Some of you guys got off topic on one of the threads and started talking about body armor.
Anyway, as some of you noted, there's some ongoing controversy regarding whether DS armor got a fair test run or whether it was prejudiced against by the Army's acquisition community.
So Defense Tech has been following this controversy, so together with NBC News' report on the topic, some letters from concerned citizens to Senators ( http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif , myself included), it has finally gotten to the point that Congress is involved and is holding hearings on the testing.
So the Pentagon Channel will be showing the hearings which start at 10am. If you missed it, that's ok as it streaming video on demand. Here's the website:

Here's another link if the other doesn't work

What kind of body armor does 50 cent wear?
DS or IBA
http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
also...on the body armor topic...a game called "Army of Two" features PMC mercs that wear facial armor...
Supposedly, the facial armor modeled for the game was based on real life concepts..
I did not read the exoskeleton thread, but by nature, that would seem to fit in there..
A giant leap in miltech in projectile-based warfare from ww1 to current day, no doubt.

Are you saying this post should be moved to the exoskeleton thread? Sure, why not, not sure if the mods would do that.
Did you watch the DS hearings?

I was not implying that this thread should be moved there..I was suggesting that the face masks in that game would seem to fit into the whole "idea" of exoskeleton armor in general.

or how about this one:

Here's the company that makes it:

This is one of the reasons why I mentioned in the exoskeleton thread that they should consider the model I showed that Sarcos is working on as it provides facial protection. Snipers after all would then choose to seek the weakpoint in the exo, the face. Sarcos had that in mind when they designed their prototype. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

That's so ugly. You could just tell soldiers will hate that. It's so big, it would get in the way of using your sights, It gives your head a huge profile, and it looks heavy and uncomfotable.
I like the "mandible" style face masks like in GRAW 2 MP. Those looked alot better and more practicle for field use..

covering the face would seem like the next logical step, IMO, in the advancement of body armor..
but yes, that does seem bulky and cumbersome. With some time and work, I'm sure that we'll see some more practical examples..
also...
what about gas masks? would the new face covering armor incorporate some new technology that would prevent its' user from having to don a separate mask in the event of biochem warfare, or would it have such a low profile that you would still be able to get a perfect seal with the outer mask...
Has this came across anyone else besides me? I hope so..

i was just thinking the same thing, i think it would be better if they just built the gas mask into the armor.

Wrong. The next logical step in body armor advancement is to somehow add kevlar sleeves to the body armor.

I'd say DS. They tested it on Future Weapons and it took a M67 blast, point-blank, and nothing penetrated.

DS is'nt going to be aloud in to the next air force Body Armor competion, because it falsely said its armor was level 3 before they had confirmation.

3 Reasons Why Dragon Skin isn't as good as it sounds:
1)Dragon Skin weighs way more than the current OTV, almost twice as much as the IOTV.
2)Also, in extreme weather conditions the adhesive that holds the "scales" in place and to each other failed and several fell out of place leaving holes in the armor.
3)During testing, when the vest was hit from certain angles (the same that the IBA has to survive) rounds were able to work their way in between the scales.
I'm not saying that the Dragon Skin concept couldn't or shouldn't someday replace the current plate carrier and Kevlar arrangement. But be careful not to buy into all the hype that the company and sensationalist members of congress sell to the media.

Yep, pretty much hit the nail on the head, DS sounds great, in practice, not as whizzbang cool in the flesh
