Gears is an okay shooter and with the right people it is fun. Ranked is ******ed and the game is not very consistent. Oh well Jeb is getting a tree sixty soon and Grog just got Vegas. My other boyfriends have all the games so I dont see myself playing much Gears anymore.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

i think gears deserved it. oblivion has been done 1000 times before, where as gears was a whole new control scheme and take on the shooter genre. it had a good single player, and has great franchise starting capabilities. it has the best and most original single player since halo. oblivion has been done before.

the multiplayer is also really fun and can be greatly competative (like halo is in mlg, for example) if you know what you are doing.

as far as people saying it is inconsistent, i disagree as well. the shotgun is hit and miss a lot, but it is supposed to be. it's a shotgun. all of the other weapons are totally skill based, aside from the frags which are a little silly due to the latency problems.

only qualms i have with it's multiplayer are the latency problems and the massive host advantage that they cause. other than that, i think it's great.

it is a game like no other i have ever played. that is why i say it wins.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

The point about the shotgun I agree wasn't good. Any game could seem or become competitive (And I wouldn't say on Halo level yet) if many people play it, and it being shinny helps to make more people play it too. The game could have been done Much better, but I don't care much as wont be playing it after I get the games I want in 07. And frags are bad because you can stick some one 2-3 times normal melee range. I think if Vegas looked better it would definatly win over GoW.

Another thing to see is how long it will last, I would rather play Halo which is about 5 years old over GoW which is a few months. It is about preference so I guess it dosn't matter much anyways.

I'm not trying to say GoW sucks, because it dosn't. I just prefer how other games play over it.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Yeah I think they call it The Elder Scrolls Series. I'd really like to play the other "thousand" versions of Oblivion that are apparently out there. The possiblilties of gameplay in Oblivion completely outshines anything GoW has done. OBLIVION FTW!!!<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

for one, saying you verbally dominated someone in a conversation about taste doesn't make any sense.

and when i said that gears had not been done before, i meant gameplay wise. the cover system has been attempted but it hasn't worked like it does in gears. the gameplay in multiplayer is totally different from any other game that has come out and if you can argue that point, go for it.

the locusts are also not aliens.

i also also disagree still about the shotgun. no one complained about its inaccuracy in halo. it also really irritates me when people say that it is unrealistic and compare it to a real-life weapon. the game is meant to be balanced. if the "shotgun" worked in games like halo and gears the way a real one does, the game would be horribly unbalanced and everybody would use only that. it is meant to be the most effective close range weapon in the game, as it has been in every other game aside from "realistic" shooters. the shotguns in vegas and lockdown, and the submachineguns for that matter, are overdone and totally unbalanced. there is virtually no reason to use anything besides the MP7 in vegas aside from aesethics or the need to stand out.

i also gotta say that i really have no problem killing with it. i just try to avoid saying things like "well you guys just must not know how to use it" which honestly probably is the case.

oblivion is the same dragon and orc killing game that's come out 100 times before, and it still fails to out-do world of warcraft. the gears of war story line is a little generic, but how more generic can you get than a knight in armor slaying a dragon?

and when it comes to vegas... that game is the same one i've been playing for years, only now the graphics are updated and the submachines actually kill people, oddly better than assault rifles do.

GoW is better than both, and that does not make me a moron. i'm just from a different community. one that focuses on multiplayer competetive ability rather than graphics and a cool looking dragon or demon to kill every 10 levels. gears is a great competative game that is original and has the best graphics i have ever seen on a console. apparently IGN agrees.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

You guys put halo on a pedastal. It's a great game, but it has nowhere near the competitive level of games like Starcraft or Counter-Strike. Most highly "competitive" games require strategy above skill. GoW (not that it's the first) achieves that by fixed spawn points, round-based gameplay and bottleneck encounter points. Not to say that Halo isn't fun (because it really is), it isn't as well suited for competition as others.

Now about the GoW bashing .. since when did the movie critic method of raping and pillaging every movie that comes out switch to Video Games? You know what gets me to buy a game? ENTERTAINMENT. Halo is fun. Counter-Strike is fun. GRAW is fun. Vegas is fun. GoW is fun. Each of these games is a lot of fun, and each of these games has weaknesses. You know what? They're GAMES. Time-wasters. Some people (most people it seems) found GoW to be fun. I did not find it to be fun, infact I found it to be offensively unfun. The only thing that made that game even remotely fun for me was co op. Outside of that, I'd rather replay BLACK. That's my opinion, and lord knows not everyone agrees with my opinion. Point taken, Lambda and others. But the question isn't whether Gears is fun. That is subjective, and something that I will readily concede. I would never buy Call of Duty but having played it, the game's appeal is obvious. Chromehounds is a favorite game of mine, while most reviewers were left unimpressed.

Gaming journalists treated Chromehounds as they should have &#8212 with clear objectivity. Impartiality is less evident in their response to Gears, the game's purported superiority never having been explained by reviewers as more than self-evident. Some reviews were littered with caveats yet the game rated near-perfection.

Enjoyment is subjective. Craftsmanship, however, is not. Take the character "Cole." Listen to his voice. Can you hear a distinct timbre in his vowels and sibilant consonants? The actor's voice has been dropped a few pitches. Repeat: the creators of IGN's Game of the Year had so little investment in their work that they could not be bothered to find a baritone or bass.

I begin to question the independence of gaming writers; whether an equitable review is worth the potential loss of revenue from the panning of a major title release.

Now first off I will like to state that Starcraft and CS are very highly competive games, it is proven. To say that Halo/Halo 2 isn't as highly competive is frankly just incorrect. Not only do you need to be highly skilled at the game, you/ your team needs to have strategys for map control, weapon control, objective control, and many other types. Also it has already been proven that Halo and Halo 2 are highly competive. Look at how many tournaments and lans that have Halo or Halo 2 as their primary game.


But back onto topic.

I have always had a suspiscion that GoW had to have the best graphics to date so it could mask its many, many inperfections.

Like I mentioned before, I'm not surprised GoW won but like many others, I'm just not able to play it by myself. I only considered it to be fun when I went through the game with a friend. However, when I tried playing by myself, I just found it couldn't hold my attention for more than 5 minutes.

Although I suspect this goes for all shooter games for me. I only beat Halo 2 because I had a friend to co-op it with me. The only type of games I could play by myself and enjoy are action/adventures and RPGs. Other games like GoW and Halo are only fun with multiplayer.

On a sidenote, Twilight Princess counts as this year's game right? If so, that gets my vote for GOTY.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

IGN got the "Best RPG" for PS2 down pat, though. FFXII is really *that* good.

GoW is a fun game, but Oblivion is by far the best game of the year. Followed by...
Best co-op: Marvel Ultimate Allience
Best tac shooter: R6V
Most fun shooter w/most options: Far Cry
Best Graphics: TIE Oblivion/GoW

1. Gears of War was the most talked about 360 game.

2.A lot of money(i.e. marketing) was spent on it.

3. Reviewers overlooked the problems with the game and heralded it as a masterpiece because A. read #2, and B. when you have 1 decent/good xbox360 game going against 5 or so mediocre/poor ps3 games, the scores and awards have to even out..

Zelda:Twilight princess got the same treatment...except add one more reason.. "I'm a 33 year old ******* reviewer who grew up with Zelda, therefore all zelda's must be completely awesome"

Don't worry, Halo 3 has already claimed Game of the Year for 200X

Yep. Iron Man pretty much comes off looking like a total ******bag. I'm glad that Spidey finally came to his senses. I knew it was going to happen all along, it's one of those things that was just-so-obvious.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">
