I've finally begun a mission specifically intended to hit the Murmansk convoys. Left Lorient early April - PZ was CA85, between Norfolk and New York but I ignored that. Reached hunting grounds SE Jan Mayen around Mid-April. So far, hit one small westbound convoy, sinking a T3 and on May 1, hit a large eastbound convoy (fast - 12 kts) in deteriorating weather sinking a T3 and a C3. Fired two spreads and got one hit each on the targets. Currently pursuing the eastbound convoy trying to maintain contact. No sign of "friendly task force".

Will post some screenshots of the action at some point.

It annoys me that the assigned grids are so far wrong on these. It would be logical to start a Bergen based career that would attack these and yet I have had assignments off the coast of France in 43 from Bergen and similar assignments north from France, not right.
But, if you get the mod tools you can tweak your boat to have more range, do the assigned grid and get back to reality of a northern assignment. The fact air attacks will not occur at 2048TC means you can avoid death in those unrealistic areas then slow down the TC to a level where the planes will detect you.
Annoying one must do this when in reality you would have no such assigments.
How hard would have been for the devs to assign boats where those flotillas would have really operated?

If you use the SH3 Commander software, you can change your patrol grid before you embark. You can set it to whatever you like. Unfortunately, the only useful patrol grid you can use would be one in AE or AF - because, as you know, SH3 does not include the full Kriegsmarine grid system in the Arctic area - AA, AB, AC, AF, AG, AH, AR, AS, AT, AV, AW and XA grids - see maps below:

I wonder why these grids are not included? Especially as the game includes convoys and ports in these areas.

But, with SH3 Commander, at least you could give yourself a patrol grid that was en-route to Murmansk and get the renown for it http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
