I was curious -- the last thing that I read at the forums about PBEM was "could do -- depends upon the savegame file size".

Has it been confirmed or denied yet whether PBEM will be part of the full release next month?

No problem guys.

Just out of curiosity, why would you want to play by e-mail? If you've got e-mail, you've obviously got an internet connection. It's a turn-based game, so play only a couple of turns in an MP game and save it when you and your opponent runs out of time. Then start it up again when you've got time to play again.

Oh, wait...I think I just got it. Your opponent isn't on-line at the same time you are. Is that it? If so, it might still be possible. You'd just have to e-mail your savegames back and forth after each day in the game. A bit tedious...but it might be possible. I'd have to mess around with the full version of the game a bit before I can say one way or the other yet. It's definitely not a designed option for playing, but you might be able to manage it by doing it manually.

Should definitly be able to do that by hotseat anyway.

You can kind of do it that way for casual gaming -- just sending savegames back and forth. But then you need a hotseat mode.

But even then for serious competition it is not enough. The PBEM mode allows for tracking and anti-cheat measures (like replaying the same turn over and over, or editing the savegame).

A good example of an active and popular PBEM community can be found at heavengame's Age of Wonders forums. Though the game is older now, it still has quite a PBEM following -- competitions and ladders abound http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Well ....

some people may have problems with conecting with each other so PBEM would a nice feature ..
As long as I know HoMMV has strange way to conect through internet : ports 4000 and several others (this was in beta)...
Guess what some ISP ban all ports accept the common 80 443 8080 and the mail ones ... The same is on many universities and academics ... This is to reduce virusues , and peer to peer software ...

I do not hope that nival made a great option to conect with players that allows you to choose a conection port and works for passive IP ... If they did then PBEM is not needed.

Furthermore I'm 99% certain the homm5 will conect through directplay ... Freaking MS technology ... and guess what ? That means that Mac version players will not conect with windows players .... The same goes for possible Linux port of the game .
Here is where PBEM once again would be usefull ...

And saving game and sending it sucks .... Just how will you fight the human vs human battle ???
This is were PBEM option should take part ...
