View Full Version : Sinking in shallow waters

I've seen so many threads in which people complain about not getting credit for sinking a ship because its hull was resting on the sea floor, due to shallow waters. The only way you can get credit for such ships is if secondary explosions rip them apart.

In my opinion, this is how it SHOULD be. Ships resting on the bottom like that would be easily salvageable and repairable, due to their being partially above water and also being in such close proximity to land.

Case in point: Pearl Harbor. Many of the ships damaged there sank to some degree but were then able to be repaired and eventually sent back out. This would not be possible if they took that kind of damage in deeper waters.

I don't stop firing until I see the "ship destroyed" type.

Yeah that's what you have to do in shallow waters... which I try not to venture into anyhow.

When I'm feeling particularly mischevious, I find that a good ramming (slow speed) does wonders to break those stubborn ships apart.

As it stands, the sub's damage model for ramming is pretty borked, as is being discussed in another thread.

i have tried to engage and sink one task force in shallow waters, i have destroyed 1 Yamato, 1 Kongo, 1 Ise Battelship, i was at around 3800 meters when i have launch the first two torpedo at Yamato and the speed settings at 3 knots.
After little seconds the destroyers intercept me, i don't know as i have made but steering at full speed at left and right i have avoided them and theirs depth bombs, but one of them as follow me too long and too much hitting and damaging my steering, i have surface and destroy it whit deck gun, ok, i'am live but my patrol is finish here, whitout steering is not possible return to brisbane.

I have to admit.. this game is very emotional, almost for me.

again sorry for bad language

Look on the bright side - by winning a gun duel with a destroyer you are already a subforce legend!
(Although I have to add 'along with the tooth fairy' when one includes realism in the mix)

What about me? Last night I was assigned on patrol duty to the Coral Sea. I was at 79% realism, with Manual TDC on. I had the fortune to come across a convoy but the misfortune to find escorting DDs and it was stormy in daylight. My periscope did not have balance on. It was tough work gathering data but I determined data of good enough quality to send to TDC. I saw a few freighters but I picked up two Modern Composite Feighters that I was approaching 45 degrees off port side fore deck. They were traveling at 12 knots as that was their maximum speed but because it is a storm they would be moving at 5 knots. My intuition was right, and I sank two but I expended all my fish. I moved away but unfortunately having avoided being rammed by a small freighter at periscope depth a DD nearby was alerted and headed to my position. I ran out of good quality air and batteries were less than 10%. I was forced to surface. My gunners could not man the guns as the weather is too bad, so I manned it myself. The DD was 90 degrees on my port side. It had one gun working, the others did not turn to fire on me. It turned to ram me, so I went hard to port. Then hard to starboard so I was behind it. All the while I raised the gun before zooming in to estimate a distance of 700m then aimed for it's ammo racks. After 6 shots the thing blew up and sank quickly. I took some hull damage but it was repairable.

Yeah davejb, thanks for the subforce legend ^^
however my realism settings is at 77%, i have take out manual tergeting system, external view and event camera. I have played SH3 for long time, at 100% realism, but i figure that i can play SH4 at 100% only when i know this game very very well, practically from now, since i play this game everyday from 22 March.
My next career will be on 100%.
