I have the DL'ed version from UBI with the latest patch. I've tried installing mods, but I never seem to do it correctly. Could I install GE mod over the current install? Or what is the process of installing it.

Thanks.

You don' HAVE TO do it like this, but this is the most fool proof for installing GW.

1. Uninstall SH3.
2. Delete all directories and entries related to SH3.
3. Reboot.
4. Install SH3.
5. Install patch 1.4b.
6. Install GW by clicking on the .exe file of that mod.
7. Launch SH3.

Have you installed SH3 Commander ? IMO that is a must have program, first on on this page:
http://www.subsim.com/subsim_files/patches2005.html

If you want to install this then the procedure is slightly different:

1. Uninstall SH3.
2. Delete all directories and entries related to SH3.
3. Reboot.
4. Install SH3.
5. Install patch 1.4b.
6. Install GW by clicking on the .exe file of that mod.
7. Install SH3 COmmander by clicking the .exe.
8. Launch SH3 or Sh3 COmmander.

That is the way I do it - and it's not failed me yet!

Here's what I did for my new install. Doing it this way ensures that when GW is upgraded, you can simply disable it and change the files and all will be well.

1. Uninstall SH3.
2. Delete all directories and entries related to SH3. Rename My Documents\SH3 to SH3_Backup.
3. Reboot.
4. Install SH3.
5. Run SH3 and quit.
6. Install patch 1.4b.
7. Run SH3 and quit.
8. Install JSGME (http://www.users.on.net/%7Ejscones/software/products/jsgme.zip).
9. Run JSGME to make a snapshot of the orginal files, see the read me.
10. Install GW by clicking on the .exe file of that mod. Change the install path to add "\MODS\Grey Wolves v1.1a" at the end of it. This will install the mod into the JSGME folders.
11. Run JSGME and enable Grey Wolves. This will take a while.
12. Launch SH3 and quit.
13. Copy back your career files from SH3_Backup to SH3 in My Docs and test that they work.
14. Install SH3 Commander.
15. Ensure that SH3 Commander works with your saved Career files.
16. Enjoy!

JSGME is a program which allows for "easy" removal of mods. I've never used it but I heard its a pain at first. Also, I never had to reinstall SH3 and I've been playing with it for a long time. With all the multiplay its bound to get corrupted, but hasnt yet for me.

This is what I did:
1. Goto windows directory (C:/Programfiles..etc..etc)
2. Find UBI Soft folder, copy SH3 folder and paste with new name (example: Silent Hunter 3 Original)
3. Downloaded all (5?) parts of GW mod.
4. Placed them all in a seperate folder called "GW Mod" on desktop
5. Once downloaded, ran the .exe file
6. Install complete, mod automatically installs to original folder ("Silent Hunter 3") and new copied folder ("Silent Hunter 3 Original") stays untouched.
7. Create new short cut on desktop for new copied folder .exe ("Silent Hunter 3 Original.exe")
8. Installation complete, no JSGME and I now have two versions of the game completely seperate of eachother - one modded, one unmodded.

I have found that you can do this as many times as you like as long as you have the hard drive space and can remember which SH3.exe is for which mod/version. One member of our Flotilla currently has 5 versions of SH3 on his PC, they all work fine.

Good luck!

Okay, thanks. Just one more thing. Where can I find the GW MOd?

Goto http://www.users.on.net/~jscones/TGW/ (http://www.users.on.net/%7Ejscones/TGW/)
Scroll down the page until you see where to download. Subsim link is always down so use the europe mirror. Download all 5 parts and remember to place them into their own folder.

Firstly, IMHO useing the JSGME is the only way to go when installing mods. It is simple to install, and use if you read the enclosed documentation. The fact that it backs up all original files, and reinstalls them after a mod is disabled, makes it a no-brainer in my book.

The other thing that I would like to point out, is a slight, but important oversight in the installing procedures listed above. No one mentioned that after the complete removal of SHIII, and befor it is reinstalled, you should Defrag your hardrive! I feel this is an important step to starting fresh. I always follow this routine, and have never, ever had a problem with any reinstalls.

Will JSGME install multiple copies of SH3 on your PC automatically, depending on what mods you install?

No, but you can have a seperate install of JSGME in each install you have.

Personally I have one install with GW/BR's ships and some other random mod with JSGME and one install with NYGM and JSGME.

I just wish there was a way to seperate the campaign files for each since it remembers the campaign name and realism settings between the two installs, and i prefer to have them different.

How do you keep the campaigns/careers separated? Does GW use a different folder to My Documents\SH3?

That's a good question, since both installs use the same careers. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

I'm always afraid that SH3 Commander will change something for one career that affects the others. Very annoying. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I've found a solution. I did a bit of poking around with a hex editor and patched FileManager.dll so that it saved to My Documents\TWG instead of My Documents\SH3. Et voila! Two careers!

Of course, you would need two parallel installations of SH3, one stock and one with TWG, so that you have two different copies of FileManager.dll, but there's now no reason in principle why you shouldn't have many parallel installations (TGW, NYGM, etc), each with their own career. That means you would not use JSGME for the super-mods, although you could still use it for the smaller mods within each of the installations as you pleased.

There's only one strict requirement: the folder name must be exactly 3 characters, so it can replace the string "SH3".

I'm going to be a bit busy this weekend, but if I can find time I'll try to write a utility to automate the process.
