I was so excited to play Driver. I was so close to pre-ordering it, and I don't pre-order very often. And then I saw that I need a "permanent internet connection" to play it. My internet connection isn't permanent. So you know what? If you want to make the pirate gaming experience infinitely better than the gaming experience that involves me giving you real world dollars to support your company, AGAIN, then I give up. I get the message. You don't want me to buy your games anymore. So you know what? Deal. I won't buy your games anymore.

As far as the "permanent internet connection required" thing, you can use a modem to connect, you just have to always have your modem connected while you play (as I am aware).
Multiplayer, if available, may not be an option for you with that connection, though.
