View Full Version : TRICK: Stop accidentally firing torps by pushing enter instead of time compression

Whenever i uses to go out on missions i uses to accidentally push enter and launch a torpedo instead of pushing the + sign for time control, but now whenever i push enter it doesn't fire the torp accidentally, how you ask did i pull this off? well its pretty easy, select the rear bow tube, reset the TDC and point the periscope at 0 degrees, the angle will be so great that when you try and fire it will give you the message "cannot set gyroscope angle" since you are trying to make a 180 degree shot. This should work reversly for say selecting the front tube and pointing the periscope 180 degrees behind. So there now you can go about on other screens and skipping time without the fear of accidentally firing off a torpedo.

Or

Go into the ../SilentHunterIII/Data/Cfg/Commands_en.cfg and Commands_de.cfg files and change the hotkey assignment, (the *de* file is for German and the *en* file is for English commands). Modify the file of the corresponding commands you use (German or English), or change both to be sure. Use a text editor to modigy the files. Search for the line "[Cmd313]" without the quotations. Change the line under [Cmd313] that reads:

"Key0=0x0D,,"Enter"

to

"Key0=0x65,,"Npad 5"

This will change the assigned keyboard hotkey for torpedo firing from Enter to Keypad 5, or as Ubisoft called it Npad 5.

I personally found the torpedo firing hotkey as assigned for "Enter" to be too close to the Interface hotkey (del key), and kept hitting the Enter button by mistake. So, I used the above to mod the files and it works fine for me, no problems. Now, my torpedo firing keyboard assigned key is Npad 5, and out of the way. Particularly since I don't use the camera, the surrounding buttons are all dead so no chance of a mistaken torp fired while groping the keyboard.

I also found this nice lil raw key code utility in the following thread under ACSoft's post:

What about a way to disable the "enter" key all together? I never use the key, I always click the "Fire" button on SH3's GUI. Is it possible to delete part of the string for the fire button in the CFG file?

Sorry mate, I only tried to change it to something else. You'll have to leave that one in the suggestion box or give it a try yourself. But I'd be careful when fooling around editing. Always save a backup of the file.

Yeah, just get rid of the 0x0D and Enter is what I did, left the rest there in case I want to put in another key.

Bulwark,

I used a flat-head screwdriver, and a soft head mallet to stop my enter key from working. Seems to have done the job so far http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

Yeah well, I do still like my enter button! I just don't like it when playing SH3! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Also thanks for that other advice guys. I just haven't been very experimental with the CFG files because so far the game is working fine, and I don't want to tempt fate by corrupting something! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I felt the same Bulwark and had resisted the temptation to mod the file. But alas after wasting my third torp while trying to push the "del" key and hitting the Npad-Enter button by mistake, I decide to try it. Saved the original file ofcourse. I've run a campaign with this and there seems to be no ill effects at all. I would add however, the file is prefaced with some Ubi narratives which obviously indicate nuiances for each of the entries in the text lines. So, prudence is the watchword.

Not assigning a key to firing a torpedo seems to be working excellent.

Nice tweak, guys! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Good tip Bweiss, I hope other members find this useful. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

If any of you come up with any ideas or fixes for annoying criteria within the game that may help people to get better or more from the game that isnt a cheat to get better scores, then please post em up !

If you have ways of cheating to get better scores in MP or indeed even SP then please keep em to yourself and dont post em..or I'll delete em ! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

This is my entry:

[Cmd313]
Name=Fire_torpedo
Ctxt=1
Key0=0x0D,c,"CTRL+Enter"

You can then reassign your "Enter" key to be "Pause" and have a nice arrangement of time-shift + stop on the right numpad.

Another good 'work around' from Bass29 !

At first i wanted to say, that i simply work around the problem by making sure that i press the right keys. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

But now that i think about it: having a pause key would be a nice addition!

Backspace has always been the pause key.

I want to make this Watch Officer command hotkeyed to my 'Enter' key.

This is what I did but it didn't work:

[Cmd432]
Name=Man_the_deck_and_flak_guns
Ctxt=1
MnID=0x3F2D0004
Key0=0x0D,,"Enter" <----I added this line

(I already changed the original Fire Torpedo command from 'Enter' to 'CTRL+Enter'.)

(Edit): I also tried this:

[Cmd432]
Name=Man_the_deck_and_flak_guns
Ctxt=1
MnID=0x3F2D0004
Key0=0x0D,c,"Enter" <----I added this line

Any ideas?

I know. I mean it would be nice to have the pause key next to the keys for time compression. It would be mimicking the layout of the corresponding buttons in the game interface.

But if you edit the Num-Block "Enter" does it still recognize the main "Enter"-key (aka "Return") as the firing key? Does it distinguish between those two, like every good program should?
