Dont think so.
Can you dock at a friendly base for resupply ? Or does it have to be 100k on 1 load of torpedos ?

It has to be in one go. You cannot resupply. Also, it is more challenging on higher realism, since you get more near-misses, and limited fuel leaves less time to cherry pick. Btw, my first try left me at 99,700-ish tons http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif And I completely ran out of ammo on my VIIb, including the flak gun http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif Practice, and you'll get it http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
No, flares cannot sink ships. I forgot how I've done it, but if you edit one of the cfg files, you can remove the 20 SS shels and load 20 HE instead. PLease don't cheat and add 1000 HE's....

Thanks for the reponses guys.. & girl http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif
Good to know I'm not alone in my quest for the holy grail of tonnage.
Cheating takes all the fun out of the game.
As frustrating as it is trying to sink 3 small merchants with star shell's is, its the best I've ever done! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/partyhat.gif
I have one more external re-load...I'll save that for a C2 ...then Ill have 100k!....it will be a good day! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif

You can take out small craft with your starbursts. I have taken out tugs and fishing boats, but they aren't worth your time or the effort.

On the contrary, tugs are approximately 1000 tons each. I sank one with the flak guns once, after using a helluva lot of ammo. So it is totally worth it, IMO. So if you were like me on my 99,700 ton patrol, and you still had some flak ammo left... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif Or get a bigger boat http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
Trust me, it is not that hard at all. Just don't shoot at ships like coastal merchants with torpedoes. That's a waste. Find a convoy, pick out the heaviest ships (tankers), re-load, find the convoy again, next go for troop transports. After that, C3 cargoes. If you still have ammo, go for Victory cargo's if available, C2's if it is early in the war.
Exceptions- if you ever see a passenger liner, shoot it first http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif And try not to waste more than 2 torpedoes on heavier ships. Actually, it is very easy to sink a liner with just one fish.
If it is early 1940, look into Loch Ewe or Scapa Flow for big ships. Check out the bottom of the Hunting Grounds section on the community manual for ships and dates.
Have fun!!

Everyone has given good advice. I'd add to target fuel bunkers. When using guns, aim at the water line. Always know where the warships are before you attack. Hang in there & you'll both make it. Once you figure it out, you'll get another, then another. Next thing you'll know it'll seem too easy.

It's really important to be selective and not waste fuel and ammo on small craft. I only recently reached 100K+, but haven't posted the log yet. Luck had a lot to do with it though. I came across a 44K ton liner and a 15K bogue carrier so I was pretty much halway there. I could have gotten more, but I ran aground and nearly sunk the boat, so I went back to base with about 5 fish left.
