Well, I had Win98SE and 512MB of RAM too, plus Cacheman but I had to go to 1024MB of RAM. Cacheman was not able to
help the fact that I simply didn't have enough RAM in the first place. Lots of action during FB play made my FPS drop and there were pauses and stutters at the same time. Also magnifying that was attempts to load large of complex maps. Not all of those maps could load into memory and the resultant fetch to the hard drive killed performance. Once I doubled my RAM, Cacheman was able to get my Win98SE OS to handle that large of an amount of RAM that it otherwise would not have been able to use much. Here is my Cacheman report after my latest upgrade to 1GB of RAM. Please note that I have not changed many of these settings so this is pretty much the way it was set when I had 512MB of RAM. I hope it helps speed thing up some, it very well might. But if you can afford it, get at lease 256MB more RAM. They say that 1GB is a small overkill with Win98SE running FB. 768 should do you just fine. Just try and get the exact same brand and model of RAM module ( even match your CAS latency. )

Have downloaded cacheman, gone to 764Mb and as soon as I get to the desktop I am told that I seem to have no video adapter and that the file run.dll is lost. On removing the last 256Mb and restarting a few times, the system suddenly remembers the graphics card and we're in business - nut only with 512 mb??

Cachman or faulty RAM?

Creative SB 5.1, Gainward Ti4800SE, DX9 and Win98SE.

If I remember correctly, the Windows 98SE operating system doesn't recognize any more than 512 MB of RAM. You need to upgrade to WinXP if you want to use the additional RAM.

LOL, i use Win98SE and 1GB of DDR RAM. Cacheman helps alot! I'd recommend to disable memory recovery. The thing is that when you set a fancy recovery value, Cacheman will start to delete data out of the RAM when the actualy is no need to do so or enough RAM is left. Vital data needed for the game can get lost. Beside that, the game will freeze. It's like swapping.

Use a tool like "RamBooster" or "MaxMem" to free up as many RAM as you can get each time before you start to play. That's how i do it. I usualy enter FB with 92% of free RAM (more than 900MB)
