View Full Version : Game crashes frequently...

I've had Heroes of Might and Magic V for a long time, but it's never worked quite properly. =/

It crashes ever 5-20 minutes seemingly at random, even with all of the settings in HoMM 5 turned to minimum.

I have an Nvidia GeForce 7300 GS with 512 Megs of Ram and running at 85Hz. I ran a DirectX Diagnostic and all tests were succesful (I have DurectDraw and Direct 3D Acceleration Enabled, and AGP Texture Acceleration Disabled.)

My computer has 1278 Megabytes of RAM, and two cooling fans. (One on the card, and one on the MB.)

I'm starting to think the problem might just be with NVidia cards... Or perhaps my Power Supply. I doubt it's bad RAM because my brother (who plays #D-heavy games like World of Warcraft and things with his RAM and never has problems) Swapped out my RAM for his and I kept getting the same problems.

I would like to know how to check my Power Supply for potential problems.

Is there any suggestions for what I should do, or any more information I should supply?

I have an ATI card (X800) and have the same problems. In fact, sometimes my computer just reboots with no warning while playing HOMM5. Just tonite it simply shut down my PC. I have no problems with any other games and a beefy power supply, many fans, etc. I have just about given up. The game seems to work OK for short 20 minute sessions, but if I walk away for a few minutes it will crash or lock up.

Both of you should make a thorough DXDIAG.

Type it in the Run function's browsing bar of your Start menu and, click Open to execute.

Copy and Paste it in this Topic Thread's Reply text composer's dialog box.

Do a Microsoft Update's Custom installations sweep of your PC for all the Drivers update that you currently really need.

Upgrade your version of DirectX9.0c to "(February 2007)" onto Microsoft.com's Downloads web-page.

Then set your Video Card's resolution to 1280x1024 (32 bit) (60Hz). Now you will see the full potential of this 512Mb vid. card.

Thanks for your concern Paten....I am a computer tech with an MCSE so it is not a case of ancient drivers or something simple like that. I have followed advice from one of your other posts and updated my Realtek drivers though (good catch) but nothing helped. Before you say it, yes I know new ATI drivers have been released last week. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

Then, go onto DriverAgent.com and, run a thorough scan(its free of charge).

Why this advice? I reread this recent DXDIAG and found a lot of components having this driver date: 8/4/2004. These are quite old, and need serious attention. I have even seen a lot of: 8/17/2001 drivers as well.

And, again: Upgrade your version of DirectX9.0c to "(February 2007)" onto Microsoft.com's Downloads web-page. You ommitted that very important part of my previous post.

Forget all that fake MCSE training, you are now back to square one and, learning how to truly update and upgrade a PC component by component.
Only takes a whole day every year or, so.
Every component can be auto. updated by online autoupdating via through thorough registration of that component of that specific manufacturer.
I know, it seems long and tedious but, after that one and single very long and tiresome day, you will have a truly refurbished completely new PC system. After that day, you will get e-mail messages, pop-up offers for updating and/or upgrading a specific driver and application for it. Your PC will auto. update and upgrade itself as time goes by.

Only after 2 or 3 years, you will have to upgrade the Mainboard, Processor, and RAM cards in order to keep up with these future times rendered present day reality at that time.

Trust me on this, Personal Computers are no longer toys for gaming and internet browsing.

I added the part about the MCSE merely to show I was not a total noob, there was no reason to denigrate my credentials. I have other certifications as well, and if I cannot get HOMM5 to run then imagine how difficult it is for the average computer user.
I did find my chipset needed some updating, due to the fact I had to recently re-install (HOMM5-related?) and I had used the mainboard CD.
We'll see if it makes any difference, but I doubt it.

SirJohn; most of the problems with rebooting and bsods "with HOMMV" are memory related. Check for other programs running at start-up and if ya can not let them run at start-up. Any AV or firewall should be fine but some printer programs and drivers have messed up games. For example; Oblivion will crash if you have any HP printer drivers running. But if you go into ctrl/alt/del and end those processes the game runs fine. So maybe you have something running that doesn't like HOMMV or vice-versa.

Thanks Mech, I will give it a try, but I still feel a game should not force me to disable antivirus to play it. I really don't have much running in the taskbar as I like to keep things clean. Basically just Symantec, Windows defender, and powerchute for my battery backup.
Other games allow me to have a few things going and even alt-tab out and back in with no problem. I with nothing running I have about 700mb RAM still free.

HoMM5 has a very small problem with RAM. How many DIMM slots do you have onto your Mainboard?

One more 512Mb or 1024Mb card will definitely help out. Still, your need to update those drivers. Plus, DX9.0c is at April 2007 version now. Might as well DL and Install it over the February 2007 one. It auto. overwrite the old one right away. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

You will see a huge difference at performance of your main PC tower and peripherals attached to it as well. Look at my other posts within this Forum ensemble of Topic threads for a link towards a driver updating service. You will be pleased after it all, believe me. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/10.gif

Have a wonderful day browsing around!

I have 2 512 sticks running in dual-channel. The Gigabye board has 6 slots. What do you mean "homm has a very small problem with RAM"?

I did try the updating service but did not pay for the full version. I found some of the drivers myself. A few others that were out of date should not make any difference (RAID driver) since I don't use RAID.

I may try turning audio completely off and see if she crashes then. I noticed another poster who has the realkek97 on-board audio and has this problem, but they have it disabled.

I just tried disabling sound altogether and after about 1 minute of playing heroes, my PC just shut off. I even needed to flip the switch on my PS back and forth to boot back up. I am now looking at the power draw as being a factor here. I lowered my fan speeds and unplugged a USB printer (which was off anyway). I can't really reduce power consumption any more than that. I have a SATA and two ATAs for data, and a ATI X800(requiring molex), but my PS is rated 550 and I am not pulling anywhere near that. As I write this I am only using about .128kw (17% of max for my backup unit) and my 19" LCD is in there too.

When I started HOMM my draw shot up to .218 at times, .100 more than my baseline. Still not enough for me to suspect the power supply, and the processor temp. was only 43C. That's about 110F if my math is correct?

OK, so maybe I have a lemon graphics card, it is possible since I had to RMA the first one I got (Sapphire X800). But I had no problems until I ran HOMM5, which I grant is the most intensive thing on my system.

I am about to give up on this game, it has crashed on me since the initial release and I kept hoping a patch would change things. I am amazed many of you apparently have no issues with this..

Bring your machine to a professional PC service technician. I think there is a power distribution problem and, a definite incompatibility issue with one or more components in this very PC of yours. He might, even, find O.S. settings wrongly set as well.

My PC runs in the 25 to 30 degrees Celcius + plugged in a regular powerbar which in turn is plugged into a totally standard wall plug of 120watt output. This is not your video cards' fault nor, HoMM5's fault either.

Is the place, where your PC is situated, really cool and not too humid? It greatly helped me out towards keeping the machine at its' not too cool and not too warm level of optimal performance levels.

Reverted to old 9600 and game runs OK so far.
Either my Sapphire card was bad again or there is a problem with the X800 GTO and HOMM5 or Direct X. I think the issue was related to direct3D or pixel shaders. Final straw was when I crashed/rebooted at the start of test four of 3Dmark05. Also could only run AOWSM with Direct3D off.
