Ok, whenever I sink a ship and a big cloud of smoke appears. If I go near it with freeview the fps drops to about 10fps. Is this to do with the Nvidia problem I have Athlon64 3500, 1024 ram and a GF6800

I have a system that is comparable to yours and I have slowdown issues as well when there is lots of smoke onscreen. According to the devs, I believe the problem is that only the small paticles are rendered by the video card so apparently all other particle effects are handled by the cpu.

I have a :

Thunderbird 1.4
512meg ram
9600xt
Epox 8KHA motherboard.

And no slowdown. (Though im not one of those people who gets beta drivers, i stick with the drivers i get untill games have problems, which i still have never had.)

My advice is never download new drivers till you need them!!!

My only ingame problem is 1024 speed is only 1 second faster per game hour then 512 speed. So my comp obviously has problems computing all the ship movements at full speed.

I think thats because you have an ATI board. I believe there is a nvidia problem when it comes particles and this game.

No its not just a nvidia thing. 9800XT classic here and I get some slowdown from big explosions to consist of fire and smoke etc. Its usualy when i look at the explosion with binocs or uzo at the zoomed in look, then u get mouse slowdown etc, its not overly a problem or that bad but it is there, soon as u move the zoom out back to normal look distance its fluid as anything again.

There are lots of particle settings in the config files i seen but not tried any adjustments yet. Might be worth trying :P If anyone does make a decent subject header for it and make a new thread on what works etc and what doenst.

Cheers.
