View Full Version : Third Wheel

I picked up a copy of OXM today before it got shipped out. They had a brief two paragraphs regarding Splinter Cell 4 online:

Third Wheel
"The online portion of the game brings back the almost flawless portion of the versus mode, though now the teams can have up to three members. New moves for the spies and gadgets for the mercs (including a remote copter of sorts) will be included, as well as a fresh team-ranking system; perform well enough, and you can eventually reach an Instructor ranking, allowing you to take two novice players under your wing, thereby eliminating the severe imbalance caused by the mode's steep learning curve. A tweaked version of the co-op mode rounds out the online aspect of Double Agent.

Double Agent will also be available on the Xbox 1, though there are some key differences to the game, including varying level layouts, a few missing missions, a new spy-versus-spy multiplayer mode that will replace the spies-vs-mercs game, and a different co-op mode."

Despite being an entirely new experience, this is still Splinter Cell at heart, much like GRAW is still Ghost Recon. And that's what we love about Tom Clancy. He may not show up on time for the party, but he will bring the guests that everyone wants to meet and talk to. And his next-gen beauties are once again set to be the belles of the Xbox 360 ball."

Read. Discuss.

I love how the article starts out mentioning the "almost flawless" online portion of the game. I conclude from that statement that Ubisoft is made of morphine. I suppose one thing is encouraging. It says that teams can now have "up to three members". I'm guessing that means we can play with two if we want to. However, if the maps are being designed for six players, well, that would suck.

I do inherit a small measure of satisfaction knowing that all the Xbox noobs won't even get SvM. Instead they get to play exclusive Spy vs. Spy. Oh goodie.

What's stopping anyone from doing that anyways?

What does their "Instructor Mode" offer new? If it's just bonus points to my pupils for ranking then "Meh". I definatly wouldn't mind obtaining the Instructor rank though as it's quite fitting to me. Hmm...http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

This annoys me.

It's utterly useless to have a person report on a game who is obviously not even a member of the SC community. If he is, chances are he's the "new generation" of SC player who wants to convert the game into another run of the mill FPS.

Most vets I've come across are VEHEMENTLY against this. When you just hear the positive about a game, you know their either paid to keep their mouths shut about the bad, or they aren't looking hard enough.

In this case and point, I'd assume the reporter never once played SvM, and is just reporting on what Ubi's PR dept. is telling them.

Can we get an official 'response' on SvM 'working flawlessly'?

It would probably be something along the lines of "There are no problems. The problems that do not exist will be fixed soon, by which we mean the week after you stop asking for support. Thanks for your money. Buy the sequel. - Ubi"

OK now, why would I want to have 2 *****s, who have NO idea what they are doing, don't even WANT to learn AND keep running around the level, getting ME killed for it?

Why don't the lazy bastards just make a FREAKING COMPETENT tutorial, instead of throwing the noobs in our hands?
Oooh weee, look I'm an instructor and 4% of the newbies will actually listen to what I say!
Oooh weee, look! 99% of the people, playing rank, are actually rank *****s and don't care about anything but their points and level, and the only thing they will be able to teach newbies is how to abuse glitches and how to scream "LAG BS!" every time they die! Goodie!

You know what would be better? A little checkbox when you sign in that says "Instructor Mode" meaning Newbies can Press the "Find an Instructor" and send him some private messages in-game to ask for some help and training. How's that sound?

But you'll play it anyways.

Either way, it is a new game, and it will be on a new engine which hopefully translates to a better running, less glitchy game. Even if they can just pull that off, I'll be happy.

No i won't. If I'm not happy with the beta, i'm not going to buy it. I don't buy Splinter Cell for the SP, I buy it for the MP. This holds true with MANY people.

That is... if there WILL be a beta.

Given the track record, it would be reasonable to assume that Ubi won't release a demo, seeing as they love taking every opportunity to shun input and feedback. Even during the chaos theory beta, I heard, they didn't listen to valuable community input.

I bought SC1
I bought SC:PTx2 (Got addicted to the MP)
I bought SC:CT (Stayed addicted to the MP)

Just because we bought the first SC doesnt mean squat. We played the first SC and probably completed it in a week and i know i never played it again. We now play SC for the MP and that's the only part of the game that holds our attention for anything more than a week. How does that make him a new player?

****, xbox better have SvM or a lot of us will be pissed. Even though I have a 360, I'm not sure if my partner(s) will be getting it, especially by March and surely the xbox playing crowd will be greater than the 360 - and SC's playing crowd is small enough as it is.

**** if this is true.....

that would be a nice gameplay experience

IMO pc should have the best possible SvU with the price of ditcing other gamemodes, or make special edition with only SvU. (And the best SvU ever!)

Don't get me wrong here, I like SP and coop very much but if I could have more flawless and less buggy SvU with even better maps and more gadgets, I have to say that I'm willing to ditch other gamemodes for that.

Yeah, I would REALLY value a review if one of the vets on THIS FORUM were given the game before release and then reported on it. It just seems to be more hype based on nothing more than an inexperienced gamer's review.

lol, if UBI had announced a beta, it would have crashed on startup and been released ten weeks AFTER the game to only certain consoles...
let's wait for more info. As it is, I'm not going to buy this game...but we don't know anything about this game yet! All we have are rumors and one-sided articles...I want in-game footage. Until then, UBI can just live without my 50(60?) dollars.
