New career, TMO 1.7 plus RSRD...USS Gunnel, first patrol of new career.Took out a four ship convoy, with four escorts...two nights later in Dunkers Derp area...Japan-Saipan-Truk shipping lane, radar has contacts....turns out to be a Task Force with a Yamato BB, an Agano light cruiser and three DD's.RWR picked up radar signals so dove 3000 yards off projected track for night scope attack.

12 torpedos left, eight after four forward.Set up for stern shot with Mark 18's, fired, hit Yamato, which slowed and then went dead in water while escorts dropped charges.Luckily seas were rough so was safe at 300 feet.

NOt sure if they would really do this but the DD's gave up and left the cripple BB, went on with Agano cruiser.so popped back up, aft tubes now reloaded with Mark 23 steam torps....fired them all, put holes in but no explosions or sign of sinking.Swung around for last four torps in bow tubes....two Mark 23's and two Mark 18's....fired all four, one aimed right under smaller turret just in front of the bridge....mustve hit the magazines...started blowing up real nice.

So 12 torpedos to sink that tub.

93, 034 tons on first patrol at high realism.Rough seas are nice, IJN sonar sucks in rough seas, even in TMO.

You were lucky to stop it in the water with a few hit. I ran into it last night and hit it with 6 aim front to aft...barely slowed down, 3 hits, rest duds.

After 3 end arounds it was barely moving. I had 6 torps left. Lined up perfect shot, watched 5 duds or prematures, one hit..I waited, but it would never sink....talk about mad.

During the Battle of Leyte Gulf both the Yamato and Musashi took part in the battle. Don't remember exactly which part it was but the Musashi took 17 aerial torpedoes and I don't remember how many bomb hits before she finally sank. She was built to take alot of punishment.

MWOLFE, I aimed them to hit under the turrets and engines, but was surprised four Mark 18's caused her to go dead in the water but they were set at 25 and 30 feet, suppose they hit just right.Figured I would have to do an end around and set up to attack again but got lucky.

I was most surprised the DD's left a capital ship behind like that, never seen them do that in SH 4.I once put a Hiryu carrier dead in water and 3 DD's stayed behind and didnt go away, after two days game time.I ended up firing from 8000 yards...DD's screened and took my last four torpedos, so i had to give up, i was not happy.

Anyway as Tambor pointed out with that example, they were tough well built ships.Game portrays this well.

If you can hit it at the main turret it will do some damage. I've sunk it a hundred times harbor raping, but only twice that I can recall underway. It's hard to sink it early war when all your torps fail. Twice now with TMO I've had it dead in the water, but no torps to finish it off. One time I had 12 torps left and I think all but 2 were duds, talk about mad.

Late war I always get a shot at in in the San. Bern Straits....
