At the risk of sounding hyperbolous(That may or may not be a word), this might be one of the best horror movies I've seen. Definitely the best in the last ten years. It's like the Blair Witch took steroids and some acting lessons.

The movie has jump scares, but it's more about the suspense. Throughout many of the nighttime bedroom scenes, the camera is positioned with with a perfect view of both the sleeping couple as well as the doorway of their bedroom, which is wide open to expose their darkened upstairs hallway. Every one of these bedroom scenes is gut wrenching. You KNOW something is about to happen, but you never know what. A lone light at the end of the hallway gives off the perfect amount of light, which will leave you straining to see something in the darkness.

This is the type of movie that I think is best to see in a packed theater. Half of the experience is atmosphere, and hearing the terror shrieks of the theater patrons around me was wonderful.

Of course, at the same time, this is the perfect movie to watch on DVD (or Blu-Ray) late at night with all the lights off, but we'll have to wait quite a awhile for that.

I'm not a big fan of new-school horror. Rob Zombie is a hack, and it seems everything that comes out is either some torture-porn SAW ripoff or a ****ty remake. This is neither. It is something different. It turns the faux-documentary style of Blair Witch and [REC] on it's head.

It's not playing in all markets yet, 12 to be exact - Boston, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Cleveland, El Paso, Hampton Roads metro area, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Pittsburgh, Portland, Salt Lake City (lucky me!), and Toronto. However, Paramount has marketed this movie so well, that it will probably open nationwide within the next two weeks. When it opens near you, GO SEE IT.

I totally wanted to see it the moment it came out, but was let down when I found out that it was playing nowhere near me. I will have to wait those couple of weeks http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-mad.gif

The way you described it made me want to see it even more! I can't wait http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Oh, and this made me laugh..

It's been playing here in Orlando also. I actually got a pair of complimentary passes from the movie's producers to attend the premiere. Unfortunately, I wasn't feeling very good, and wasn't able to make it. I am definitely interested in checking this one out.

I can't wait for this movie. The email I got yesterday, from their website, said that it would be opening nationwide on October 16. I was disapointed when I saw it wasn't playing anywhere in Arkansas at first. Happy I finally get to check it out http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

This movie sure manages to stick with you. I didn't think the movie had got to me, because these types of movies normally don't, but I got home and found myself jumping at every noise and shadow for the rest of the night. Most of that ended up being kitten, who I guess decided he wanted very badly for me to drop dead of a heart attack.

I was just reading over on i09 (http://io9.com/5375092/worlds-scariest-movies-director-to-make-worlds-scariest-alien-film) that the Writer/Director of Paranormal Activity Oren Peli is beginning production on a movie that takes place at Area 51 (called, what else? Area 51) and is going to be shot in a similar style to Paranormal Activity.

Is Paranormal Activity sort of filmed in the same style as REC? Because I loved that movie and the rawness it brought. It's my favorite horror Ive seen this year.

Has anyone seen the movie, Descent? OMG! Must see and turn off all the lights and don't read the back of the dvd. It's better not to know what you are about to watch.

JJ Rage
10-11-2009, 01:17 PM
It's definitely a similar style, although Paranormal Activity feels a lot more "homemade" than REC (or REC's inferior American counterpart Quarantine).

Plus with Paranormal Activity, the scares are about what you don't see.

Well I know what Im doing on Oct. 16th.

I also can't wait to see Where the Wild Things Are. I think that comes out the same day as PA.

I really hope it isnt a let down. I want it to be magical; a movie that becomes a classic just like the book.

I thought Quarantine was a great movie. It's the freakiest thing I've ever seen! But everyone I recommended it to hated it..idk if it was just the whole theater effect, but it seriously gave me the heebie jeebies.
Can't wait to see PA!

Saw it in Orlando. The seating arrangment was crazy and took awhile since they wanted everyone to sit a certain way.

The movie was definitely well made and the scares were not cheap.

I was only a little disappointed with the very end and anyone who has seen it knows why. Morgan was telling me that it actually wasn't the original ending seen in some screenings. Regardless, it has a good buildup and you'll have trouble not having an eerie feeling before going to bed.

The Descent is an awesome movie. Actually watching it right now on SyFy. So bloody!

I suggest getting there kinda early if it's a limited showing. Maybe even call the theater and see how they are doing it and take that person's name down.

It was a little weird here where there was assigned seating. Orlando was one of the early cities it started showing in and they were filming here at the time as well so it may be different at your theater. Just call the theater and make sure.

There are two endings, but the one in theaters now is the "new" ending. After Paramount picked up the movie, Steven Spielberg did some work on it and they shot a new ending. I imagine the original ending will be on the DVD release.

Was it a packed house?

And I'm sure they'll add both endings in the DVD release to make everyone happy. I am glad they didn't remake the whole thing like some people were saying they might do.

I'd face punch someone too if they dragged me to see that ****ty movie in a theater.

tibbsy07
10-12-2009, 08:18 PM
The Grudge scared the crap out of me. But it wasn't a good, satisfying scare. I knew every single plot twist and predicted every jump. My problem was that I expected the "jump" a split second too soon or late. Most movies have a count of sorts that you can do when you know a scare is coming, and it's easy to see what's happening. The grudge was like a Meshuggah song you've never heard before, the count was weird... so even though I knew she would turn around to face the ghost, I always missed it and jumped. Plus the voice-sound, creeped me the farns out.

Edit: A note... I don't like to be spooked. I don't like feeling like my heart just blew up. I like to be terrified, petrified psychologically. I like my mind to have to try and figure out what is happening. Cheap "BOO!" types scares just make me angry. Things that make my mind warp (Se7en anyone?) are the movies I like.

I've always loved to be scared while watching creepy movies.

When I'd watch scary movies when I was little I would get my dad to turn out the lights, sit right beside me, and before the movie would start I'd tell him not to forget to scare me - so throughout the movie he would grab me suddenly, and say 'RAWR!' - I would jump and scream every time and loved it http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Even now, at 25, I get scared and enjoy it. Sometimes I will even get scared in my house at night and have to run into my room and jump on my bed! Or when I'm trying to get my keys in the door, I will all of a sudden get scared and try to open it as fast as I can, then quickly close the door behind me. Once inside I will be shaky and out of breath.

It's silly and I don't know why I do it, but I've been doing stuff like that since I was little http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

I saw the movie earlier today and I couldn't help but think back to certain scenes while I was driving down a long stretch of empty road. What makes this movie unnerving is with what's not shown; it's all about suggestion and mystery that's only intensified by your now paranoid thoughts. What makes this movie disappointing is the very end. Highlight for spoiler:
It would have been better if you could hear their screams downstairs and then...complete silence, with the camera still fixed in its regular spot. You would still hear the heavy footsteps but that's it. Seeing the boyfriend thrown across the screen and his girlfriend snarl in the last frame clashed with what was up until that point, a movie that relied on imagery and sound that caused more dread than cheap shock reactions.
PS: Can someone remind me how to use spoiler tags...instead of typing in white?

I just got back from the theaters with my friend....and I must say are we the only two people really disappointed and bored in this movie? We mentioned half way through about walking out(Which i never usually contemplate) but we already payed so we figure we would Mystery science theater it to get some entertainment since we were the only 2 at the showing.

I just thought the scares and movie was too predictable, the main characters were unlikable and there was just a lot of nothing going on. I didn't even jump once...most of the times rolling my eyes and Alex and I turning to each other saying whats going to happen next.
Maybe I just went in with the wrong mentality or being overhyped by everyone saying "It's one of the scariest movies ever".

JJ Rage
10-28-2009, 04:05 PM
I would imagine a daytime screening in the middle of the week probably isn't the ideal environment to see it.

The terror of it, I think, is totally dependent of your ability to put yourself in the shoes of the couple. I didn't jump once, either. I don't think it's a "jump scare" kind of movie. It's more about tension and straining to see things down that darkened hallway.

You're not alone. I saw this last night, the late showing..and I was disappointed as well. It was a good movie..but with all the hype about how scary it was, I just expected a lot more. I mean, I heard people came out of the theater CRYING lol.
Like I said though, still good. The idea is incredibly freaky

Sometimes, publicity and hype hurts. I would only wonder, if people like Rick were to go see this movie without ANY info from the web or tv. Would they give the same review???

I doubt it.

By the time they decided to see this. They knew what was coming. Kinda ruins the fun doesn't it?

I always wonder about that too. I hated American Pie when I saw it because it just wasn't funny after EVERYONE made the same jokes over and over from it. It was like I had seen the movie without going to the theater. It's not really my type of comedy anyways, but I wonder sometimes if I would have liked it if I had seen it earlier.

I'll still probably see this, although my girlfriend won't see it and going to the movies alone is kind of boring. I may wait for the DVD

I agree Jess. .Horrid movie.

Wasn't scared 1 bit, nor was I shocked. It was all very much Led on, and wasn't suspenseful in the slightest bit. Acting wasn't even somewhat decent. I know it's hard to portray a First Person Perspective Movie, but come on. . Cloverfield was done better than this. This was a bunch of loud thuds, and some Baby Powder foot prints. Idk, it just didn't spark my attention at all. I sorta laughed when the BF was egging the Demon on, and sorta ****ing the GF off. . because Who would be this stupid to do this? Honestly?! GTFO!!! just My opinion though.

Idk, go see some Real Ghosts, they will scare the F out of you. <3 Real EVP's. . and REAL Shadow People. . . .Waverly Hills >

I didn't read throughout the whole thread cause I was worried about spoilers, but I've heard nothing but good things about this movie. I was skeptical about seeing it because it just didn't look that good in the trailers, but after hearing all these good things about it I might have to give it a try. I just hope it doesn't have that whole Blair Witch moving camera thing a lot. I'm assuming it doesn't because from the looks of it the camera is sitting in place a lot

I just saw this movie. I am so scared now. Any pretty lady want to hold me?

I think the main scare of the movie is that it's invisible and it can pretty much get to you where ever you are. Not the fact that it's not human.

I think people are generally afraid of danger they can't see or identify.

Lets take darkness for an example. People who afraid of the dark are probably afraid that they can't see in the dark and whatever can lurk in there. It could be a ghost, or a demon. It could possibly be a common burglar, or a rabid dog. Heck it could be a ninja elephant out to assassinate you, but the point is, you don't know whats hiding in the darkness.

That's just what I think though. I'm no psyche major or anything. Just good ole Pancake's opinions. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

My 65 year old Mother in law is going to see this with her sister.

I have seen a real ghost. On two seperate occasions. Couple of my family members say they had weird experiences before.

My mom told me once that she woke up around 3am one night and saw Jesus standing at the foot of her bed with his arms spread wide and a saddened look on his face.
Early the following day, her mother died.

My mom was not a religious person to say the least.

I totally understood the theoretical physics effects in this movie so it wasn't scary at all. Like when the door suddenly slammed shut and the couple heard a loud bang probably because when the demon's portal closed it created a vacuum thus accidentally closing the white door and making the demon angry so it bangs on the white door. I guess the more a person knows something, the less they fear it.
