this. It's not our faults Jugrot was unfairly banned from RZ, yet we still get all our posts deleted. We've done nothing.

Xenon if calling me arrogant and a windbag makes you feel better then great but you might want to be a little more informed on the circumstances before you start passing judgement on matters you know nothing of.

It is not physically possible for any one person to cover the forums 24/7 and for this reason there will be times they go un-moderated/ managed.

It was unfortunate timing that the hack occurred some 12 hours before I was on the forums and subsequently aware of the problem and this did hinder our ability to act on it.

Regarding backups I think we need to clear some things up...........

Any forum back up is forum wide, that means across all game forums and it is not possible to separate any specific forum back up. Because of this any move to bring a back up online has to go through the most senior of management and is way out of my control. I can provide information on the situation and circumstances but cannot make the decision or authorise the action to bring a back up online.

On this occasion any back up would have been approximately 24 hours old by the time it came online allowing the 12+ hours before becoming aware of the problem then time to notify those who need to authorise backups and them actually coming online etc. In the first 12 hours alone there had already been extensive work across other game forums and this ultimately had a huge impact on the decision to not back up.

I can see why people are angry but this isn't a situation we've created, its one we've inherited.

I've not seen anyone point fingers, I have seen moderators accounts hacked and used to delete forums which resulted in them being given advice on internet security and how to avoid a repeat. That's really not the same thing though.

Xenon if calling me arrogant and a windbag makes you feel better then great but you might want to be a little more informed on the circumstances before you start passing judgement on matters you know nothing of. Then why haven't you explained to us what exactly happened?

It is not physically possible for any one person to cover the forums 24/7 and for this reason there will be times they go un-moderated/ managed. Agreed, but it shouldn't have taken you 3 days to react. As administrator you should be around at least 4 times each day.

But what about all the posts here that were of significant value? (Admittedly only a few topics, but those had hundreds of posts) Are you just going to pass these aside?

And I have one question for you that sums up my argument: What will be done to prevent future hacks? Considering this is the sixth time the Rayman forum has been hacked, it is necessary to take needed measures. I would like to know what you will do to protect the forum against any further hacks from these idiots.

By the way, don't lock this topic like you did with the former one.

Here's a nice idea: remove deletion rights from the moderators and change them to a 'move to trash can forum' right, so you always have specific backups for any mod activity.

Ouch, that was a tricky one!

Weird forum rearrangement by the way, i.e. completely deleting every forum except general Rayman chat. Don't see that happening for any other Ubi forums...

Could we please have a separate forum for the Rabbid spinoffs though, please?

Also, where is general chat supposed to go..?

But I am just as anyone entitled to take a day off so there will be days when I cannot possibly cover the forums, I am also not the only forum manager but as I take a more hands on role you're all aware of.

Normally I do cover the forums even on days off I am normally online twice early morning and late evening for a quick check up to make sure the sky hasn't fallen. This weekend I was offline from Friday evening until Monday afternoon. I was online briefly around tea time (my time) on Friday which was when I became aware of the hack, I contacted my superiors with the information and planned to return a little later once any planned action was determined. In the meantime my internet went down and did not return until Monday afternoon. This was the only reason I did not act earlier, although this would not have impacted on any possible back up it would have meant I would have been more visible within the forums and able to discuss the problem and concerns around it.

Whether we like it or not there are times when decisions must be weighed up, the brutal truth is that the content posted within the other forums within that time period was considered too valuable to lose; also those communities had not been targeted but would suffer from a back up to a situation beyond their control

Ok Xenon first things first this isn't an argument nor should it be. I realise a lot of you don't like me but I am your forum manager and I am more than able to hold a polite discussion regardless of that dislike, I am sure you can do the same http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

So to the point........

I would like to say that someone's installing a miracle forum system that can't be hacked, truth is I don't know what will be done. I am not a coder, I don't know how they get in and I don't know what can be done to stop them. I do know that a lot of us are making a lot (and I mean a LOT) of noise about this problem and hopefully that noise will result in someone doing what needs to be done to finally address it. This causes as much work and pain for us each time it happens as it does you guys so we're as keen as the next to see it fixed.

To your first question why didn't I explain what's happened?
Because I lost an entire weekend offline, I've a lot to catch up on and I figured several days after the fact you had already figured it out. Add to this I am still not entirely sure what has happened, I know an account was accessed by means I do not know and used to create a mass deletion, and that is being investigated by my superiors beyond that I don't know. Wish I did I would have the swine's up in court so fast you wouldn't believe.

All of the smaller game forums have only one category
For now it will remain as is, I will create a general chat thread shortly and will be very lenient on general chat/ off topic threads so don't worry about that.

On the matter of reorganising the forums, contrary to rumour this did NOT involve deleting any posts, certainly not several hundred, which would have been difficult when there were not that many here as a result of the hack http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

All existing threads were simply moved, everything is still here http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Problem is, EVERYTHING is HERE.
There should be 4 sections: Rabbids, Rayman, Off-Topic, Fan Works. The way it is now, nobody will even WANT ( certainly not me ) to post their fan works here anymore. And all Rabbid lovers now post in Rayman-related topics easier than before. And that's a problem.

Bar if the forums activity increase I will change it back, remember it was me who gave you a separate Rabbid forum in the first place so I understand why it was needed. The problem has been for a while that the forums are too quiet and given the recent mass deletion separate categories only contributed to how quiet and unwelcoming the forums are

I assure you though I will change it back if/when the activity increases

Why is it when you go to a party everyone ends up in the kitchen?

A real life party and a forum are two COMPLETELY different things!

People merge into the kitchen because they're hungry!

People chat in a forum when they feel welcome to it, safe, and have something to say with other people about a specific topic.

Forums are about social interaction under the watchful eyes of the admins, WITHOUT the fear that their conversations will be obliterated.

Not about mooching off chips from a party host.

@ Luckster people don't go to parties to eat, forums and parties are both about social interaction and you would walk past a party with only a couple of people to go to the one up the road with a roomful.

Now I'm happy to discuss this properly with anyone who wants to but if all you're aiming to do is find holes to pick and argue about (as you have been doing) then perhaps we should leave it?

Yeh sure, as a general outline:

I manage/admin the official forums by this I mean I create, amend, and update forums as needed and manage the moderators within my forums, recruit & oversee etc

Review community opinion and feedback from both internal and external forums and send this back in regular reports
Address issues as they arise from game issues to forum issues etc

And to clear some confusion in posts I've seen from members here...

I do not have the power to install backups
I do not have the power to change the forum software
I do not have the power to rewrite the forums software or fix security holes.

Thats just a basic outline but feel free to ask questions no doubt I've missed a lot but its late and I'm tired http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

As I understand it that is split between both Ubisoft and Eve, Ubisoft holding the decisions on when to back up and Eve in the actual software functioning.
As to why isn't anything being done I honestly don't know, sadly I am too far down the ladder to be privy to what is and isn't happening in that regard, we don't know if it's because it can't be done or won't be, or something entirely different I just don't know.

You can have a thread linking to all fanfics by thread or you can link to each newly added chapter by the individual post (each post has its own link ID)

The forums will be hacked again and again and the only hope for them is new and complete Rayman game created by Ancel. Only then Ubisoft may at least try to give us better security. As for now - I'm waiting for BG&E 2.

The forums security has nothing to do with a new Rayman title, we've new games coming out all the time all on the same forum software

If everone stops posting here, then there will be no more hacks.

Therefore, that goal is nearly accomplished.
