Try to keep personal feelings out of the forums.

BACK ON TOPIC = Starforce

Starforce did NOT screw up your computer. If it did and you can show the makers of Starforce how it happened you could win a yet to be claimed $5,000.

"Prove it!" and receive $5000 from StarForce! (http://www.star-force.com/protection.phtml?c=261&id=707)

StarForce is announcing world wide contest among users of StarForce protected applications!!!

There have been a lot of rumors in the Internet concerning DVD/CD writers malfunction after installation and star-up of StarForce protected applications. Some have even mentioned that should such “malfunctioning” drive be placed in any other PC without StarForce protection installed it will fail to work as well.

In the past year our staff and many of our clients tried restlessly to reproduce the matter based on these rumors. Using our hardware collection we assembled systems alike, but such problems never took place.
Therefore, we have no proven facts of such issues and we have found out that all of these rumors are false.

We have serious reasons to believe that such problems are pure fiction.
However, if such problem does exist, it should be repeatable. Therefore, just to make sure, StarForce decided to have a worldwide contest among users of StarForce protected applications.

Anyone who can reproduce and demonstrate the mentioned above problem with CD/DVD drive in our office will receive $5000.00 US.

You should arrive in our office with your PC or use any of our PCs and reproduce the problem.

Here are the terms of the contest:

All the drives in the system should be properly functioning prior to the installation of a StarForce protected product.

After the installation and start-up of StarForce protected product the problem with (CD/DVD read-write malfunction) must exist and be reproduced in any other configuration.
If you can be the first to reproduce this situation in our office, we will be happy to award you with $5000.00 US, cover your trip to Moscow and pay 2 days’ lodging.

Please submit your applications before January 31 2006.

Not really.

He/she has to go to their offices in Moscow to prove it. What if he/she is a minor?

(don't tell 'the parent's permission' because I highly doubt they would allow their son/daughter to go by themselves halfway around the world. Remember, Starforce says they'll only cover your expenses.)

If that were the case, then they are stuck with the problem, even if they are correct.

i buy a game to enjoy it..no to get headaches..next time i'd rather burn my money than to give it to ubisoft

'Couple' of questions:
- You tried using another DVD-drive?
- And you installed the StarForce patch which increases compatibility with older DVD-drives?
- You are really sure that you HAVE a DVD-drive?
- You know the you've been ripped off with CT that costs 30 euros now instead of 45 (make the change to dollars yourself please)?
- You know you still can play Versus by starting the .exe manually?
- You know another (probably compatible and better for the future) DVD-drive shouldnt cost more than 30 bucks?
- You know us Europeans already get Dual-Layer DVD-burners with each new quality- and mid-budget PC standard?

There isn't much that you can do... stores dont give you your money back, so you can buy another DVD-drive, or curse, or give it away as a present to someone else.

Then why don't you crack YOUR game?
Seeing as you have the disc, it isn't illegal, and you still get to play the game.

If your problem is with Starforce, go and complain to them about it, cuz it seems around here, no-one cares, and you're only fighting a losing battle. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

I feel that if someone has a problem with starforce, they should be able to provide Ubi (or the MFG) with a sales receipt and send in the game to get fully reimbursed (product and shipping)

The SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS list what you need to have in order to run the game. You make your purchase based on that information. Nowhere do they mention starforce capable DVD/CD ROM units. They merely say 8x DVD or something along those lines.

So if you meet the requirements and the game doesn't work, I can't see why that wouldn't be grounds for false advertisement.

System Requirements:
CD ROM: DVD- ROM 4x or better
Notice: The game contains technology intended to prevent copying that may conflict with some CD- RW, DVD-RW, and virtual drives.

Copied from the back of the package.

You yourself said what the grounds are for false advertisement. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

-They don't CLEARLY state anything about DVD burners being forbidden that aren't on their list.

-The fact that most DVD burners are in fact capable of 8x read-back speeds.

-The fact that there are versions of Windows XP that are disallowed (such as 64-bit) even though the requirements only say you have to have XP.

And the whole "Prove it" thing is a COP OUT!

If there weren't a problem with Starforce functioning properly on a significant number of setups, there wouldn't be so much clamor about it. But lets face it, gamers tend to be the ones most LIKELY to use custom-built rigs and not name brand PCs. So when Starforce starts blacklisting products, you start blacklisting users who have high end machines that might use such equipment.

There's got to be a better way to copy protect without pi$$ing off your customers with things like Starforce that make other games and applications stop working. I've had to reinstall Nero because of Starforce already. No, I can't PROVE that it was Starforce's fault, I'm not a programmer or debugger. I just know it was working an hour before I installed SCCT, and now it isn't. That's proof enough for me.

The only thing that bothers me about Star-Force is that their EULA is nowhere to be seen. They do have one, though.
