View Full Version : Far Cry - great gameplay, horrid "red tape"

Is anyone else fed up with trying to play Far Cry online? It is my absolute favorite fps multiplayer experience, and yet I am sick and tired of being unable to connect to a server for whatever reason, and then being unable to play for 1/2 an hour because my CD key is in use, or else having to re-enter my CD key time after time after time.
I don't understand why there is such a big issue with getting multiplayer to work correctly, and *easily*, as a paying customer I expect to be able to play the multiplayer portion of the game without all this hassle. I am going to be wary of future Ubisoft products and wait to hear reviews on the multiplayer situation before I spend my money again; they've had plenty of time to fix any bugs, so what's the hold up?

Use the time where your cdkey is in limbo to go download maps so it does not happen again.

bjanga makes a pretty good point. The most common reason that people are "suffering" from the CD key problem is because they don't have the proper maps. Get map packs 1, 2 and 3 as well as the new SC map pack @ http://www.farcry-maps.com

Sunto,
Ditto what BJ and PJ have said.
Visit the forum often and keep your rig current with the latest patches and map packs. Things aren't nearly as frustrating as you perceive them to be.
Welcome to the community.

Back from my winding down bf2 binge to complain once again about the CD key bug.
Yes it's true that if you have all the map packs etc. it doesn't occur all that much.
and yes it's true that it's fairly liveable, (altho it might possibly cause ulcers if you're the kind of person with a temper)
but
thats no excuse for ubi to pretend it doesn't exist! ARRRG! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif
in my current battle with ubi tech support, i am being told that they've fixed the problem and i'm the only one having the issue. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif that looks like a lie...

BTW, you don't actually have to type in your CD-key everytime that happens. Just hit "cancel" when the empty CD-key box appears. It still remembers your CD-key. When your CD-key has dropped from the server, it won't ask you for the key and lets you right in....no need to re-type everytime.
Hope this helps,
Luger

Quite the combo..playing fps games with a bad temper.

Yes, we all yearn for FC utopia free from the CD key issue. I guess it's a question of whether or not it's worth the occasional aggrivation. This is something that the individual has to figure out for himself.
What helps me cope is making an Alt+Print Screen print out of an explorer window showing my Levels directory. I keep it in front of me whenever I'm in MP. If a map name comes up that is the least bit unfamilar, I disconnect immediately and check my list to verify that I have it on my system. You have to be quick, once a game ends you've only got a few seconds between the map name appearing and your system attempting to load it.
Perhaps others have come up with a better technique for dealing with it, but this works for me. Is it worth it? Totally.

meh, just means i tend to go thru keyboards faster than usual.

i'm not saying that farcry isn't still a great game, i just think ubi has an obligation as supporter to keep working on fixing bugs until We The Players are satisfied.
my technique is to keep writing to their tech support no matter how much they ignore me. great stress reliever.

HA!
Ah well. To be honest know to some degree what maps you have will help with the CD key problem. Just disconnect before the map loads, that's what I generally do and I can't remember the last time I entered my CD key...

I'm with ya, Night. You wouldn't be passionate about the issue if you didn't have a love of the game. You're not alone and we all feel the pain. Everyone can choose their own path in terms of how to deal with it.

ok, well then they should support us until the product runs as it was s'posed to then. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif
@PJLE
i agree about the maps, and the idea of printing off the maps folder is a good one. i do wish that if i see a map that i'm not sure i have, i could find out by trying to join the game, like i can in any other multiplayer game...
the big thing for me tho is my somewhat unreliable internet causes me to get disconnected all too often. having to wait half an hour after losing my connection really doesn't improve my mood. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

I had no idea I needed these map packs. Maybe they could have a sort of announcement system to inform people like me who had no idea about this type of thing? I'd just like Ubisoft to really rethink the way their current Multiplayer situation is set up, because even if these mappacks I'm downloading now (thanks so much for the link!! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif) fix the problem, I'll still be wary of future titles until I hear the general consensus and whether or not there's the same type of problems.

The system ain't perfect, but you managed to find your way to the community and obtain the info you need. Just be sure to check in and keep yourself informed. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I have also been a player plagued with your current woes...
After upgrading my maps, and patches, and such...
I can say that, It's never been more easy, or fun, to participate in one of the most enjoyable titles I've ever played on PC...

I personally have never had a problem with my FC. The cd key works fine, and I never have to repeatedly enter it on starting the game.
The only problem i can see with cd keys is if you have a pirate copy of the game, then of course your cd key will come from a key gen, and as a result will be in use by 100's of people each day.

I downloaded all the map packs you guys suggested, I still am having the occasional "error loading map" kick off. I noticed the last one was due to the map mp_urban_2, doing a google I could only find a single map pack that had it, it was in french and I didn't have whatever was necessary to extract a .rar file... so is there a common mappack I'm still missing?

i agree with you on this i cannot play the game at all online because when it asks for my cdkey i enter it the way it is on my manual and i get cdkey invalid everytime. i bought this game because i played the demo and it was awesome the graphics the ai and so on but what idiot came up with the cdkey function when you go online that is just bull **** now if your a gamer you know that every other game manufacturer makes you put in the cdkey when you install the game and that is it not when you want to play online that just makes big problems like what is going on with farcry if i was crytek and ubisoft i would fire the person that cameup with the idea to do that with farcry and i would make sure he or she never can get a job in the game industry again anywhere i spent my hard earned money on this game and i can't even play online because of the idiotic idea of makeing you put in your cdkey when you go online that is just dumb fix it or noone will buy anymore of your games of farcry i know i won't granted you have some of the best graphics and ai like i said earlier but you donnot know how to do the multiplayer right at all think before you do something so stupid like this people test it out maybe you will see that it doesn't work half of the time i even went as far to get a new game thinking it was the game but when i got home from the store with my new game and went to go online the samething happened again this is bull**** developers how is it posible i can have two invalid cdkeys when the games i have are brand new gameshuh explain this one to me crytek and ubi http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

Jason I think you are missing the point m8...
You only need to enter the CD key once.
Unless you have a corrupt installlation AFAIK the only reason you will get asked for it again is if the server that you have just left has retained your details as an active player.
This was introduced when PB was included in the game, I think at patch 1.1
Yes it is a bug, yes it should get fixed...
But why does it usually happen?
99/100 Because you have tried to join a server running a map that you do not have a copy of.
There is no auto download feature. So if you want to play on a server hosting a "custom" or "community" map it is your responsibility to download it first.
Try this site for downloading the comonly used map packs:
http://www.farcry-maps.com
Install these and ensure that you have the correct patches installed and you will VERY rarely be asked for your key again.

That's gotta be the longest sentence i've ever seen! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif
if you're getting "invalid cd-key" every time you try and play multiplayer, i'd recomend writing to tech support, cause that doesn't sound like the same cd-key bug we're all talking about...
who knows maybe one of their "open ports" instructions actually has some merit?

not really because i have the same problem i cannot go online . when you click multiplayer i have to sign in and then put in my cdkey . when i do that i get cdkey invalid please try again. so i do and get the samething so it is not just him or me infact alot of my friends have the same problem as well. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif oh yeah as for the whole pb thing it is not pb's fault because i play .aa and other pb protected games and they don't do that. so it is the game developers fault not pb's. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Just a thought on the invalid cd key thingy, don't forget to type in the minus's so your code should look like xxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx which is different to some other games, where you ignore the minus. I realise you have probably tried this already but thought it's worth a shot http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

A common problem i think, I did that myself when i got the game. I think the devs should spend some more time ironing out some of the multiplayer bugs. The single player game is cool but the staying power of a FPS game in todays market is its multiplayer game. Making it user friendly is one step in the right direction. Maybe making patching an automatic feature, filters on the server list, that kind of thing.
