You guys get a little snow and suddenly all my precious EPL games are called off. (http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010/dec/18/liverpool-fulham-wigan-villa-postponed)
The NFL at least does one thing better than the EPL...they don't let a little snow deter them.

American Football is ok.
My rule for sport is that it's only big and clever if there's a high risk of getting hurt or lots of violence.
Football consequently is boring and full of nonces.
I played a load of rugby up until about 14 but never put loads of mass on like the other lads. Gave it up as whilst I could dodge and outrun most of the guys I'd get ****ing flattened if one of the big guys tackled me. Watching Rugby when it gets properly nasty still gets the adrenalin going lol.

There arnt that many Rugby players that can bench press 500lb+ who would be useful to a team. Firstly all the players have to be agile and secondly steroids get you banned. The average for an international rugby player is 160-180kg.
I highly doubt those bench press numbers are your "average" NFL player. If so drug abuse is rife in the sport.

I'm guessing a bit here but I would not be surprised if it was very close to the average FOR THAT POSITION. Like you said, unlike rugby players American football players are VERY specialized and spend nearly all of their training time for a single position. When you're entirely focused on a very small skill set (either physical and/or mental) it's easy (<-Note that's a relative term in this context) to be insanely good at it.
With very little rest time compared to American football (American football being nearly 96% rest time over a 3 hour game) rugby players could not have the physique of American football players and be useful on the field.
Bottom line, apples to oranges comparison.
Also, just for the record, American football has had a supremely violent and deadly history. Starting in the late 1800s rule changes were rapid in the attempts to make the game safer. IIRC, there were 19 deaths one season near the turn of the century. Ironically helmets were not required until 20 something years later.

huh?? in my younger days i could bench press 300 pounds for several sets of 5 reps. i never did find out my max for one lift since 300 pounds was with every weight i owned on the bar.
i was by no means any kind of athlete, heck i wasn't even serious about weight lifting. i was just basically screwing around with it for only a few months. also im no where near as large as your average player.
so im pretty sure a pro football player with millions of $$$ at steak could do a heck of alot better than me.
in short, those numbers sound about right to me.

Ditto, only I did it as a 165 lb 35 year old; I'd finally reached the level of physical maturity that allowed me to put on some serious muscle weight (I never got over 135 until I hit 33, and I always had an appetite that matched hard working men twice my size), and I set a goal of benching twice my body weight.
Took me two and half years, during which the goal line moved from 280 to 330 lbs, but I did it. No steroids, just a lot of sweat and a long, careful build up (and literally tons of Mexican & Italian food).
Plus, I was still able to run a mile in under 5 minutes and swim the same distance in under 19:00 (life was GOOD when they let me have two hours for lunch).
Almost any level of fitness is possible to a man willing to spend four + hours a day working out.
Of course, a pro athlete still has to have special gifts; you can get stronger, and put on a certain amount of muscle, but only God can give you good coordination and make you big and fast.
I always wanted to play tight end like Charlie Sanders of the Lions, but God decreed that I should be 5'9", skinny and slow of foot in my teens and twenties, and no amount of gym time was going to change that.
cheers

Britain is utterly hopeless when it comes to dealing with snow. The media report the coming weather as if it's armageddon.
I'm afraid it's an attitude endemic of modern British society. We're now a nation of losers.
2 inches of snow will totally cripple the transport system and lead to panic buying.

I'm from a rugby town (hence my screen name), I've grown up playing rugby (winger) and I watch the local team whenever I can so I'm a bit biased. My lab manager is a scouser and we have many good natured arguments about which is the better sport, his main point is how many people in Britain follow football compared to rugby, my main point is that rugby players generally don't roll about like they've been shot whenever somebody farts in their general direction (yes I know about "bloodgate" but that is the exception rather than the rule).
Back on topic it is rather pathetic how everything has come to a standstill, it is also pathetic how many idiots (usually ****ed up chavs) who seen to think they can drive fast in those conditions.

IMO I wouldn't say in general the British people are losers (A lot may be, but a lot still aren't!), but the administrative side of Britain certainly is. Our support infrastructures are let down by useless bureaucrats who get to the top of overpaid posts by corruption, leg humping and a*** licking. It doesn't matter if they are bloody useless, they are protected by their cronies and those above them unless the **** really hits the fan. Efficiency, forward planning and common sense have become rare commodities in the local government of the UK.
I know the following isn't always the case (Aberdeen Airport is closed at the minute too), but my experience with snow depends where you live. A few years ago I did a journey from Aberdeen down to Sunderland in bad snow conditions, the Highlands were in a snow storm, but the roads were being kept open by constant gritting and ploughing (they knew what to expect up there and had budgeted and planned for it, 24 hours a day the gritters and ploughs were out when the weather was at it's worst). The rest of Scotland had slightly less snow but the roads were again in good nick, then I hit the English side of the border and it was a different matter, hardly any sign of gritting from Northumberland to Tyne and Wear, the difference in road conditions once I got over the Tweed really surprised me. The Scots hadn't been caught by surprise, but the English councils had.
We'd be better off getting rid of more of the overpaid council management and spending that cash for more equipment and men on the ground where they are really needed. In general we're too top heavy with management and paying too much of our budgets into the wrong places. It could be fixed, but seems so endemic now it probably won't be any time soon...

Should be 3 points in the bag against Brucie's boys, while the Arse and Chavsea cancel each other out on monday. City too wobbly to bank on against the Geordies, Villa/Spurs interesting. Would love the Tangerine Dream to continue against the Red Scousers, but can't see it - although stranger things have happened. Should be three points for the Blue Scousers against Brum. Potters to stick it to Rovers, while Wanderers v Baggies, Cottagers v Hammers and Wolves v Latics too close to call.

The commentary of EPL games is always by people at the stadium. Fox Soccer Channel I think just plays the broadcast from the UK so it has the same commentary you would hear. ESPN generally does only the first Saturday game and the Monday game and they seem to have their own commentary team for the broadcast back to the US, but it's Brits. Lately I think it's been Ian Darke and Steve McManaman doing their games. During halftime ESPN and FSC send it back to the studio which I guess is in the US and they generally have a couple American guys and a British guy but I skip through it on my DVR. So no they've never had an American do commentary for EPL games. During the World Cup they would mainly have Brits for the ESPN/ABC broadcast to the US though they would often put in John Harkes, an American, who was obnoxious. For some reason American commentators, even if they've been playing soccer/football for their whole life, treat any soccer/football game like it's an NFL game and do nothing but repeat illogical sports metaphors and pop psychology pablum. "What he needs to do is get his head into the game and give 100% for the team." "What he needs to do is step up to the plate and get a touchdown for the team." Etc. Brits just, ahem, comment on the game.
Good to hear about the weather. Wimps!

You guys get a little snow and suddenly all my precious EPL games are called off. (http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010/dec/18/liverpool-fulham-wigan-villa-postponed)
The NFL at least does one thing better than the EPL...they don't let a little snow deter them.

the players of NFL might be big & tuff , but the game is played like its little girls on the feild
each play is bearly 10 seconds long & then they stop & have a rest
& besides that they are covered in padding so the poor dears dont hurt themselves
there was a time when it was the men who were made of steel & tools were made of wood . rugby is a game for that time

That was a great game, best I've seen in a while. I practically need a cig after that.
What a good and open season this is turning out to be, lots of potential title contenders. It probably means the English game is suffering a bit in quality but it makes the EPL a lot more interesting.

I have to laugh at the way the British can't handle a bit of snow. I was out and about in my car in a full fledged blizzard ( whiteout conditions ) back in November, here in Utah. I did have a bit of trouble when I got about a 1/4 mile from home when I could not see the roundabout where I had to make a 90 degree left at. I found it alright, I hit it dead center!! Could not see anything but streetlights at that point and that was just barely. I did make it home that night, although my car had to have a wheel alignment from "finding" that roundabout the hard way! But I managed to get that for free with a new set of Goodyear tires. Or tyres as you brits spell it.

EPL football is gayness personified. In fact, I retract that, that's an insult to gay people. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif Rugger lad (Union) by trade here, but have a lot of respect for Gridiron and have played it too....Its a tough game.
Lots of teams in the UK, mine were the Tyneside Tigers (now defunct I think) and the Gateshead Senators (they play at Gateshead International Stadium). I got hooked on the NFL as a kid after watching Joe Montana on the UKs channel four, favourite player of all time. Barry Sanders my favourite ever running back, Ronnie Lott favourite defender (yep long time ago!).
This kind of crap with 'bad weather' is happening in UK schools now too, for 'health and safety' reasons. Its going to turn us into a Nation of wimps. PAH! When I was a kid we played rugger on fricking virtual Ice rinks....I was once in fact decapitated in a Daily Mail Schools Cup tie but the school nurse just sewed my Dome back on. 10mins later, right as rain. Walk it off boys, walk it off. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif
What is even more annoying RE: schools is this PC 'everyone's a winner' new ethos they are bringing in, WTF is all that about? Awww, if the poor things 'lose' it might hurt their 'self esteem'! P*ss off, that's not how life works, and not good preparation for reality.
Gridiron is cool though, its like human Chess....very tactical. I played Strong Safety and sometimes Inside Linebacker for 2 seasons, full kit too. I still have my Riddel 'Air' Helmet in the loft, happy days. Nothing better than annihilating a skinny wideout on a short 5yd hook pattern with a 10-15 yard run up....Boom! Pick yer head up son. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif
Rugby is the harder game though, no doubt about it. I've had my nose broke 5 times, more knee injuries than enough, and have more battle scars than is even funny. Doesn't bother me anyway, as an admittedly Ugly Bastard already, it was never going to spoil my looks. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

But nah, I like both mate....never played League though I like watching it. Found a funny vid on YT with a scrap between Gordon Tallis and Terry O'Connor, remember them? Honours even I reckon, though maybe O'Connor edged it. Top entertainment, both bona fide hard b*stards.

To be fair an NFL game was recently cancelled in Philly, but to be fairer this is the kind of snow they were dealing with in the area:
