Submarine vs submarine battle would be a good suggestion even for single player (career) modes.

Just a word of caution, it is not necessary to make the same post twice, I have removed it for you.

Sub on sub combat is not historically absent, but it is extremely difficult. Without the torpedo having active homing like modern torpedos or at a minimum passive homing hitting a submarine is almost impossible. Because even at PD spotting and ranging a submarine via pericope is almost impossible the only option left is a sonar only approach. While this is possible, developing a sonar only solution takes a lot of time. Assuming that the your solution is good the depth the sub is operating at is still unknown, so your only option is to shotgun at a variety of depths and hope.

The other issue here is that ALL of the torpedoes used in WWII were conceived and designed as tools for attacking surface targets: ……Consequently, none of them had the ability to “think” in three dimensions.

This “fixed depth” aspect of WWII torpedoes is the reason that virtually all “sub-vs.-sub” encounters took the form of a lurking, submerged boat firing at a target that was running on the surface. (…..In short, an attack that was really no different than any other attack on a surface vessel.)

yes it takes time with the sonar, and yes its a werry long term comitment...but the first time i sank a US fleet sub online. will beat alot of RL events.

We had been going for 3 hours. I was the lucky one getting on the stern of him...I could se the shade of him with the scope under water.....

I waitet. He had a pattern, where he speeded up, periscope deapth and down to 30 m...every 10 min he did the same....calculatet when he would use the scope..set torp to 8m...and when sonar gave the slight directionchange (he normaly whent 5 degrees lft when scoping) i fired 4 torps at a 2%angle...

Hit him with two torps at 600m

boring yes. Thrilling...would i do it again....absolutly....

Sub vs sub didn't happen unless one sub happen to catch its opposite on the surface, unaware of it's presense - just like any other surface ship. Once alerted however, the fight was pretty much over. Once he dived, your chances of hitting him are abysmally low to non existant.

That one scene in U-571 was incredibly hollywood.

Since AI subs are now in SHV (confimed) it should be possible in therory.
Its true that most Subs sunk by subs where hit while surfaced.
With one exception, U-864 was sunk by HMS Venturer while both Submarines were submerged.

To see how they did it, go here.

(from Uboat.net)
9 Feb 1945
HMS Venturer (Lt. J.S. Launders, DSO, DSC, RN) torpedoes and sinks the German submarine U-864 in the North Sea west of Bergen, Norway, in position 60º46'N, 04º35'E. This is the only known incident in all of naval warfare in which one submarine sinks another while both are submerged.
---------

Royal Navy Submarines sunk 13 U-boats in total I believe. While U-boats only Sunk 3 of theirs.

JU88 thanks for that bit of information there I always wondered about that, and if it was even plausible. The link to the story was much appreciated.
