I keep trying to jump from the first ledge to the plateau with the geyser. I have tried this about 25 -30 different ways and keep slipping over the edge. Is there some trick here?

I find it easier if I don't jump at all. I just run off the ledge and land on the plateau most every time.

(By the way, this is Eder Gira. You'll find Eder Kemo later.)

It helps me to hit the back arrow as I near the destination to avoid any forward hopping that might happen when I land.

It can be a pretty tricky jump. But, like Taerun said, simply running off the ledge rather than jumping is a good alternative as well.

Goes to his inventory.
Clicks - Use Rope With Rock pillar.
Clicks - Use Rope.
(climbs down rope)
Clicks - Look At Journey Cloth.
(Avatar tells me that is it a journey cloth)
Clicks - journey cloth.
--------

Whow, what am i doing?!
I really need to lay off the OldSkool Point and Click Games.
--------

Yea, just start at the ledge above the one you want to jump onto (the one that is across from it).
Then just RUN off the side of the cliff and you should fall rite onto the ledge with the cloth that you need to touch.

Actually, Kweaper, there are probably a fair number of folks here that might be interested in being able to play DOS point-and-click adventure games on their new, shiny PCs.

But they're liable to miss the reference in this thread. You could always mention it in the Off-Topic Zone.

Hijacking thread for a moment:
I recently downloaded some OLD Scott Adams text adventures. Imagine Uru in text-only format.

Actually, that's one of the KI eggs in Until Uru right now. On your KI type /look and you'll get a very Scott Adamsian description of your present location.

Okay.

Done hijacking thread.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming.

You make that jump yet, Rudysail?

Don't you mean Douglas Adams?

He he... Yeah, I remember the text version of Hitchhiker's Guide myself. I played it on a little Macintosh SE. It was absolutely silly fun, although I never finished it.

Where did you find the download? Note that the BBC site recently provided the original text game in a browser-compatible version on the HHGG page in their site. You couldn't save progress or anything, but it was fun to play the opening sequences again and reminisce.

Actually, I DO mean Scott Adams. He did a bunch of text adventures that I used to play on my old Radio Shack TRS-80 Model III. Adventureland, Pirate Adventure, The Count, Ghost Town, and a bunch of others.

Lots of fun. Text only.

Now, I didn't know there was a Hitchhiker's text adventure. I'll have to go find it now...

quote:
Actually, I DO mean Scott Adams.

Are you sure about that? Scott Adams is the cartoonist that does Dilbert. The late Douglas Adams wrote the Hitchhiker's Guide book series and a few other titles as well. He was the creative mind behind Starship Titanic too.

It's a different Scott Adams.

Here's a link: http://www.msadams.com/index.htm

There's some history on his influence over the PC Gaming industry and you can download most of his text adventures.

Now, though I've read all of the Hitchhiker's books, I never played Starship Titanic. I always wondered if I had missed out...

quote:
I never played Starship Titanic. I always wondered if I had missed out...

Starship Titanic was -- an experience! The whole premise was not that far removed from your typical adventure game, but gameplay was largely based on Douglas Adams' really eccentric mindset. Meaning, you kind of had to think like him to make much progress. Plus, much of the game involved interaction with the ship's robots via a chat engine. Imagine a hybrid of the old text games with the newer point-and-click games, and you get the idea. Simply put, the game was a huge hoot to play, but the hint book was mandatory!

Sheesh, looks like i started a classic game thread.

I think this post should be relocated to the 'Off-Topic' Section. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Probably should... except that Rudysail may come back here looking for more advice on his ledge-to-plateau jump...

Maybe I can move PART of this thread... Hmm.

Actually, the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy *is* available on the net as a free download. I downloaded it last year, and if I can remember where I got it from I'll post the link.

Are you talking about the ledge below the journey cloth? If you are, then just get the view to show the trapdoor, straight across, then run, don't jump.

HI RUDYsail
Since I had a big problem at that section due to graphic card needing to be upgraded, I was stuck on the ledge many a time.
Will not dare to say how many times!! So for me the easy way to do the jumping was as TAERUN suggest plus a little spoiler.
If you try the running, no jumping, option, make sure that you face the space between the cover and the vent hole and back up to the wall. I also beleive that one should also aligne the cursor in line with the direction you want to go. You will find the running/no jumping mode to work every time. Use the forward arrow and make sure you do not let go of the arrow until well in the air. It must absolutly be released before you land. If not you will go forward on landing and guess what. Also if you do not back up far enough against the wall then too bad!!!!! learn and re try.
GOOD LUCK TO YOU AND ANY TRAVELLERS WITH SAME PROBLEM

Since it was mentioned above, there is a flash-based version of Infocom's Hitchhiker's Guide game, sponsered by the BBC, right here (http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/hitchhikers/game.shtml). http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Edit: And having typed that, I just noticed the dates of those ealier posts. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif
