If it was just a giant earthquake that would be.. well.. a bit lame. unless when you say giant you mean worldwide..

I'm a bit more interested in what exactly caused the earthquake.
The logical answer would be tectonic plates moving, but that's not worthy of a video game. XF
Maybe some kind of giant monster moving around down there waiting to surface... maybe government experiments gone horribly wrong... maybe global warming and climate change finally took a drastic action to all the pollution and filth that humanity has thrown at Earth.. etc.

actually i hope it would be monsters like there are in Stephen kings The Mist in the ending with that big *** thing. almost like the Cloverfield-monster. i think there is a military project gone terrebly wrong. Could be a big *** tremor to. who would know at this point. i just dont hope it will be like alan wake on new info and pics.. remedy have kept alan wake fan in the dark for a while.

it has to be worldwide, because people could get water elsewhere
