SST won't recognize my X-45

I am trying to replace my war-weary X-45 with one i got on ebay.
windows sees it clearly & it will calibrate perfectly. But SST just refuses to believe in its existence.
I deleted & re-installed SST 6.6.6.9, but same result. I have tried different usb ports, as well.
I do not get the tray icon. When i run profile editor, the "profile" button is grayed out. It sees my pedals just fine.

Any thoughts?

When you reinstalled the SST did you install the corresponding drivers? The SST is tied to the driver version, older drivers and newer SST doesn't work.

no.
Saitek forum is a wasteland & many here still use them. Besides, I got the correct answer in less than 30 minutes. Last time i posted at saitek, i got no response at all.
