View Full Version : New 9800XT Crashes

I just replaced my recently purchased 5900U with a new 9800XT - I was curious if there would be a noticable difference. I installed the latest drivers from ATI (3.10) and now my computer crashes to a blank screen while in FB but not while actually flying. (I left my computer with FB running - on main screen - to take care of a few things and found it crashed when I returned about an hour later. Repeated the process to test it and, sure enough, it crashed to a blank screen after an hour or so. I've checked all screen savers, power savers, etc and they are not turned on. I can post my DXDIAG, but don't want to waste anyone's time if this is a known problem. I know it isn't heat, although that came to mind. System temp is steady at 38 C. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
Cheers,

What power supply do you have? What are your BIOS settings for AGP voltage, timings, and PCI latency?

Salute!, Hunter. Thanks for the interest. I'll try to provide the info, but I'm not sure I have the right data from the BIOS. Anyway, my power supply is 400W, AGP Apeture is 128MB, DRAM Timing Control set at By SPD, DRAM CAS Latency 2.5T, DRAM Addr/Cmd Rate is AUTO, CRU Freq is 133, and DRAM Freq is 200.

There is probably more you need, but I don't know enough to find it. It's strange that someone who was a test pilot for the F/A-18 can't sort out a computer, but there it is. To each his own, I guess. Thanks again for helping. I'm always impressed by your posts, your helping hand and your professionalism. Great work, Hunter! Cheers,

I see you have an SiS chipset. What model/brand Mobo is it? The driver dates are fairly old...need to check and see if there are any updates available. Also sometimes the KX drivers cause an infinite loop error. You can try setting PCI latency to 64 if the settings is available in Bios. The 9700 and upseries of Radeons are really power hungry. I have my AGP voltage set to 1.6 but on some mobos I've had to set it to 1.7 to help smooth out some power fluctuations in the rails due to power supply issues.

The MoBo is an ECS, Model L4S8A2 - this is a custom machine built by a commercial company about a year ago. I recently checked to see if there was an update for the BIOS and they said there wasn't. I don't believe the KX drivers are the problem...I had the 5900U in for about four months and never had a problem...unless the ATI cards have a conflict? I'd love to set the PCI latency to 64, but I could not find it in the BIOS. Same thing with AGP voltage...I found AGP Apeture, but not voltage. If you can give me a steer toward the right area in the BIOS, I'll give it a try.

My apologies for appearing so stupid, but I just don't know enough about this. I need to hit the sack now...work day tomorrow, but I'll check again tomorrow to see if you have any more suggestions. Again, many thanks. Cheers,

there are a few driver updates available for your chipset at SiS direct. Last bios shows a date of 1/20/03http://download.sis.com/index_step1.php

Thanks for this, Hunter. I did find I needed to update the BIOS and have done so - my first time to try that, by the way. Now I need to sort out how to update the drivers for the MoBo that I downloaded! I still haven't found out where I might be able to adjust the PCI Latency and the AGP Voltage...I can't seem to find them in the BIOS Setup. I'll keep working on this and, if I find an answer, will let you know. Thanks again and cheers,

Hi Hunter! Well, so far nothing seems to make a difference. I did install the other MoBo drivers you mentioned, but no change.

With FB running, the computer crashes to a black screen (no signal detected) after about an hour and the only thing I can do is hold the power button in to reboot.

Is there any possibility that the Catalyst 3.10 drivers could cause this? I rechecked system temp immediately after it shut down and it was only 38 C. I may try the 3.7's to see if there ia a difference. This is clearly due to my change from the NVidea 5900U to the 9800XT...that is the only thing that was changed.

Cheers,

If you're playing for about an hour and it locks it could be a few things.
A) Heat on card only (case temps)
B) Infinite loop issue/old nvidia driver remnants
C) PSU
D) AGP Voltage too low from PSU

does your mobo have any type of voltage monitoring software? If so run it under load and post avg when done

Hi Hunter! Thanks for staying with me on this. I've narrowed this down a bit more, as follows:
1. I don't think it is a heat issue as system temp don't exceed 33C and CPU temps never exceed 41C, but I could be wrong about this. I've got three fans going and the sides of the case are literally cool to the touch even after a lot of gaming.
2. Old NVidea drivers...now that is a possibility and I'll chase that down next. I'll run Detonator_RIP to see if that helps.
3. Other than knowing my PSU is 400W, I have no way to check voltages under load...MoBo doesn't seem to support that. I'll do the best I can within the BIOS...see info below.
4. AGP voltage too low...hmmm, don't know how to check that either...my apologies for my ignorance.

I did try one thing that has made a small positive difference. I disabled VPU Recover and now, instead of crashing to a black screen when in the game, after approximately an hour, things just freeze up (joystick, mouse, keyboard, etc all are ineffective). This appears to happen only when FB is running (sitting on Start Screen), but I am not at the computer, i.e. I've left it for awhile and haven't shut FB down. By the way, I've confirmed this only happens when FB is open...I left the computer running for a couple of hours (desktop showing) and it did not freeze up or otherwise crash.

I played FB for about an hour, then quit and quickly checked the following in the Health section of the BIOS:
CPU Core Voltage 1.42V
Vcc 1.8V 1.77V
Vcc 3.3V 3.23V
Vcc 5.0V 5.02V
+12V 11.71V
StandBy 3.3V 3.45V
StandBy 5.0V 4.99V
Voltage Battery 3.07V
CPU Temp 38C
System Temp 30C
CPU Fan 1 Speed 2410 RPM
CHS Fan 1 Speed 1700 RPM
BAK Fan 1 Speed 3600 RPM

I'm afraid that is all I can provide, Hunter. I'm not a great deal of help, I'm afraid. Let me know if you have any thoughts.

Cheers,

I also just switched from a 5600 Ultra to a 9800 Pro. I was getting the black screen lock ups after a while of playing - not just FB but other games too. I switched out my old PSU for a new Enermax 450W PSU, it seems to have worked but I couldn't be 100% sure yet as I havn't used my PC that much over the last couple of days.

I'll let you know how I get on - but it won't be until the new year as I'm away from home at the moment.

The reason I suspected the PSU to be the problem was that after locking up and crashing - the PC was dead for 20 or 30 seconds. I couldn't turn it on again and no power LEDs were lit on the motherboard. Is this happening to you?

Also try and download a program called motherboard monitor and lets see if we can get voltages under load. If those are fluctuating heavily under load that could be a problem as the PSU is borderline.

S! Hunter82 and Italianofalco! I have made your suggested changes, Hunter, and the problem is solved, at least on my rig. Thank you so very much for your help!

Also, in search of the ever-nebulous increase in FPS, I upgraded my P4, 2.8, 533 FSB to a GA-8KNXP MoBo and a P4, 3.2, 800 FSB. So far, the new rig is running well and I've had no problems. I added Motherboard Monitor as you suggested, Hunter, and there is a significant increase in CPU temp from my previous rig. During sustained FB flying, my CPU seems to hover around 54 deg C with the CPU fan maxed out at 6,000 rpm. Case temp is around 25 C, so that seems okay to me. I'm a little concerned about the CPU temp, though. Is 54C too high for sustained use? Also, you mentioned earlier that my 400W power supply was "marginal" and that was with the 2.8 P4 processor. Does the upgrade to 3.2 P4 now mean my PSP is definitely too weak? The voltage fluctation shown in Motherboard Monitor while running FB seems quite minimal, but I may not know what to look for. I can post the numbers if you wish.
Sorry for the continual questioning, but you are the expert and I need all the help I can get! Thanks again and cheers,

Hunter82

As long as the voltage does not fluctuate alot you should be ok. You might want to invest in a better CPU cooler. Did you use the supplied pad on fan or add a thermal paste like artic silver?

The stock cooler is usually pretty good. Have you tested it with that one? I prefer the thermaltake or vantec coolers.Make sure you did not put too much artic silver on. If there is too much it has the opposite effect and traps heat. Use the edge of a credit card or a piece of plastic (low static not some type of sandwich wrap http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif ) to spread the artic silver.

Hi Hunter! The instructions I had (which I tried to follow closely having never done this before) said to use a single-edge razor blade to keep the silver compound from being too thick. Having said that, I was convinced I'd scraped it all off and put some more on! From what you are saying, I think I may have added too much. I think I will get one of the CPU coolers you mentioned and try this again. I used an OEM processor and it didn't have the fan & heat sink with it.

Thanks again for all your help. Cheers,
