I'm sure many of us do not have the 7zip utility..
perhaps it offers a better compression ratio, but i'd rather not install another program just so that i can unzip one file http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif
either a zip format or rar file will do.
thanks.

Try Zip Genius. I switched to it from WinZip and like it better. Get here... http://www.zipgenius.it/index_eng.htm or here http://www.snapfiles.com/get/zipgenius.html

Besides, it's absolutely free.

WinRAR had no problem extracting The RUB archive.

The nice thing about a zip is that everyone can unzip it. Hell, XP comes with the ability built in! But now we're back to the days of inconsistancy. Got one guy doing .rar, another doing .7z.

I'm with blue76 on this one. I'm getting tired of having to download a new program for all these.

You can rename the file to end with .rar and open it with WinRAR.

Many moons ago, I felt exactly the way you expressed yourself.

But the facts are that there are better archivers than WinZip and archive utilities that support the variety of file types out there.

I made my move from WinZIP to WinRAR about a year ago. Others prefer WinACE. All I know is that now I can seemless access most popular archive files by just doublicking on them. With WinZIP, I couldn't do this.

That's not to say that WinRAR's interface is better than WinZIP's. It isn't. But one-stop-shopping for a single utility that handles all of these file types is what moved me over.

The world keeps on turning.

There is no need to rename. WinRAR recogizes the file type.

ok, tried it with winrar, said something like unrecognized format or unknown file type.. maybe i have an older version of winrar http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif
also tried to download the zip utility that GT182 mentioned, but i couldn't install it, seems the file i downloaded was corrupt http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
now i'm stuck with a 7z file i can't even open http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif
i guess i'll try to download the 7zip utility later.
one of these days i'm going to get broadband and my waiting days will be over.

Why don't you simply download and install the latest WinRAR version (http://www.rarlabs.com/download.htm)?

Iceows.
Superior to both Winzip and Winrar as it's only a shell extension.

well, i remember i bought the utility back around 2002 and don't know why i should buy the new version since it works well with zip and rar files.. the new one is offered as trial, so i will have to ininstall it after a few weeks? plus, i'll need to uninstall my previous version to install the new one http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

Trial will keep on working after 30 days, with a pop-up window at startup.

It should also automatically offer to uninstall your old version when you install the new one.

Sorry Blue, wish I could help you buddy http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/cry.gif

I totally understand your frustration on this. It would make things simple if people would just put there archives in .ZIP format just as fizilbert has already mentioned. Simplicity!!!

I have a utilty called Aladdin Expander. Its totally free and as soon as you click on a .ZIP file it opens it right away puting it in a folder for you in the same directory that the orginal archive was in. I love it because it is so very simple. It dont archive files, but I dont need to archive files. With a 40gig main drive and a 40gig backup drive I got tons of space.

ah, good. then i'll get it http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif i suppose i can deal with popups. i'm use to using winrar and i pray the interface is similar to the older version.

BobV_07, thanks for the info, though the idea of a free utility is tempting, i'd rather stick with what i'm use to, i guess i'm stick with the old type of guy http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif (which is why i find it so hard to upgrade my uboat http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif i'm hanging on to my typeIID as if life depended on it! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif )

7zip? That's a new one.. I wouldn't count on it, but check the documentation.

It does handle ZIP, ARJ, ICE, SFV. Very convenient to just right-click on a group of files and choose to compress them rather than opening a program to do it.
