There have been a couple of posts regarding startup crashes. This is my particular issue.

Sometimes I can start the game with no problems, but the *majority* of times it crashes after the Ubisoft intro. The reason provided for the crash is always similar, eg:
AppName: sh3.exe AppVer: 1.1.0.1 ModName: unknown ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 0a6421a1

I have tried so many things to fix this, as follows:
1. Searched these posts and the web for suggestions http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
2. Updating all my device drivers.
3. Applying the "silent_hunter_3_dvd_1.1_emea" patch.
4. Reinstalling the game and accepting all defaults.
5. Reinstalling the game, accepting all defaults but use my secondary DVD drive.
6. Unistalling GameShadow.
7. Tweaking my XP install to within an inch of it's life.
8. Crossing my fingers and toes and vowing to be a better person if the game will run http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Can anyone offer any suggestions not already given in the posts? One thing I thought of was to re-install XP SP2, just in case a DLL has run away from home or something...

FIXED!!

Was installing new HDD and thought I'd try taking out my Hercules sound card and use the onboard sound instead. NO PROBLEMS SINCE!!

I am getting the same error right after the Ubisoft intro (It did work one time when I launched the game immediately after installation..not now crashes every time). I also am using a Hercules Game Theater XP.

At the end if the my windows error report the "db_31appcompat.txt" file was referenced. I searched for the file but it doesn't actually exist on my hard drive.
