Hadn't played FB for a while, and didn't have the latest Nvidia and FB drivers. Decided to do a clean install of FB (first 1.0, then patch right to 1.21), and update my drivers to 45.23 (from 44.03). Thought I'd benchmark, using the BlackDeath track, as I went, and share the results with the community. Its not the absolute fps values that are interesting, but the variation in them when attempting various optimizations.
The first line is the absolute average frames per second before I did the re-installs/upgrades. The lines below are approximate deltas to the reference fps.
So for example, turning off AA gains average 2fps, but using DirectX drops fps by 4.
My personal surprise was that the latest FB patch and Nvidia drivers did not increase graphics performance, and arguably slightly decreased it. I'd been reading various postings on these baords that had been positive on both counts.
I tried the Perfect setting for fun, and the fps was too slow. Also there were some strange distance shimmering artefacts that were very noticeable and distracting.
Average fps Comment
27 Reference IL2-FB v1.0, Nvidia 44.03, OpenGL, Terrain quality High, Setup GeForce3/4
2 No Quincux anti-aliasing
1 Custom setup, enable S3TC
-1 44.03 (unless High-perf option used, then adjust is zero)
-1 FB 1.21 patch
-2 Custom setup, turn on Anisotropic filtering 2x or 8x
-4 DirectX instead of OpenGL
-4 Terrain quality Excellent
-10 Terrain quality Perfect
I have a P4-2G rig, with 1Gb RAM, XP, Direct 9.0. No overclocking of any component
Comments? Any other tweaks worth trying? I have been reading most the posts in this forum, and the custom settings tried reflected the suggestions made in recent posts.
Do other Ti4200 owners use High or Excellent terrain quality? That selection alone makes a big difference to the fps
