I've been trying to teach myself guitar for about about a year now. I don't pick it up everyday so it has been going slow. I've been excited about RS ever since I saw the videos and interviews from E3. Picked it up yesterday and so far I am impressed. As a novice that really wants to learn to play, this will give me a lot to learn. It will take a lot of practice to be able to play a song at the highest level. I hope to be able to eventually do that with some, but probably not all songs.

For someone that wants to get a song down before moving onto the next, I wish it would give you the ability to go back to prior events instead of having to pick the songs from the songlist. That's a minor gripe. Overall I'm enjoying and think it will keep me entertained and learning for a long time.

You can go into rehearsals and pick out sections of the song to practice, riff repeater for example narrows down a section of the song to practice.

I've been doing that but it still takes time. Especially if you keep leveling up.
