There should be a video clips thread since there's a picture a day thread. Sometimes a video is needed to express the mood a bit better than a picture. Good thread for FRAPS movies posted to Youtube.com also!

The above is a single frame from Peter Jackson's upcoming WW1 short film 'Crossing The Line' - the first film to be made with a revolutionary new movie camera called 'Red One' (amazing quality and resolution yet a fraction of the cost of a conventional camera)

There's a 91MB clip of the film on the Red One website:

http://www.red.com/gallery

Believe me, it's worth downloading and watching full-screen, so you can appreciate the wonderful picture quality!! (Apple Quicktime Player needed)

(notice a particular sound effect during the end credit screen?? A hint of things to come in the full version perhaps.... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif)

You really need to see the above hi-res Quicktime version to appreciate it fully, but for those of you who are too impatient to download it, here's the same clip (much lower quality) on YouTube:

Wow, very interesting !

Did you noticed what happens in the beginning when the camera films along the trench ?

The foreground and the background stays sharp !

If im not mistaken it is normally not possible to display a thing in front of the camera and one several meters behind it fully sharp. The lens can only focus on one distance at a time.

Am i right ? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

I hadn't noticed before, but I do now! That does seem unusual... As far as I understand, you're right about the focus of near and distant objects (I think this is known as 'depth of field' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depth_of_field)). I'm fairly sure that depth of field can be increased on a shot like that by moving the camera further away and zooming in to frame the shot - but that also lessens the effect of perspective, which makes the picture appear 'flatter'... (Note - I could be wrong about all this! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif )

The cast/machined aluminium casing looks like some kind of high performance engine! Perhaps it's a prototype version, as the Red One website doesn't feature anything that looks like it:

http://www.red.com/cameras/photo_tour

I found out that the whole 'Crossing The Line' film was shot in just 2 days!

And did you notice the sound effect at the end? ...I seem to recall Peter Jackson is a WW1 aircraft enthusiast http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

That film Crossing the Line looks very good, it's like a breath of fresh air to see a war film based on something other than WWII, don't get me wrong I love my WWII war films but it's nice to see something new.

Goose - have you heard about the upcoming German WW1 film 'Red Baron' ?

<LI> trailer on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJghJNAjc1k) (unofficial?)
<LI> Official website (http://www.redbaron-themovie.com/)

I've read mixed opinions of how the movie will turn out. Maybe Celeon can tell us something about it?

There's also the Canadian WW1 film 'Passchendaele' due out next year:

Any of you Canucks know about this movie? The trailer looks good, even if the voiceover is not so good!

I just checked wikipedia for that movie and it says its a German-British (no hollywood http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/inlove.gif ) co-production so it might turn out to become a good one. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

It also (the article not the movie) draws attention to the recent historical discussions about Richthofen's death.

The movie will show the version in the history books : That Richthofen was shot down by the Canadian rookie pilot Roy Brown in a unlucky moment.

But it seems that there is doubt about that now. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

See this article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manfred_von_Richthofen#Who_fired_the_fatal_shot.3F )

Maybe they will film an alternative ending of the Lewis gunner firing the fatal shot at the Baron and include it in the DVD version... (I hope so, as it seems the most plausible cause of death). The question then would be: which Lewis gunner?!

Celeon, I've managed to get the movie out of the page and uploaded it to Filefront for your viewing pleasure:

http://files.filefront.com/RedBaronMovieTrailerzip/;8780193;/fileinfo.html

(it's in a zip file)

If you still get crashes when playing this in the standalone QuickTime Movie Player, then you should try re-installing QuickTime...

"followed by what!?" http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

One thing I liked was was putting a portal on the ceiling above me, and then another one right below me. The only problem with that is it is hard to get out.... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

It's not really a hard game, it just requires you to think. A lot. but it is really fun, too. And the Ending is really weird.

A 3 minute presentation of the CERN particle physics laboratory

CERN in three minutes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ceGuAUVAZ30)

And here is a insider video of the GIANT particle detector "ATLAS" in construction http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif in ONE of those gigantic underground installations there. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

ATLAS Particle Detector (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agLPr-zRdJc)

Its unbelievable how much particles they already created there which normally cant exist in our universe at all. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

So if you think "Black Mesa" is fiction.... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Did you know that the Internet's creation started there ?

The first webserver of the world was stationed at CERN and is displayed for visitors there today.

So if you want to know more

CERN @ Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cern)

And i believe you all know him http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Stephen Hawking at CERN (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUMz9zyaZPA)

Here is a short explanation from wikipedia

The European Organization for Nuclear Research (French: Organisation européenne pour la recherche nucléaire), commonly known as CERN (see Naming), pronounced [sɝn] (or [sɛʀn] in French), is the world's largest particle physics laboratory, situated just northwest of Geneva on the border between France and Switzerland.

The convention establishing CERN was signed on 29 September 1954.

From the original 12 signatories of the CERN convention, membership has grown to the present 20 member states. Its main function is to provide the particle accelerators and other infrastructure needed for high-energy physics research.

Numerous experiments have been constructed at CERN by international collaborations to make use of them.

The main site at Meyrin also has a large computer centre containing very powerful data processing facilities primarily for experimental data analysis, and because of the need to make them available to researchers elsewhere, has historically been (and continues to be) a major wide area networking hub.

CERN currently has approximately 2600 full-time employees. Some 7931 scientists and engineers (representing 500 universities and 80 nationalities), about half of the world's particle physics community, work on experiments conducted at CERN.

As an international facility, the CERN sites are not officially under Swiss or French jurisdiction, and some company vehicles have diplomatic number plates.

Several important achievements in particle physics have been made during experiments at CERN. These include, but are not limited to:

* 1973: The discovery of neutral currents in the Gargamelle bubble chamber.
* 1983: The discovery of W and Z bosons in the UA1 and UA2 experiments.
* 1995: The first creation of antihydrogen atoms in the PS210 experiment.
* 2001: The discovery of direct CP-violation in the NA48 experiments.

The 1984 Nobel Prize in physics was awarded to Carlo Rubbia and Simon van der Meer for the developments that lead to the discoveries of the W and Z bosons.

The 1992 Nobel Prize in physics was awarded to CERN staff researcher Georges Charpak "for his invention and development of particle detectors, in particular the multiwire proportional chamber."

Here is another interesting vid in relation to my CERN post.

The "big experiment" that is stated to happen in 2007 in that video was postponed to March 2008 because of a technical piece of equipment failing a quality test.

I found that CERN link extremely interesting, although i must admit, when i first read it i imagined Geneva sinking into the earth and all that was left was a BIG round hole!

Here is a BBC documentary about the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) which will be used to conduct the experiement for creating the mini big-bang.

BBC Documentary (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WvEK5uZXpZU)

They explain it in more details in that one. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

It will propably take decades to analyze all the data that will be recorded with it.

Its really exciting to imagine how much understanding or new questions may result from it. Maybe this experiement lays the foundation for the solution to all of our energy problems as a side effect. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

On October 11, VikingGrandad asked:

There's also the Canadian WW1 film 'Passchendaele' due out next year: Any of you Canucks know about this movie? The trailer looks good, even if the voiceover is not so good!

Paul Gross is shooting out at the Tsu Tsina Indian Reserve,(next door to Calgary, Alberta) and are having problems with the cold. The days are okay but they shoot at night when the temperature drops to freezing. One crew was shooting on Sifton Blvd the other day in the Elbow River. It's glacier fed so can't have been any better.

The rumors say it will be done for Nov 11, 2008. The Military Museums is expanding here (with the Naval Museum) and since there was a Calgary regiment there, they are supplying lots of help that will become a major display in the expanded museum. The Naval Museum is also expanding their exhibits so it will be worth the visit when it opens next year.

Paaschendaele was one of the worst battle of WWI because of the mud, and of little strategic benefit. My uncle won a Military Cross at age 17 in it, but my mother remembered it as the battle where she lost four "beaus" from her high school class. Over half the boys in her Class of 1914 didn't come home.

Not a video, but i found this article today.

Article (http://science.monstersandcritics.com/news/article_1371977.php/New_accelerator_project_launched_to_research_Big_B ang)

They plan to build a giant particle collider like that one at CERN from the videos above, here in Germany now. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Ok, propably it will be a bit smaller me thinks http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

So when you see a bright flash on the horizon : There is a good possibility that this is Celeon being desintegrated by a bunch of exotic dark energy particles. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif
