Hey, I'm getting a PS3 for Christmas and will get Haze when it comes out but I wanted to know if having an HD TV really matters or not (I don't have one). My TV isn't **** either it's decent and is pretty big (we bought it in 2003). So should I worry about not having an HD TV or it isn't that big of a deal?

I voted yeah a lot, but I don't think it matters that much. It's a big difference, but if you have a CRT and saw some gameplay on it from the PS3, you can imagine it yourself. If not, I think you'll be satisfied with the PS3's performance even on the CRT. But you'll want to buy a HDTV sometime... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

It sure makes some difference. When I started playing on a HDTV I saw some difference but its hard to explain. But its not a must-have though.

HDTV gives you a higher resolution, so it should make for a crisper picture. The difference should be roughly the difference between playing a PC game on 1024x768 resolution versus playing that game at 1280x1024 resolution (but not quite the difference it is to play the game at 1600x1200 resolution, and PC games at that resolution- like Crysis- are just pwnage).

I voted yeah but not so much. I don't have a HDTV and i don't bleave my gaming experance has vastly changed. All a HDTV does is improve the graphics and graphics and graphics isn't everything to a game.

i said yeah a lot. i myself do not own a HDTV, but from experiences from playing the ps3 on a HD television, i can positively say that it looks much crisper and its easier to see distant enemies playing on one. At the same time, it is not necessary to purchase a HDTV, and the experience can be just as decent without one, i just prefer it personally. There has also been reports that some games have a better frame rate when using a HDTV, does any one know if thats true?

This is true, but the game has been designed specifically for a 720p HD image, so it's not quite as simple as saying HD is an improvement. It's more accurate to describe SDTV as a down-graded image. Having said that, devs test their games on multiple TV's and after a few notable problems early on, most of them seem to have got their head round multiple TV support. You should be able to play Haze fine, and enjoy the graphics perfectly well on an SDTV, you would simply enjoy them more on an HDTV. Compare watching a film on VHS and then DVD and you would see a similar difference I'd say.

It might be true. The reason is that such games run natively at an HD resolution and thus need to scale to fit a regular TV.

In terms of the resolution factor- it was something I keenly observed when I played Timesplitters (either 2 or FP) after having played a PC shooter for awhile. It just always instantly struck me how much harder it was to see and target far-away enemies, simply because the TV's resolution did not allow for a crisp enough picture.

So basically it does change the graphics and the gameplay a lot, but you can still have fun and enjoy decent graphics on a SDTV? Thanks for the help.

Well, I wouldn't say it will change the gameplay much, apart from TU16's point about targetting distant enemies being more difficult.

Yes, you need component cables at minimum, but HDMI is much better. They don't have to cost the earth either.

What you should see is a big increase in resolution, up to 720p or 1080i/p. You will need to hold down the power button when turning on the PS3 until a second beep, which should reset the PS3 and allow the higher resolutions, (you will need to do this each time you swap cables/TV's, or the resolution won't change and you probably won't get a picture). You will be given the option to change it on turning on. If you aren't seeing this then you're just running the games at the same resolution as your SDTV.
