Because, regardless of what the radio man tells you, the game only puts down contact reports for convoys and task forces. While it might actually send the report out for a single ship, and maybe get you a nearby ship or plane to attack it, it won't be listed on the clipboard. If you do call in a contact report on a convoy or task force, it will show exactly what you'd normally get in a radio message from BdU about it: size (small/large/no prefix), type (convoy/task force), grid square, heading and speed.

today i was cruising around Bergen, and for the first time received messages from friendly ships about contacts. Im wondering what the approach is after receiving one of these. It doesn't say anything about where the enemy ship is, just something like:

contact report from friendly warship,
XYX direction, XXYY grid....
(I think this is the info for the friendly)

cant remeber exactly...
and on the map all it shows is the friendly ship, not the enemy.

Should i bother going after it??? I tried once but by the time i got there it was gone. I found the friendly, but had no idea where the ship he saw went as it gave me no direction.

Any thoughts....Thanks in advance

I always radio report contacts too small for me to engage.
Usually no reply from BDU, but once (large group of ships?? don't remember).

Howewer, as i reported yesterday a single enemy merchant off Norway, they sent a lone Ju88 bomber.
It apperaed right after I had already sunk the enemy ship :-((

Th direction, speed, and heading should all be for the enemy ship(s). One knot is 1.8km/h. Using this info, you can plot a course on the map for the enemy convoy/ship and for yourself so that your paths intersect.
However, a grid is bloody huge (100+ times 100+ kms), and it's really difficult to tell WHERE in the grid they were spotted.
It would be much better to have longitude/latitude coordinates in the game.

They do, Irving, but the game only falls back on Lat/Long coordinates when you get beyond the grid squares. I intercepted a Murmasnk convoy once north of Iceland, and I had Latitude/Longitude marked in the captains log for the ships I sank there.
