Online Tournament Ranks – Earn your place as Hokage!

Hi everyone,

I'm happy to see that many of you are very excited about our new Online Tournament Rankings! I took the liberty of asking our developers to explain in great detail exactly how it works.

Everyone starts as a Student-ranked ninja. The goal is to become a Hokage-level ninja by earning experience points and being among the best Jonin-ranked ninjas on the Leaderboard. Experience is earned after winning a match, or to a lesser extent by losing with honors (hurting your opponent at least 50% his maximum health). Once you gain enough experience points to pass to the next rank, which can always be seen in a [current/needed] format, you get an exam match. This match earns you no experience points, but makes you acquire the rank you accumulated experience points to get. Then the cycle starts again until you reach and acquired Jonin rank, after that you need to keep gaining experience points to raise your total and be among the top Jonins, which nets you the Hokage title and bragging rights.

As you level up, you will always be fighting similar-leveled characters, with a few exceptions (which I'll explain later). Students can fight in the basic street map against Students, Graduates and Genins. Once you reach Genin, you have to make one last match in the street level before moving up to the forest level, where you fight Genins, Chunins and Jonins. Only Jonins and Hokages get to fight in the Tower map. The Street map earns you base experience points, forest matches earn you much more experience points while Tower matches earn you the most points.

The only times you get to fight people widely out of your level range is upon a fresh log-in. No matter where you were when you logged out of the online tournament, when you log back in, you need to make one match in the street level, no matter your rank. Hence, a Student can fight a Hokage who just woke up and is logging on and needs to move back up to the Tower level for greater base experience awards.

But fear not, for if/when you manage to beat one of your superiors, the game rewards you with more experience points, the larger the rank difference, the greater the gains. The opposite holds true as well, for a higher ranked player trying to constantly fight lower-ranked foes will get a penalty, greater the difference, the greater the penalty. In the end, our Student facing off against a Hokage will more than likely earn twice the amount of experience points, while the Hokage, at best, might earn half.

Is there a limit to how many Hokages there can be (eg the top 20 or something)? Or is it more a matter of once you are other a particular points threshold then you are Hokage forever?

lol... I can't wait to test ma skills on this game. I'll make it to the towers. I won't lie and say that I don't get beat by a scrub player every once in awhile but just remember everyone it's a game.

this system sounds really good and seems to allow for more balanced play... In theory.

I say that cuz soulcaliber tries the same thing but u still get spammers and people quitting just to jack u out of points.

Lets hope this works as it sounds like its got tons of potential!

HEY.... instead of the rank hokage...why cant the player just become a kage....you know like in episode 6(not really sure) they talked about the differnt ninja villages and there leaders.....like the sand leader is called kizakage (if thats how you spell it).....the leader of the village hidden in the mist is called mezukage (or whatever)im pretty sure you get what i;m trying to say....

wait um so that means there can only be one Hokage at a time in the tournament leaderboards/whatever?

what if the current Hokage decides to never show up? how will the new Hokage be determined?

and does this mean that it's possible to de-rank if say a Jonin loses a lot, could they end up being a Chuunin again? that would be kinda whack, maybe. it wouldn't matter how many times Kakashi is defeated by Naruto or anyone, Kakashi would still be a Jonin, right?

I'm not sure about the Rage mode. It sounds too
one sided with less chance of the other player
of making a comeback, but that's where skill
comes in, they'll just have to play better.
And it's good that stuff like airblocking is

but one of the things I'm concerned is the higher
rankes quitting because they know they will
only get half experience, and more penalties, whether they win or lose against lower ranks.

so those people might end up quitting and refreshing in search of equal or higher ranks.
This may also be worse if players are demoted if they can in fact lose too much experience/xp.
That would cause some players to quit playing online after they reach Jonin or Hokage once.

But even if that weren't the case and no one can be demoted, there is still the question
if players can still lose experience or something that causes them to take even longer to rank up. well ya it's kind of vague how
the experience and ranking up works exactly when
it comes to losses, but so far I haven't read
any demotions, so I'm guessing people can't lose their rank.

but the word penalties, makes me think they
lose something else. I dunno, there's still
some aspects about online tournament ranks that are left in the dark for now.

but hmmm, upon reading the last paragraph again, it seems the only penalty is that the higher ranks get less exp beating the lower ranks. and no one loses xp if they are beaten.

I think because probably only a handful of people out of hundreds/thousands will ever reach Hokage.

I mean the achievement in itself counts as something, it doesn't need to give GP to prove
you accomplished that achievement.

I dunno, but ya know, I've been thinking it woulda been so cool if this game's tournament
supported character creation. ya know, create
our own original characters if we wanted to and

ah well, but Ubisoft is probably saving that feature for a Naruto mmorpg or Naruto:Shippuden
when they make the 3rd game. There is still
plenty of room to expand on the multiplayer,
but this is a good start. haha maybe in 2 years people can live in Konoha together and
train and compete and stuff, kinda like in Saints Row 2's co-op and character creation, but Naruto-style.

but yeah it would be tricky to make a persistent world for more than 2 players, while
keeping the world's activities intact, that's
why in SR2, the player limit for city freeroam/story was just 2, but at least they
could still do the entire story, activities and everything together.

but competition-wise, we have yet to see how tournament mode will look in TBB, but yeah,
hopefully in the future Ubisoft will be interested in including character creation next time for our original ninjas. ^_^

thats kinda good for 1 v 1 clan matches... have the 2 players fight and also have another 2 players in their spectating.. just dont tag them in. Also, i wish they would make 2 v 2 Ranked ^^ i would be a happy person =]

which is why when i play halo 3 double team i scream at my partner for doing poorly...or not because it's a GAME that you play to have FUN. lol arguing with a friend over a naruto tbb 2v2 match makes me laugh.
