While talking to ScWorld, i realized how fragile the World was, Just one tough, if the Top 12 Servers were killed, The World gets into Chaos.

Imagine a world without internet, without computers and without communications. How would the compagnys work ? How would the face of the world change ? I dont see myself sending a letter to one of you guys in europe instead of chatting.

Maybe Ubisoft tough that way when they made the Chaos Theory http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Well basicly when there isn't an internet, when there are no computers but when there is no modern comunications anymore! I think we live in a time long ago again, but with the knowlidge of modern times. But yes you are right it would be disastres for this world, thinking of you can't play splintercell anymore http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif , but instead going out youre homes and play outside with youre friends.

But I think it is hard to predict how the world reacts if such things happen.

what are the odds of that happening really? and what would be the point of shuting down the internet. Sure it would be a pain in the behind, but It would be fixed pretty quickly, i mean honestly, the goverment can barely run with all the technology, do you think they would just go 'oh well, no internet anymore, Becky what's my schedule like today?'

...but I think its safe to say there would be a very BIG reaction.

Yup, Imagine a group of terrorists destroy the cables from USA to Europe, and shut down the top servers and the top DNS servers.

DNS is the definitions of the . Its not even .com, its .

If the "." gets shut off, no website, no ips. nothing can show up, since all ips are in this format : XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX the dots wouldent mean anything anymore, and the packets would lose themselves around the globe.

Nearly all Phone communications that goes from long distances are routed trough IP.

Let's just say it would be a big chaos.

Interesting discussion, would definitely probably look something like the game then eh?

DNS = translation of google.com to 216.239.37.99 .
The (according to some documents) top of the internet-hierarchy (servername, range, top level domain, top (something like this)) is often attacked (reason why the network that we use is down, we will probably switch to another supplier). Japanese hackers who DDoS the root servers http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif ... Yak!

@Raisinbrain: Nah in rl you can't start a level over and over again if you die http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

But is would be a great mess, donnow how big but big.

DNS = Domain Name Server. Internic handles this. Basically, your name servers (in my case, mine are 70.81.221.24 & 70.81.222.1) are translated into domains. Basically, it will look something like this:
http://www.nso-networks.com -> 70.84.xx.xx/xx/xx.xx
In a nutshell, it translates an IP to a Domain that is stored in the database. I can't tell you exactly how it works, but I can give you a basic idea.

As for your question on if there was no internet(s), there is no theory on this. If there was no internet, anything that is in the slightest way linked to the internet and how it works would not exist. Folding @ Home would not exist, Cancer research would not exist. Lots of Government parties would not exist. Advanced communication would not exist. Hell, what is world without goatse, SomethingAwful and CNN? Yeah, absolutely nothing.

Really indersting conversation ,but unlikely thought...

Not so unlikely, if i head over to verisign and blow them up, internet would be completly destroyed. All Computers would be nameless on the network, meaning nobody can communicate.

There are many other registries for VeriSign http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif But they are one of the biggest.

hate to break it to ya guys but destroying the internet isnt as easy as you are making it sound. primarily because what you are trying to do is make a few select destructive insertions in order to bring the whole thing down. This is by its very nature very easily corrected. have you guys been without internet for a few days? of course you have it happens to us all and it doesnt stop us from going to work and living. destruction of the 12 main servers would just mean they would have to setup another 12 main servers, amazing that its possible to replace machines... because it is. so the only real way to cause complete havoc would be to pretty much simultaniously destroy every major router/dns server in the world at the same time including most of the subnets. and even then as people started replacing peices of it it would start coming back online. the major DNS servers only contain the names of lesser subnets below them, they do not as it has be suggested hold the names of every server in the world because that is not practicle and it is not a scalable system which would have caused the death of the internet in its infancy stages.

Correct, but it would cause havoc for some time.

I'm with Lucky. The world CAN survive without internet. Even if you could permanently destroy it, the world will survive. There might be a mini economic crisis while businesses get used to doing things the old fashioned way again, but they would recover.

Now, if you could disable every computer permanently, that's a different story.

Well, simply code an algorithm that does the trick and see what happens!
