View Full Version : Cliffs of Dover box art

Earlier today I posted this pic at the bannana lounge and I wondered what you all might think of it.
I was considering the title of the game and how it would look if the image and the name were in contrast with one another.
The Cliffs of Dover title is so very British and immediately brings a certain picture to mind. If the picture instead ran directly in counter to it, it's impact might be far more telling.
The image below uses Wiek Luijken's artwork with some very subdued text. No Spitfires, no smoke, flame or Union Jacks and symbols of RAF victory. It jars the eye and imposes itself over Britain's domminion. Conflict is inevitable.

it looks good.
however, Ubi's already got what they want.
name, box art etc mean little to me really, its all about what the games like when i play it.
also, the name il2 meant nothing to me when i bought it, never heard of the plane, the box art was nothing special, and that didn't turn out so bad....

http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif It's a cracking picture BUT i feel it needs to tell a tale that all looking at it could understand.
Maybe some bombers in the far distance below crossing over the White cliffs.
The battle of Britain film had a great one that summed it up.
Why not use a series of screen shots from the game itself, shame they won't listen to some of the talented people willing to help.

From an enthusiast perspective it's awesome and a massive improvement to the actual box art. From a "catch someone's eye as they walk past it at the game store" it doesn't work at all which is why it's totally different to Ubi's box. Their only goal with box art is to grab your attention and get you to buy it so EXPLOSIONS, TONS OF PLANES, SPITFIRES!

I hated the silly name since day one, The box art looks like it was done by some clueless fool that has no appreciation for the subject matter. Well it was either that or it was knocked up in about 3 mins.

Well normally marketing is about doing something original and not the thousandth rerun of what others have done countless times before.
Exactly that kind of picture you already have on that old "Battle of Britain" movie from the late sixties (although there at least they put a Hurricane at the center of attention) Pretty well every game that had the Battle of Britain as topic has come out with a very simular picture. Does anyone really want to say marketing has come to a stand still since the sixties? As to the picture itself that looks like either a rushed job done by some one who doesn´t give a hoot or by some apprentice trying to figur things out.
Not well done, but beneath the line, the contents count for me, I would buy it even if the cover art had some one mooning.

This is art. Remember, they are marketing this stuff to 13 yr old sociopaths with hormonal anomalies and the adult equivalents! This would sell to a history-oriented person who likes fine things---Ubi would be horrified!!!!

Up to a point i agree, but you are preaching to the converted who will already buy.You need to get it across to those that didn't know or don't know they want it - - yet http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
It needs to leap out and scream and stranglehold the casual buyers looking at magazine adverts, internet advertising and boxes on shelves surrounded by other products,it has to scream BUY ME ,and also tell the tale in one picture and a split second. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Behold:
http://www.tothegame.com/res/game/12690/boxshot_uk_large.jpg
Note the missing spinner, and flames coming from a totally empty piece of wing which looks as though someone bit into it.
Feathered, yours is much better. "Cliffs of Dover" changes from the symbol of defiance and victory, to "the target". I don't think casual shoppers will pick it up though...

Eh, could be worse. I don't really like how the He-111's look, they look kinda static and copy and pasted.
In any case so long as it's a sim sim and not an arcade sim I'll be happy. Hopefully controlling the cover art is about as intrusive as Ubi gets with the game.

Looking at Feather's mock up I already have the feeling of impending combat. The stomach knots up. My hands grow sweaty as I near the object of the attack. My eyes are darting looking for counter attack.
There's more character in that picture than one with 100 He 111s and Hurricanes coming to intercept. I can look at that box art and my imagination conjures up more than many other box cover renditions ever could. IOW: I like it.
Frankly, if UBI is marketing CoD to 13 year olds, they have no clue who their buying public is.

I quite like the typeface. For some of the older members here, it might bring back memories of the covers of Purnell/Ballantine, Illustrated History of WW2 books that came out during the 1970's... Loved those bloody things.

Feathered IV, personally I think it looks great and hints at the wave of oppression that is "on the way".
M2Morrises also suits me well, yet sadly the masses want color and action not to expect to learn something.
However....Neither do I feel would help sell in the DukeNukem, GTA, Halo generation....What probably would to them would be a screenshot on "arcade" settings with a big bubble stating "kill them all", and a kill counter for that sortie at 2,374 (as clearly CoD is using the rearm-refuel mod).

The reworked AI in BoB:WoV was pretty good IMO. The plane models were adequate if not sometimes almost as good as IL2. Damage model was horrible. The scenery was a draw back, but still very serviceable.
Visually I'll take IL2, hands down. AI? BoB:WoV. FMs were good for both I thought.
I must say I HATED that Brit yelling in my ear, "SHOOT HIM!!!!!!"

The "shoot them" complaint was a common thing but I believe you can edit that right out. I believe I turned off the squadron voice because it was annoying me.
your squadron mates do come to your rescue when you call them unless they're very busy.
In Il-2 they do when they feel like it.
I believe in BOB there is also a nice request you can ask your squadron leader for directions back to the group in case you get separated.
I don't recall if Il-2 has this but it is a real nice feature.
Not to worried about BOB anymore seeing that COD finally is rearing it's head.
BOB does have an awful lot of nice features I hope Oleg swiped from the game. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif
The one thing that saddens me is the merlin engine really needs about the most powerful computers in existence to get all the best out of it unlike early Il-2 versions that would run on a weaker system just fine.
Hope COD is like the early Il-2 was.

For some reason I never experimented fully with config file in BoB.
I know there were a ton and a half of options to select.
I had a hard time getting used to the track IR with the 6 DoF. SeaBee had a tutorial, but I could get tit to where I was comfortable.... especially in 109s which were what I preferred to fly.

With the options you could completely tailor the game to your personal likes.
Great feature
A lot of people had the track IR right down and wouldn't fly without it.
I really should have given it a try. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

I like BnZ. Even TnB'ers I fly BnZ.
Landing wasn't my problem in the 109..... most of the time. Taking off was a biotch for me. Go figure.
My nephew was getting into flight sims, and since I was not flying BoB at the time I let him have it. Not sure if he had just watched the BoB movie and was excited about Hurries and 109s or not.
LOL DKoor. I'll paint by numbers, but I won't sim by numbers. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

Your different that's for sure but taking off with the 109 wasn't a picnic either.
All one has to do is go to youtube and see how difficult a 109 really is the take off and land compared to a spit or Hurricane.
If oleg even gets that close to half right they will need a separate thread for just this problem.
I can see it now.."I crashed my 109 for the thirteenth time straight, what do I do now?"
The 109 will make a awful lot of guys switch sides or fly the Me-110. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

sometimes I was rushing to get airborne and WAM!
I truly believe 109 pilots were far more worried about take offs and landings then the missions they flew.

I think landings and take offs wouldn't have been as hard in BoB if you could get a feel of the torque. I had a hard time gauging it without FF, and consequently ended up over steering. One tip of the wing and BoOoOoOoM!
In flight I didn't have that problem. Hmmmmm. On landing I did do extended glides so I came in real slow with no throttle applied. Easy Peasy.

There were patches in IL@ where I thought the AI was really good, and actually would have sweaty palms. But Bob was a lot more consistent in that area of flight simming.
AI is going to be make or break for me in CoD. I'll buy it out of the gate, but I will be critical of the AI toward my next purchase should the AI be bad.

You know I had that in my old microsoft FF stick and it crapped out on me.

Ya the patches helped quite a lot but as you said they weren't perfect.
YUP the AI will certainly make or break it for me too.

I don't like the AI in IL2 at all. Haven't flown 4.10, but 4.09 wasn't any fun for me.

But it had its moments... I very much disliked the concept tho.
You are some sort of general-tactician and also a pilot?! Never could get into it really. However the game is nicely done, flying and hitting something is everything but easy, but I feel IL-2 is much much more ahead in just about every game aspect.

I never played the tactical end for the same reason but I should have tried it. One can throw oneself into a mission you have set up before and get into the meat of the battle.
I almost always played the quick missions
You would think that might be boring but it isn't whatsoever because while they begin the same in a half second that all changes just like real combat. It's always different with different outcomes.
What I loved was THE BIG MISSIONS with hundred and hundreds of aircraft.
Those are truly breathtaking
The one problem is if you don't have a uber computer like I don't the frame rate goes right down in the largest dog fights. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

I don't like the box art on CoD:IL-2 if that's how it's going to look. These things matters to me so I sent my own box art suggestion to 1C:

They replied very positively so fingers crossed Gents!

That box art with the three 109's is really fantastic and works on oh-so-many levels. It even gives the title "Cliffs of Dover" proper context and meaning.
IF you know anything about WW2. The problem for Ubisoft and 1c is they've got to grab the attention of shoppers in Walmart, Game and Tescos. It's a beauty contest for the attention and wallet of Jo Average.
I read somewhere, probably on here, that IL2 in it's various incarnations has sold nearly a millon copies over the years. I wonder how many of them are being regularly used now? Most game software ends up in the trash, given away or just lost for a variety of reasons.
I'm an enthusiast but my copy of Lock On is lost behind the book case somewhere and my copy of CFS3 is still doing a grand job helping to prop up my brother-in-law's workbench in his garage.
For most buyers CoD will be a brief fling cut short by other interests, or they can't be bothered to learn how it all works or their pc will run it like a magic lantern show and they'll give up quickly. A few, a very few will end up here! Good luck to 'em http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Maybe not. Given the time of year of release of the game, I think they won't care for Joe average but rely on simmers & commnunity, and possibly, the quality of the game to sell itself.
One million copy is quite good for a PC game and for a simulation, but it's not that huge compared to other Ubi games; plus that figures is for almost 10 years, several installments & add ons...
How many copies did WOP sell?
That said I really like the 109s cover
