View Full Version : realistic flood and sink time?

I noticed that in SH4 ships would almost always if not always sink much too fast for their size. 1 or 2 torp hits on a large passenger liner would often send it to the bottom in about 1 minute.

With the new compartmental flooding dynamics will we see a more realistic flood time?

The game could still report a ship as being destroyed right away even though it might take 15 minutes for it to sink. I think the last ship sunk by torps was hit twice and it took 40 minutes to sink.

Im not saying it should take 40 minutes for them sink but Im hoping it will be a bit more accurate than watching a huge passenger liner slip away in 45 seconds after 1 hit.

here I found a great video about what im talking about

torp attack (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dk_0GPW2Vos)

It took 10 min an 19 sec for this ship to sink. I would really love to see something close to this implemented in sh5 http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

good topic

how about the damage to the sub ?
can whe internaly see fires en floods and have a good change to repair it

i can remenber one game in the old silenthunter 1
the repairs took ages but i gave me a good fighting change to get back.
i jettison debrie and rested on the bottom the destroyers found me but didn,t drop a thing i lost because my air ran out but the repair was a min short man i nearly made it back to te surface
it was intense
hope to see this aswell in sh5

capthavoc, I did that in both Silent Hunter III and Silent Hunter IV. I have successfully set my sub on the bottom and did my repairs as destoryers ran all around depthcharging all over the place.

I how ever am for a realistic sinking time how ever. I know I have encounter some passenger liners in Silent Hunter IV that sank instantly and others that took a good 7 mins before sinking.

Another thing I would like to see is if the waves make it over the deck it should mean the ship is destroyed and it will sink. God knows how many ships I have disabled in the Pacific where their bow is almost below the ocean and waves washing up over the bow and over the top of the cargo hatches but the ship never sinks. Makes you want to go crazy when that happens. Especially if youre out of torpedos and a destoryer is just sitting in the area waiting for you to surface to finish off the target.

Yeah I do remember some ships that did take maybe 7 min to sink but it was rare enough that I forgot until you mentioned it.

most ships sink in under a minute once they have been hit and I watched multiple passenger liners sink in about 45 sec with one dead center hit. I'm pretty sure thats way too fast.

I bet if a torp blew a passenger liner in half I bet it would still take a minimum of 2 minutes for both halves to sink probably closer to 4 or 5

The Lusitania took 18 mins to sink after being torpedoed twice. The HMHS Britannic sank in 58 mins after hitting a mine in WWI as well. A large passenger carrier shouldnt sink in seconds. I know I attacked a old passenger carrier with two destoryer escorts. I shot at the furthest destoryer first, then the passenger ship, then the first destoryer. Missed the lead but I nailed a hit on the passengership and the aft destoryer. In the time it took me to bring the periscope from the aft destoryer to the lead the passengership was already gone. I wouldnt mind if some ships sank quickly at an insane rate but it shouldnt be common. But with SHV from what ive been reading sounds like you can break the back of a ship or blow the bow off a ship and only part of it sink. That sounds really nice and I like the thought of ships being able to break up into multiple pieces.

remember watching Hitlers Stealth Uboat ..

At 11.40 hours on 21 August 1944, U-480 fired a Gnat at an unknown convoy and thought that she had sunk a frigate. In fact, the corvette HMCS Alberni (A/Lt.Cdr. Ian Hunter Bell, RCNVR) was hit and sunk in in the English Channel

In the program the survivors said from hearing the trop exploding and the ship going under was 30 seconds.

Thing is though a Corvette isnt that big of a "warship". She is bigger than a PT boat, but how ever not more than 125 Ft longer.

The PT Boats were roughly 80 Ft in length, the flower Corvette how ever was just 205 ft in length. So to have a Flower Corvette sink in 30 seconds isnt that un beliveable. But to have a 50,000 ton passengership at 700 ft in length and almost 110 ft tall to sink in 30 seconds is kinda fast. Example would be the 60,000 ton HMHS Britannic in WWI. She was 900 ft long and roughly 110 ft tall. One mine explosion ripped a hole in her side. She sank in 58 mins.

For instance, I engaged a destoryer that was coming up astern to attack me in the Pacific. I put a single torpedo into the engine room just aft of the funnel. She was dead in the water and took close to 10 mins before she sank.

In the end I do agree, we need realistic sink time and flooding but we also need "destoryed" markers before the ship sinks. Not everyone will be able to stay around the area for the time it takes a ship to sink. Especially if youre being chased by escorts.
