Advertising your game usually does that - first week sales have nothing to do with which one was better.
I don't remember ever seeing any ads on TV for DA, but I've seen shows sponsored by Conviction.

Stay classy Ubi then again this could have been the last SC game and I would have been happy.

If 500K means for the whole world then this is not really that high when you look how fast SCCT sold. I thought that something like that could happen though at this point I don't wish them bad sales although it would say them that they cannot do a "half" game. It could happen that they won't develop a next Splinter Cell. Hardcore Gamers will continue to buy when the core values are there in the franchise. "Casual" Gamers are possible buyers but you cannot expect that they will buy every game and you cannot count on them.

Preorder numbers were pretty high and because they're summed in equation, this is considerably weak.
Good thing for Ubi is that big number of old fans of series are not buying Conviction right now and they're waiting for price drop.

Didn't you read the article? Conviction sold more in the first week than Double Agent, meaning consumers liked Conviction more than Double Agent, at least they liked it enough to spend $60 on it.

Does the fact my copy was fully paid for in 2007 count as a first week sale or a prehistoric one?

LOL. One of my friends did the same thing back in 07.
As for your question, what I'm guessing is that preorders like yours don't necessarily translate into first week sales numbers. Mainly because the money is held at the store, not given to Ubisoft. When I worked at Gamestop sales numbers were only tracked once the game was released. So your preorder, when you actually picked up the game at the store, was converted into a new sale, as much as the guy behind you and his purchase of the same game translated into a first week sale, at least on the regional sales reports.
I dunno how it works for larger retailers like Wal Mart. I think they know they'll burn through their copies no matter how many they buy so they probably don't report the number of actual sales they get from store to store, but rather from how many the store orders period. After all, if Ubisoft sends a Wal Mart 500 copies they don't care if the store only sells 450 of them, as long as they don't send them back.

Anything could have beaten Double Agent's first week sales. Double Agent was HORRIBLE. On all sides, the 360, and PC especially. The Xbox and PS2 versions we're the only "good" versions of that game.
Not to mention, DA came out early in the 360's/PS3's cycle. Not many could purchase it.
If it had beat Chaos Theory, it'd be impressive. In the day and age where there are 40 millions 360's, and nearly everything sells 1 millions, 500K in week one is low.

I've been trying to track them down, but finding NPD sales data from 2005 is definitely difficult. NPD's website only goes back to 06.
[EDIT]:
From what I've been able to piece together, the lowest of the top ten game title sales in 2005 was 800K units (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6142407.html). So logic dictates that Chaos theory did not breach 800K units in that year though it was launched in March. This means that 9 months of sales did not reach 800K so therefore Conviction's first week MAY HAVE even eclipsed Chaos Theory's first quarter or two of sales.
It could also mean that maybe the total numbers from GC/Xbox/PS2 and PC are not being tracked as a whole but rather by an individual system basis.
Still, at least it's something.

If it sold 2.5 million in its first month, that means it sold an average of 625,000 units in a month on each of it's platforms (PC/Xbox/PS2/GC) which also means it's impossible for any of the four platforms to not appear in the list I just provided nine months after launch (and Lord knows it's not a flat equal number across all platforms since some are more popular than others).

This is the only bit of NPD sales data I can find from 2005 console sales. It only lists the top ten, but <200K of sales on Xbox alone means that Conviction definitely overtook Chaos Theory's first month of sales in it's first week.
[EDIT]: @Aj6627, this also supports my point that 2.5 million in the first month is an impossibility since the game didn't even make it onto the top 10 sales for the entire year.

Furthermore, units sold says nothing about quality. Conviction could have beaten MW2 but it wouldn't mean the game isn't a piece of trash compared to CT.

This is not the number to watch. The NPD numbers that debut in May will have final word on April's sales, but the one that really matters is the June NPD report. The May report will state April's sales and I expect it'll be over a million copies sold. The June report will detail May's sales and if there's going to be a drop off it'll begin in May. May is when the hype wears off and when games like Read Dead Redemption and Lost Planet 2 debut and start competing with Conviction for business. Remember, Conviction probably needs to move 3-4 million copies considering how long it took to make.
Another metric to keep your eye on is the trade in value for Conviction as offered by Gamestop or other game exchange services.
Still, Conviction PC hasen't been released yet.

Impossible to track. Nobody knows those statistics. Best gauge of that is the trade in value stores are offering.

PC sales are going to be a non factor. PC version will be lucky to move a few hundred thousand copies.

Actually over 500K copies in the first week is really good, seeing how Conviction is only on Xbox. You have to remember it still hasn't been released in Japan, or PC at all. Mass Effect 2 has been out since January and its only sold 1.68 million in 4 months, so for Conviction to sell 1/3 of that in a week and not even fully released yet is pretty impressive. Also SCCT only sold a little over 2 million since it was released 5 years ago and that was cross platform. If Conviction was on PS3 as well I bet anything the sales would almost double, I would say at the end of the year SCC is looking at a little over 2 million but nothing higher unless for some reason it does get released on PS3.

Well that's not what the figures in this thread are saying
If Conviction was on PS3 as well I bet anything the sales would almost double,
I doubt it it. Splinter Cell sales on PS have always paled in comparison to Xbox sales. There certainly would be an increase, but not a doubling. Still, that's not the point here.

Thereabouts I'd say. Between 2-3 mil seems reasonable. Doubt it'll crack 4 though. I would be surprised if it did.

I'm using number from VGChartz which is also where the "Conviction selling 500K in a week" came from. In being 2005, selling over 2 mill is like epic for back then, so I doubt it sold any higher.
If it did come to PS3 I think it would push the sales to 3.5 mill but I highly doubt Conviction will sell close to 4 mill. Like you said, if it does I'd be surprised, I would actually be really surprised if it sold that much.

VGChartz is undependable. It doesn't even count PC sales and nowhere complies the 19 million total sales for the series.
And selling over 2 mil was par for the course for Splinter Cell back then.

Conviction was not going to set sales records. The game was beset with too many delays and development problems, and I noticed that that last delay prior to the feb 23 release really killed alot of excitement and goodwill generated from the 2009 E3. Remember, it was supposed to get released in november, then feb, THEN april...after already being delayed 2 yrs.
Many new titles have emerged since then to take the big seller crown, and quite honestly splinter cell has not been a AAA title since prior to Double Agent. It's a AA at best. Core fans are divided and the casual gamers have been steadily dropping off since the first one.
500k in a week is pretty good considering the development hell this game has been in.

Hardcore gamers like splinter cell

Stay classy Ubi then again this could have been the last SC game and I would have been happy.
thats not really low considering the game was only released on a single platform. to sell half a million in one week is not bad at all...

Comparing this to CoD: MW2 is laughable - it was already an incredibly popular series and MW was played an incredibly amount. It's natural that MW2 would've gotten so many sales. (I'm not stating support - I'm just saying that the casual gamer is fairly predictable)
Halo is more correct though; no one knew much about it before release.
