View Full Version : What The Three Lost Sheep Have Found On The Web!

It's a shame, but most of the sites that fly U.S. junk, that are linked to IL-2 have all kinds of fancy web crap and graphics; but very little real information on what a new member can expect. Many of the sites don't even have a contact e-mail address. I can't speak for all new recruits, but if the three lost sheep are any indication, here's a few things site managers can do to improve enlistment...

1) Accurately report membership and currently active members. I would define an active member as someone who flies with the group at a scheduled group time at least once a week. Don't worry if you only have a few members! A lot of people don't want a big group. They feel like they'd be lost in a crowd.

2) What are the duties of the new recruit? Spell it out exactly. If you're like real uptight about protocol or points or the "yes sir" thing, say so! No biggy! Lots of people like it that way! If you are a loose gaggle of friends, say so! If you are somewhere in between, say so! The beauty of it is there will be something for everyone!!!

3) What settings do you usually fly under? I know it varies, but give a general feel. Again, there will be something for everyone!

4) What buckets and bricks do you fly? Again, that something for everyone thing comes to mind again so there is no wrong answer!

5) What days and times does your group fly together? Again, no wrong answer! And a note... I'm an American and proud to be an American. However, if a person from overseas can handle the regular flight times, (many work second or third shift) don't throw them the lame time zone crap! We all know it's just a cover for prejudice!

6) Does your group fly other flight sims? Again, no wrong answer.

7) Don't delete posts by members who say something negative about your group. Wear it like a "red badge of courage"! What is this, propaganda?! When I go to a site that has no dissenting voice I wonder what concentration camp I just landed in!

8) On the home page, have a nice, big link to something like, "information for possible recruits". A new person is not familiar with the quirks of your site!

9) Explain what gear you require. Are you a cable only group? Don't be lame and say we prefer cable. Of course we all prefer high speed, that doesn't need to be said. But if it's an important technical point to your group, say so! Don't be talking sideways on the issues at hand. Do you require Track IR or a high end computer? For you LOMAC fans, clue the recruit in that they are going to need a high end computer.

10) Does your group mostly dogfight or coop or campaign or what? Hey! Here comes that no wrong answer thing again (I bet they're tired of hearing it!)

In general, the European sites have the U.S. sites beat all to hell on all these points. No wonder why their ranks swell while the majority of U.S. themed squads remain the domain of a tyrant or two who have administrative privileges at the site in question. Please don't whine about better German gear or whatnot! Every crate has its strong points and weak points. In general, the European sites were easier to navigate (even if I didn't understand the language!) and honestly reported their requirements to potential recruits!

The opinions expressed are those of Luckyboy. He didn't have time to consult the other lost sheep before posting!

That's 10 people and 2 in training!

2.) Nothing really....just e-mail the CO and tell him you'd like to be apart of the PBNA...I'm not sure what actually takes place...I didn't have to e-mail him cause I met the CO on here. YOu can do the Yessir stuff if you want but you do not need to have it for our squad.

If/When you feel like it, here's are CO's e-mail: bluethunderpcpilot@hotmail.com

E-mail him he'll get you on the way...and if he doesn't respond ASAP...give him time, I will notify him after I write this.

3.) We don't usually have a "set" setting...mainly it's everything ON except these:

I'm going by the HyperLobby layout..

Cockpit Always On: Off/Unchecked
No External Views: Off/Unchecked
No Icons: Off/Unchecked
No Padlock: Off/Unchecked
No Map Icons: Off/Unchecked
No Minimap Path: Off/Unchecked
No Speed Bar: Off/Unchecked

I hope that is good enough to suit you if you join?

4.) Some of us fly the P-39N-1, or Q-10...sometimes any of the P-47 FM's...usually it's just whatever you like. Some squads don't like that, but our squad is mainly about having fun...you may not want to fly the P-39 or P-47 i don't know...just pick whatever you want. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

5.) Okay I won't say anything about TimeZones if you don't want me too...we do fly alot together when we are on...but school has started so that means some won't be able to fly until the weekends, or some have kids and other activities...I however am usually available in the eveings if I'm not gone to town or something.

6.) I don't think they have...we will fly LOMAC whenever it comes out...well I haven't flown any other Flight Sim...except Strike Commander(Jet Sim). That's the only one I've flown.

7.) Unless you mean at our forums...No, we do not do that. I don't know what you mean...?

8.) We have information on our website... http://proudbirdswing.tripod.com. If you still need more...e-mail our CO with any other questions! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

9.) lol We don't base our squad on this...we each have something different but some of it may be the same. Some of us have Cable...DSL...modem/dial-up...so it doesn't matter what you have. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

10.) Mainly it's Dogfight...our own passworded dogfight...COOPs...VOW sometimes but not that much.

Like I said before...if you need any other information just e-mail our CO: bluethunderpcpilot@hotmail.com

5) What days and times does your group fly together?
- Again, no wrong answer! And a note... I'm an

- person from overseas can handle the regular flight

- 7) Don't delete posts by members who say something
- negative about your group. Wear it like a "red
- badge of courage"! What is this, propaganda?! When

- what concentration camp I just landed in!

- In general, the European sites have the U.S. sites

- points. In general, the European sites were easier
- to navigate (even if I didn't understand the
- language!) and honestly reported their requirements
- to potential recruits!

In responce:
5) Time zones are not a cover of predjudice. I have people in the US, Canada, Japan, and Australia flying with our group. Time zones make the difference and for 3 years the overseas pilots have been able to fly at the same time we have been able to. Now I have had to turn down some pilots due to the time zone they are in because if not they would have to be flying at 3am their time, but I have not turned them down without explaining this to them. So time zone is legitimate.

6) your right there is no wrong answer this simply is a question to let someone know what you have been use to in the past. For a trainer officer here it gives them a basis for better training. Mainly it is for our trainer to compare and make his part of teaching flight skills easier on a person who has not flown this sim.

7) It would depend on what the post content has in it. I dont know if you've run a forum or not but there is a contract the admin is responsible to uphold with the provider on this isssue. I for one will not allow posts to stay on that will infringe my contract with my provider. On another note I from time to time remove old posts good or bad to keep our space free for current information.

Also for the in general comment. There are more German squads than US and they cover more time zones because there simply are more of those squads formed out there and they are covered in various countries. Where as most US squads are actually based in the US.

As for the 31st we'll continue flying US birds http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

All of that stuff is linked right there on our front page. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif But I agree that it should be outlined for any new recruits loking for the right fit, otherwise there are just too many open questions.

Luckyboy,
I had originally decided NOT to address this issue publicly as you have so done. For one thing it's not polite, and some would even consider it out right disrespectful. If you or the other 2 ppl had issues you should have brought that to someone's attention and a possible salotuin could have been made possible. However you have endeavored to blast myself and our squad in public. If there was a problem then you should have spoken up. instead you kept it to yourself. and didn't bother to inform anyone.

The fact is that I bust my azz for the 310th. I do 90% of EVERYTHING that is done for this squad. From the web site to the forums, to 70% of all the squad skins. I work on average 20+ hours a week for the squad and have even put my personal life on hold many times to make squad nights, and update the web site & stuff. If you were not happy with the 310th then you should have came to me in privet and said so. I would have been more than happy to help you in any way I could. And I would have gladly sent a letter of recommendation to any Squadrons CO you chose to join.
My point is there is a better way to handle these things than you have chosen. And your behavior after your resignation is deplorable & something that I'm sure other squadrons will take into consideration regarding your application for membership. Never the less I and the other members of the 310th wish the 3 of you best of luck in your future endeavors.
Happy trails. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Golden Eagle, you were one of the first that ever helped me in HyperLobby. You've been a clean, honest, hard to beat and all around honorable pilot. You've been straight up an all around good egg and great example of what the community should look like. I don't remember ever having a problem with anyone who flies under your colors. You've always supported the international flavor of the online community and I'm proud to call you my brother in arms. As a matter of fact, your Whole PBNA gang has been a good reflection of you! You have patiently answered all our questions and I couldn't ask for a better online friend.

I've been trying to chase you down for days now and can't seem to connect with you. Sometimes we miss each other in HyperLobby by seconds; it is very frustrating! You are in the process of developing what I'm sure will be a great web site and program so more people can enjoy the game. In short, you lead by example! I tried to post in your site, but lycos being lycos, it never was up at the times I had available.

I wanted to let you know personally and privately of my decision as to who I will beg to let me join their group! I have to leave shortly for the weekend. My father is quite ill and needs my help. I will be back in Sunday evening. I thought about it and hope you will not take offense at such a public let down. But I thought about it and decided you have nothing to be ashamed of or hide. So here it is for the whole community to see!

My vote had nothing to do with you or your squad. You guys are tops with me!!! However, we did find a better "fit". Letting you down has been my only regret in this whole affair. As it turns out, another squad was just a slightly better fit for the three of us. In the final analysis, we are a little bit more intense than your group as far as organization and training. They've also been around since before dirt was invented and have experience galore!

Don't think of your group (or as a matter of fact, many others as well) coming in a close second. Think of it as my remaining your friend and reliable clay pigeon as always!!!

Copperhead, you gave up any right to privacy in this matter when you deleted our resignations in the 310th private forum less than 12 hours after they were posted. It simply read," I love you guys in the 310th, but let's face it, we are going nowhere as a group". "As a result, I now resign effective today and place myself on detached duty". Nothing more was said and my post was by far the harshest thing said.

You were also one of the first to offer his friendship and guidance in HyperLobby. For that, you gained my loyalty. You were, are now, and always will be my friend! I will not discuss here my reasoning for leaving the squad here and now to protect the privacy and confidence of all involved. You are an honest flyer who doesn't even know how to think of cheating and I wish you, Dmac, Gypsy and all the other irregulars of the 310th the very best. I look forward to being shot down by you in HyperLobby sometime in the near future!

S! to all. Just read the thread. As a 4 month old flyer, getting better daily though, I feel that what LuckyBoy1 has said needed to be said for flyers like myself. Only as far as web sites go and the ability to try to ask or become a part of a unit. The responses from PBNA-Golden Eagle are not what I'm talking about. Those are personal issues and should be handled accordingly. But after reading the whole thread, glad to see things have been ironed out, so to speak. But I've tried enlisting with several units that are openly recruiting and get no response. Now I realize that behind every squadron there's probably only 1, may be 2 individuals taking care of the whole enchilada. And when you take in consideration that all of this virtual squadron flying is, or has to be, a hobby, because lord knows real people have to work real jobs to live real life, I personally don't get bothered to much when no one seems interested in getting back up with me after I've shown interest in becoming a part of their squadron. But I can see where others would take it personally or might even get down right angry. What I would ask of all squadron members, that happen upon this thread, is to make yourselves of service to your CO or whomever has to much on his plate when it comes to the daily grind of keeping a squadron up and running and in good health. And I would ask all squadron leaders to ask for help and put your people to work, especially when you are openly recruiting and you don't have the time to get back to the recruit trying to join your squadron. I know you CO's have people in charge of doing that, but it has been my personal experience that those officers, and I'm only speaking for the six or so squadrons that I have requested joining, don't get the job done. Again, I'm not throwing knives at anyone or any squadron, because we all know that real life has precedence over this. I will not disclose which squadrons that I am talking about, that I will handle personally. But if it is happening to me, it's bound to be a thorn in the side of those trying to become a part of other squadrons. Just my quarters worth on the subject. Striker-26

Membership Requirements
Membership Section, 310th Virtual Fighter/ Bomber Squadron

Membership in the 310th Virtual Fighter/Bomber Squadron is open. Prior online gaming experience is preferred, but not required.

Our philosophy is simple. Our first and foremost objective is to have FUN! We compete to win and expect Squad loyalty. We require that all pilots subscribe to a Code of Honor when participating in any Squad related activity. All Rules required for any sanctioned Squad competition must be adhered to. Squad pilots must, at all times, respect the rights of the other participants in the competitive arenas. These and other membership requirements are outlined in the 310th Virtual Fighter/Bomber Squadron Standard Operating Procedure . If you have any questions, please contact any of the 310th VF/BS Wing Commanders, Squadron Members or our Commanding Officer. Thank you.

Membership Application
*note please read our Standard Operating Procedrure prior to filling out the application form.

I. - Standard Operating Procedure

Section A. - 310th VF/BS Group Membership, Participation, Promotion, and Final Authority

Section A.-1 - Membership Requirements:

A.) Philosophy:
All member pilot candidates must subscribe to the basic Philosophy of the 310th VF/BS:
- Maintain the 310th VF/BS primary objective of having fun whenever possible.
- Compete at all times with "honor".
- Subscribe to self-improvement through Squad training flights and flying regularly whenever possible with Sqaudron pilots.
- Commit themselves to Group loyalty. The 310th VF/BS has built lifelong friendships by just being here.
- In consideration of our historical namesake, the 310th Fighter Squadron, and due to our belief in the Principles embraced by the Allies during World War II, the 310th VF/BS flies only Allied aircraft in sanctioned competitions and events. This is not a censorship of Axis aircraft or the pilots that flew them. But for all other purposes we will fly, from time to time a few captured German aircraft when it best suits our strategic needs.
B.) Code of Conduct:
- Treat others ALWAYS as you would like to be treated.
- Always be willing to assist your fellow Group pilots, if asked. If not asked, offer to help.
- Always represent the 310th VF/BS in an exemplary manner. You are a representative of the 310th VF/BS whenever you are flying online.
- Profanity is not prohibited, but is severely frowned upon. Please remember, that there are young people participating in this hobby too.
- At no time, will any 310th VF/BS pilot fly or formally associate with any other virtual Squad or Group considered a legitimate competitor in sanctioned competitions.
C.) Required Simulations/Software:
You must own or have access to copies of one of these flight simulation games: Ubisoft/Maddox Games' IL-2 Sturmovik / IL-2 Forgotten Battles. These are the primary simulations that we participate in. All pilots are also required to have MSN Messenger and Roger Wilco or Teamspeak2 before the Group training period begins. All of these are freeware programs and can be downloaded directly from the Internet. (please see our Links Section or our Download Section)
Section A-2 - Participation Requirements:

A.) Required Participation Level:
The 310th VF/BS doesn't set participation requirement levels on any of it's pilots. We have members who have been a part of the 310th since it's inception and have real-life issues that must be dealt with on a regular basis. We do however request that all members try to maintain contact with the Group through use of the Forum, email or online communications whenever possible. But for training purposes, and just for a good time we would like to see all of our pilots attend our Sunday night Squad meetings. This will help unify us as a squadron as well as give us all a chance to get to know one another better. Although as stated above attendance is not mandatory.
B.) Initial Probationary Period:
After initial approval of any application, the requesting pilot will be assigned Warrant Officer (WO) status until the Group probationary/training period (60 days) is complete. This is to give both the Group and the WO a time period to get adjusted to each other. If for any reason whatsoever, the WO feels during this time that he doesn't fit in/believe in our philosophy, this would be the time period for that to be discovered. The Group training period is self-paced and is conducted online in the theory of combat flight. We will not tell anyone how to fly. We'll just show you the effective ways and let the individual decide. The final say in approving the completion of the probationary/training period is the respective Squadron Command Staff. Please Note that the same applies for applicants to our Bomber Wing Crew members as well. The exception here will be that all bomber crew applicants will begin training with the rank of Private and begin promotions from that rank. In this instance Promotion to pilot will depend on these conditions,
1. Approval from our Bomber Wing Commander
2. Availability of an open pilot slot in the roster
3. A combat flight assessment by the our command Staff
No one has ever been thrown out of the 310th VF/BS after becoming a member. There have been instances when the philosophy of the Group has had to change from time to time and that has caused differences of opinion and people have left to pursue other avenues, but never was anyone removed from the Group for it. The 310th is a group effort. Every member has a say in any matter concerning the Group. Feel free to voice these concerns at the Group Forum anytime it is felt to be necessary.
Section A-3 - Promotion Policy

A.) Promotion Requirements:
All new pilots will enter the 310th VF/BS as a Warrant Officer (WO). Their status will be "Training". Upon completion of the 310th VF/BS probationary/training period, their Status will advance to "Active". They will then be promoted to the rank of Flight Officer (FO) and be able to participate in any/all organized competitions the 310th VF/BS is participating in, if any. Participation in any organized competition is encouraged, but in no way is it required.
All new bomber crew members will enter the 310th VF/BS as Private. Their status will be "Training". Upon completion of the 310th VF/BS probationary/training period, their Status will advance to "Active". They will then be promoted to the rank of Private First Class (PFC) and be able to participate in any/all organized competitions the 310th VF/BS is participating in, if any. Participation in any organized competition is encouraged, but in no way is it required.

The rank "system", if you will, portrayed by the 310th VFBS is based somewhat on some military standards. Meaning, rank is a reward for longevity throughout a career. In the military, rank is what is used to signify progress throughout a career. With quite a few of the Group members already over the 1 year mark, the virtual career aspect has already begun for many. { Note that the ranking system for Enlisted will be added here soon. Enlisted service is on a voluntary basis only.}

B.) Merit Promotion:
There are certain circumstances that may warrant a merit promotion regardless of the TIS and TIR standings. These circumstances can include exceptional contributions to the 310th VF/BS either in an administrative support role or outstanding leadership and performance in sanctioned Group events. The pilot in question must have a formal recommendation from his Squadron CO. Final approval is by unanimous acceptance of the HQ Operations office.
C.) Waiver of Promotion:
Any 310th VF/BS Pilot/ or Crew Member can refuse a promotion at any time for any reason. He must advise his Commanding Officer of his intentions in writing via email. All waivers of promotion will be considered by a Board of Review, consisting of the HQ Operations office and the pilot's CO and XO. This Board will convene at the earliest possible time after receiving this notification.
Section A-4 - Final Authority:

The Final Authority on all matters of discipline and/or Group Policy is a panel of members from the HQ Staff and all active squadron CO's/XO's. This panel will meet whenever it would be required as dictated by events.

If you are still interested, meet the requirements and subscribe to our philosophy....JOIN us today! We fly primarily through the Hyperlobby gaming interface. Whenever you're there, just let one of the Group members know that you're interested. We are a pretty personal Group (by that it means a lot of Group members have become great friends over the years and interact outside the Group, too) and we like to participate in various flights with potential members to make sure that the "fit" is right. Also, you can leave a message at the 310th VF/BS Public forum, found in the Squad Room. If you have any further questions, feel free to contact any of our pilot's at your conveiance.

This will be our final response to this issue. we feel the matter is closed.

Stryker, contact PBNA, they will give you a quick and honest response. If you are looking for something more formal, try the 361st. If you like the German gear, try and catch JV>44Bolecke (not sure of the spelling) in HyperLobby for a great, mostly Finnish unit. Don't write off the Russian units either as some of them are great. Of course, you then start running into difficulty with the time zone thing, so it's up to you. Yes, some squads are arrogant and do not respond in a timely manner.

The good news is, you can only fly one plane at a time! As a result, it doesn't matter what 99.9% of 'em think or if they ever respond!

See Stryker, no vast conspriracy to shut you out. Most squads value new members and respond. It's just that the internet is not a perfect device to communicate with sometimes!
