i had this error two when i was starting. i did two things that MAY help, though i havnt confirmed any others solving the problems by this.
First, download the patch into the BIA systems folder, open the patch and patch the game before opening it. secondly, ( and this is something i figured out an hour later ) if you DONT have admin abilites on, or you have multi-account names on your PC, try logging onto whatever account has admin abilites and running it on there once, for some reason it solved my problems.

Reinstalling did the trick for me.
There is an option during the uninstall to keep your saved games but if you want to back them up manually they're in C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Gearbox Software\Brothers In Arms\PROFILE NAME. Note that Application Data is a hidden folder so you must enable the viewing of them to gain access.

Krimlin,
Did a reinstall work for you mate, it didn't for me so I am still scratching my head wondering what to do next and wishing I had bought SH111 instead.

Basher, the game will not run on 98 or ME. You have to have XP or win2000pro.
