I had 2 questions:

1.) How low do I need to go so that I avoid being hit by the bottom of a cargo ships hull.

2.) Is there a bug? If a ship passes overhead, will I take damage no matter how low I am?

The reason I asked these 2 questions is because my strategy was to attack, then dive low enough so that a cargo ship does not hit my sub. I want to try to travel underneath the cargo ship. I reason that the cargo ship's propeller noise will mask my ship. I will need to try to keep up with the convoy. While I am under, I reload, get out of the lane and then attack. Of course, by this point, I'll be attacking the last few ships, but that is okay as far as I am concerned.

So I want to attack, dive under a cargo ship, reload will under the convoy and then go back up to periscope depth attack again.

The tactic you're describing is perfectly valid; ......AND the mark of an aggressive Kaleun!

How deep you need to be will vary from ship to ship. Your recognition manual (in the "Periscope Screen") will give you the draft of each vessel type. The external view function is a big help when you're perfecting this tactic.

There is no bug that I am aware of. I have always been able to pass under surface ships safely, when allowing reasonable vertical clearance. (If you're cutting it close, remember to lower your periscope!!)

.......And you don't have to "hug" the bottom of the screening ship for this to work. You can allow 20 or 30 meters, and the DDs still won't be able to get at you.
