Hi !
I'am newbie as moviemaker, but my first movie is great for me and I have much fun with this. But there is one question, how to compress. I've tried with many DIVx codecs (low and fast motion) but this is ugly, only save as .mov format (QuickTime) is nice, I have great looking movie, but 900 MB on hard disk :-) (7 minutes).
Is pretty much codecs on this world, I need one :-) but good. I use FRAPS and Adobe Premiere.
So, which codec You suggest ?
sorry about my english.

I prefer DivX...I do NOT like XVid(it locks up my computer often)...
Go to VWC and read some tutorial stuff to get techniques for smooth movies from the experts(not me)...

I used DivX (free version) but dowloaded xdiv recently. In my opinion xdiv gives better quality. Maybe the pro version of DivX is better but it is not free.
However, some people have experienced problems with xdiv. I have not.
I am not a specialist on codecs but I think both of these codecs are based on MPEG4 so you will experience some of the same artefacts in both. (Ghostlike halos around moving objects, small square patterns, etc.)
The QuickTime codec gives brilliant movie but as you experience, it has way to little compression for practical purposes.
I use Adobe Premiere and it appearently supports all codecs downloaded.

I have the xdiv CODEC and Windows Movie Maker.. does this mean I can edit my FRAPS created files in Movie Maker and allow Movie Maker to compress the created files?
Or is there a step I am missing? I don't want to have to fuss with Gordian Knot if I don't have to..

First, a codec is an algorithm used to compress and decompress digital data.
Codec is an abbreviation for <font color="#FF0000">CO</font>mpress/<font color="#FF0000">DEC</font>ompress
Compression is a process for removing redundant data from a digital media file (or stream) to reduce its size (or the bandwidth used).
Example of codecs:
DivX, xDiv, MPEG, WMV
Depending on your video editor you got some codecs already installed.
Other codecs needs to be downloaded and installed.
For instance, divX is not included in Premiere 6.0 and therefore u need to download it and install it to be able to use the codec divX.
What codec to use depends on what u want to do. It's always a compromise between quality and size and everyone has their own opinion on which to use.
My personal opinion is that divX and MPEG gives good quality and small size.
But that's my opinion. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif
