Hi,
Just bought the entire IL-2 series and performed to installation as recommended in this forum (FB+AEP+PF+304m).
When I started the game, there were almost no operations assigned to the keyboard by default. I Clicked on just about every button on the keyboard, and only very few actually did something.
For example, When trying one of the training missions (taking off from a carrier), I couldn't fold the wings, remove the chocks, raise the gear or event select different views.
Do I have to manually configure each and every operation?
Isn't there a basic configuration that could be modified just for personal preferences?

Forgot to mention - the FB+AEP is from the Gold Pack - Not sure if this makes a difference.

Most of the default view commands are on the numpad and require numlock to be engaged or are dependant on difficulty settings. If you're on full difficulty settings, most of the view commands on F keys (F1, F2, F3 etc...) wont work. Turning on the "No Padlock" setting disables F4, F5, Shift-F4/5. Turning on the "No External Views" setting disables F2, F3, F6, F7, F8, Shift-F6 & Shift-F7 views.
Many commands have no default assignments, but everything necessary for basic flight should be assigned. Check the in game controls screen (click the "Controls" button on the main menu) for existing assignments.
Those controls added in patch or game releases later than the original game in the series (IL2 Sturmovik) will have no default assignement to avoid conflict with custom assignements already in use by owners of earlier versions. Also any controls that had no default in the original game continued to have no default assignement in later versions. These include the chocks, canopy, manual raise/lower gear (F4F, I-16 and others have no power gear) and a number of other controls.

Great. Thanks. Now I know why the gear didn't raise and why the aircraft kept shaking. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif
Is there a place that recommends acceptable keyboard seetings?

Hi, http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
I can't think of a source for "acceptable" key-commands. I could send you mine, but I think you would end up doubly confused! I rewrote the whole Controls set-up, having firstly deleted the defaults http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif It works for me, relative to my left-handedness.
However, it is possible to use almost any key, or key combination using Control, Alt or Shift, to set up the functions. Which keys and controls you choose to use are guided by what you wish to do with the sim and at what skill level.
I would be prepared to experiment. Sometimes you might err by placing two important function side by side and then confusing them in the heat of battle. There's nothing worse than closing your wings when you were trying to close your canopy http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/cry.gif Although it can be very entertaining for everyone else if you happen to be flying on-line http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_redface.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif
It's a process to ease into - try to incorporate it into learning to fly the planes - you can enlarge it as you learn to fly using CEM (complex engine management). If you plan to fly twin- or multi-engined planes don't forget to bind keys to engine selection & management.
A joystick will ease congestion. You can bind the buttons directly to controls. Going through the binding process twice for, say, the trigger, will remove the previous setting - thus freeing up the Enter key for another function. And so on.
You also need to avoid using keys that serve other functions, e.g TrackIR, TeamSpeak and others. Personally I keep a written log of all the controls I have bound - both to the game and the peripherals - and I find it relatively easy to keep track of additions & substitutions that way. A bit archaic maybe - but I did use Word and a printer http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Bear in mind that I have an X-45 joystick (soon to be replaced, it's finally developed a problem) and my profile maps most of those controls to the stick. You'll note that pretty much all the default controls are left at default.
