View Full Version : Do UBISOFT devs tend to pop up and comment in forums?

As I'm new to Ubisoft games and forums, do they tend to just let moderators answer questions every once in a while or do the developers actually participate in the forums answering questions and suggestions?
please say they do.

Depends on the forum. But most of the time, yes. Don't expect any communication from the devs this early in production though.

in world war 2 online, the devs constantly jibber-jabbered with the community on its forums, and it would be common to play with them online...
it's a mmo which charges per month, so it was in their best interest to keep the pulse of their gaming crowd...
players respected them for that and it shows(ed) on their forums...
I'm sure ubi has their reasons for not maintaining a close relationship with paying customers...

Mr DePlater, hello??
http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/34.gif
What are the chances of him popping up on these forums and addressing some questions and giving us some more background on the game and it's features???
NONE
he's too busy driving his bentley

TFS_Jackie edit: Falsly representing yourself as a Ubisoft employee is against the TOU and will not be tolerated under any circumstances. The next time this happens, there will be a ban.

Judging by somethings I've seen, especially in the Splinter Cell forum, it's very brave for any dev to come on the forums sometime. Holy geez you should see how mean some people can be over...well...anything.
This one guy, I will never forget for as long as I live, wanted to gripe out a developer because he wanted Ubisoft Shanghai to get rid of the red/yellow/green alert censor because he couldn't tell the difference between the three since he was color blind...

..if you could only hear the kind of chuckle I just emitted after reading that..
but, seriously...when Devs post on the forums which is supposed to be a part of their company, it helps...
but, hey , maybe it just depends on the community....
I make references to World War 2 online alot, but they had (it's been a while since I played) a more docile community because people that went nuts usually got banned from the forums and simply banned from the game..
So, people were respectful of the devs in that sense, and the devs took the time out to get really involved...
They have mini-cons (mini conventions), usually in Texas ( ahem, Jackie ), in which the players and developers meet and get drunk and the sorts. They love WW2 just as much as the community did, and did things together and even built in-game memorials for players that past away and the sorts.
Totally different relationship, but the company behind that game is much less known than UBI, and probably much smaller. These larger corporations don't care about us, they just want the $$$.

You know, big deal if a dev gets made fun of on the forum. 1 person in 10 will do that, but the other 9 will really appreciate him being on.

Jackie,
I don't know the mechanics of the gaming industry very well or to what extent of influence you have, but if there's anything you could do to have the devs comments, we'll be more than respectul and grateful.
If you see our threads, they may at times get heated, but we generally try to present our arguments with well grounded analysis, wit and charm. Thanks. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif

You'll find that the best MOD barely needs to speak at all. If you're smart, you'll see them go about their job, without having to say anything to you.

Sorry man, but you probably aren't going to see devs on a forum. As you've said before you're new to the whole forum gig, I'll go over the heirarchy for you.
Way up top you've got the lead designer, the head hancho. Most of the time, you probably won't hear his name mentioned.
Then, you've got the devs, who, as you know, work on the game.
Then, you've got the community team. These are the guys hired by Ubisoft to handle the game's web page, and deal with various community events. They are usually the Administrators for the forum. Now, sometimes the Admins are the MODs for a forum, and other times they dish it out to non-employees, who don't get paid.
Either way, the MODs feed info to the Admins, who feed it to the devs. Since the devs just get all their info from the Admins, there's really no reason for them to post here.

I only ask because I do know that the devs from Massive Studios who are developing World in Conflict are frequently in the forums taking suggestions and are very involved in the community.
It was just wishful thinking that Ubisoft would take the same approach with this game in particular since many of the forum members can help with mil. research, myself included.
I know they've been stating they have tons of research, but can it ever hurt to have fans also offer info especially when you don't have to pay them! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

Well...Ubisoft has more clout than Massive in the gaming world...
they're too uber and awesome to spend time on the boards with eager gamers

I disagree 900%. One of the steps to becoming a mod, obviously, is joining the forums. Well the whole reason I joined the forums in the first place is because I am a gamer and I wanted to discuss playing certain titles. I'm not going to stop discussing something I love just because I became a moderator.
Also, having been a mod for over a year I can tell you that when you only post to reprimand people, it causes a backlash. People get upset that you are only around to punish and not participate.
I know there are quite a few moderators who, once having become mods, only post in the moderator forum and just basicaly ignore the rest of the community, tuning these forums into a heirarchy, but I don't want to do that. I've meet too many people on here that actually turned out to be very good friends that I would never have met if I did my job without having to say anything to them, as you say.

So Jackie, what appeals to you about Endwar and as a female gamer is it just the gaming or do you also stay in touch with military developments and like the fact that it's based on near future miltech like exoskeletons and other advanced projects that the Pentagon is working on?

Actually, right now I'm not entirely sure if I will be getting EndWar. I came here as a moderator because there were no mods assigned here and there were some big problems that needed to be fixed.
However, having said that I do play all the other Tom Clancy titles. GRAW and Rainbow Six I like for the gameplay. Splinter Cell I really like as a series. The storyline and main character are great. To be honest, when it comes to weapons and what not, I don't know anything about that stuff.

Oh well would have been cool to discuss high tech weapons with a girl since it would be so unusual.

If developers want to post on the forums then it's entirely their own time that they're devoting to this. Most of them will work really long hours and just want to spend their free time relaxing and not spending time online, but you may well get a few online chatting.
There will be Ubisoft reps around though. I'm one of them http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Yes, Jackie is right. Let me correct what I said earlier.
A smart MOD doesn't need to post as much. If they get rid of all the noob spam, and ban the "over the top" users who need to be banned, then community get the picture that they're responsible.
I also know of this "backlash" that you speak of. I was actually part of it. And, I have seen the MOD who only posts to reprimand people. That one's actually a pretty funny story. The Admin was bored one day (this is a pretty small forum), so he made an "Insult Thread" where you would just make fun of the person above you it wasn't meant to hurt anybody's feelings. So, you can imagine the rest of the guys have fun with it, and start swearing at each other, and having a gay ole time with it. Well, the Admin goes psychotic, locks the thread for being "to mean spirited" (and about half the forum as well) bans someone, and warns about 3 other users. Then, everyone goes crazy, 4 threads pop up flaming the Admin, and the next day the forum dissappears.
