There's gotta be some folks out there who had a Death / Release pool going for Duke Nukem Forever. Time to square up, because it is DEAD!

3-D Realms Shuts Down (http://www.pcworld.com/article/164487/duke_nukem_fornever_3d_realms_shutting_down.html/)

It seems an anonymous source pinged Kotaku and Shacknews to deliver the not-really-bombshell news that the studio is closing due to funding issues, and that employees at 3D Realms as well as Apogee have already seen pink slips.

If this is true, I'm sure that somebody would eventually pick this up.

Just because of the near myth Status of that game, I think most companies would stay away from that IP like the plague

I'd imagine the opposite will be true. Take-Two still holds the publishing rights, regardless of 3D Realms being shut down.

Another developer could theoretically swoop in and purchase all the game's assets from whoever owns the license, probably George Broussard.

This entire situation has raised Duke Nukem's profile to a level we haven't seen since like 2001. Someone with a good amount of Unreal engine experience, like Raven, could bring on some key 3D Realms staff and team them with their own guys, and finish the game off in like 6-8 months.

I have no doubt this will be scooped up and finished.

You've got better chances of the mod community making its own version of a new Duke Nukem game than Duke Nukem 3D to ever be released.

Yeah, but that doesn't mean I can't still hope. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Looks like some new footage of the game has popped up on the internet.

A brief shot of a stripper makes the video slightly NSFW, but check it out:

Actually looks pretty damn good! In the right hands, not only could it be finished, but it could actually be worth playing.

Hope no one has cashed anything in yet.

The DUKE is NOT dead.....YET (http://www.gameslice.com/2009/05/18/3d-realms-statement-on-duke-forever/)

The mystique lives. He just will not die!

They should keep development running for another 5 years, just to keep the joke/legend alive. After all, the process is more important than the product, amirite?

In all seriousness, though, I hope it gets released. At this point, just so those guys can have some sort of closure... because I'm sure any project that goes through the **** they went through (LOL WUT NEW ENGINE!) has some extra emotional attachment.
