How does one promote crew members??

I've not been able to promote my crew members to higher ranks after completing 7 patrols. Everytime I try, the grey square next to promote states that I need to complete a patrol first? Is this a bug??

I dont think its a bug ya have to have a good or great mission to do so .. maybe your realism is set high and this makes it more difficult to get a promotion choice I get them some but my realism is not to high .. been on 13 missions .. oh also I noticed when I had a promotion thing .. This may help.. that only certain members could be promoted like one or two out of my whole crew .. and the different with those dudes was that one of there lines was all the way pegged out to the right ..I think it is there expierience.. Oh one had and expirience number of 187 our of 150 meaning he was over his top cap of 150 so out of two promotion certificates I choose one for him which mad it 187 out of 200 .. So maybe none of your troopers have gotten above the expierience cap that they are currently at like if its 150 they may be at 125 one other guy was at like 150 out of 150 all the way filled up .. the bottom bar I think its expierience so I gave it to him and now its different more room to grow ..I think it gives him more endurance who knows the manual at times is annoyingly vague.

Do you see the awards with a number next to the medals? That is how many awards you can hand out. I got the same bug; you need to complete patrol first, but I found that if I kept fussing with it, closing it, and then just moving it around I got it to work. Only had it happen to me once so far. I just kept moving it around. . . sorry I just know I had the same problem and then I fussed with it to make it work.

Usually in a good patrol you receive a bunch of medals and a promotion.
I made a 80000tons today for the first time in SH3 and I recieved 3 promotions (those unescorted convoys... thanks to the english!)
To promote a crewman, you go to the promotions place. You can only promote those who have the experience bar full and are not in the higer grade of their category. (so, for example, there is no way to promote a chief senior seaman to warrant officer).

Very good, thanks to each of you.

really, what is thepoint in promoting the crew. New and skillen crewmembers are not that expensive...I think that the balance is off here...promoting a seaman to senior seaman, what good does it do? On the other hand, "purchasing" a warrant officer (with a skill) costs 300 renown perhaps...

This is a bug, I resolved it reloading the game (quit and restart).

Because for some of use those people are not only faceless crew icons but they are our crew.

Do you want to throw out Heinz after he shot down that plane that threatened your boat and who was wounded in the process just because his rank is to low? Good ol' Heinz saved the whole ship and deserves a promotion.

Yeh. Why throw out the guys who have saved your bacon in the past and buy in. Seems a bit harsh.

Developing the crew is cool too. Means you've got through the stage of them being utter lubbers and turned them into super hard galactic warriors who can survive 200M depths without the sub.
