Okay guys I just finished my 5th patrol in my current campaine, and wow! Its the first month of 1940 and I am on patrol with my VIIB.

My patrol assignment was BE, so I went the long way around up past Scapa Flow. While I did have a storm enroute, just north of Scapa the weaher cleared to glass seas and I gunned down 2 small cargos and a bomber enroute.

But then I find a large convoy W or irland. Perfect setup, glass seas for once and I intercepted it bout 3 hours from sundown. Nice convoy, littered with C2s and tankers. Some C3s and a passenger liner, but they were nutral american. All escorted by a single VW destroyer up front.

For once I decided to take the destroyer. It's alone, and with a spread of 3 electric torps from 1000 meters she sank like a rock. They all hit, perfect spread bow the stern!

So to the surface I go, and spent about 2 hours real time pounding every brit ship I could. I used my torps as fast as my crew could load em on the bigger C2s and tankers, whilst my deck gun focused on the waterlines of the little ships. Man, those unarmed merchs really like to try and ram you! I gunned one down about 200 meters from impact!

In the end, 64K and I used every last torp and ammo I could find, including starshells- they work great for igniting them tankers!

Bout the funnest couple hours I've seen yet! Nothing but gunfire, exploding ships and torps wissing through the water the hole time.

This needs to be addresed in a future patch. In a situation like this a convoy would scatter as soon as that destroyer was taken out.

If you look at the map, considering contacts are allowed opiton, then the ships in a convoy under uboot attack do break away from their routes...slightly..but not as much as in say SHII and they tend to reform rather quickly per ce.

Sail up to grid AM, northwest of Ireland, and hang out near the middle. I've seem the most convoys in the area of AM28/28 and AM51/52. I've been through there 12 times now, and seen 11 convoys. If you stay there for a week, you'll almost certain find a convoy, by radio report if nothing else.

Yep AM is were I have made almost all of my convoy contacts, but then again so far I've only been sailing for the 1st and 7th flotilla. I did come across one going through the english channel south of Bristol, but I didn't attack it knowing them destroyers would pound me in 25 meters of water.

And yeah, they did start evasive manuvers and zig-zagging as soon as the destroyer went down but they did stay in realitive formation apart from the occasional one trying to ram me.

Still sweet though, I suspect this kinda patrol is only going to happen early in the war and I just got real lucky with the weather to lol.

But...I was real temped by that american passenger liner...but don't really know what Bdu would say about sinking a neutral liner.

AM grid is good for finding convoys, as is northeast US coast (although with realistic fuel it's tough going there without an IX boat). They are really not that rare. I've yet to see my first task groups, though... daddy needss to bag a big warship... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif

my all time high was 91,117 tons. That convoy really needs to scatter when attacked by a uboat, especially when unescorted.

How about 93,746 tons on my first patrol, including 2 destroyers. One V&W and one C. The V&W was steaming along all happy like at 7 knots and I found myself in perfect position for a stern shot with an electric torpedo loaded. Hit her square amidships with a magnetic pistol set just .5 meters under the hull. Blew her right in half. The convoy was all mine then, except for the 4 C3s and the small tanker that flew the American flag. I am playing at a 54% realism setting with limited fuel and ammo.

i dont think it needs to be addressed ,as it is the *Happy Times* after all...try it in 42 and youll be in for a rude shock as all the convoy ships are now armed
and you have serious problems fighting on the surface,,,,,,make the most of it while you can
youll be fighting just to sink one ship in 2 years or so

Yeah lol I was thinking that to when I surfaced to do battle. My thoughts went something like this...
large convoy now without escort...poor saps this early in war don't even have machine guns to shoot at me...weather is good...this probably won't happen again...MAN THE DECK GUNS!

And the whole time to I was really waiting and watching the sky for allied air support to show up or to see a couple destroyers come to ruin the mayhem, but they didn't.

And once I ran out of ammo, it was flank speed due west into the sunset for about 2 hours lest I can only assume ASW assests were enroute lol.
