View Full Version : The psychology of pwnage

We have a no GL and no MGL rule on the wgc servers, very thoroughly displayed with pretty icons and all, so everyone should be able to read it, no matter what language they speak.
But still, as people are losing in DM, they start (ab)using these things. And that's not the worst, the hax accusations fly wild. "hax this hax that". Well. We're lucky to have very few cheaters in this game, and it really stinks to be called cheater just because you happen to be good, I tell you. I get that several times per day. And I'm sick of hearing that and seeing those nades fly.
Worst are the dudes who look at the stats and say "I don't believe that, you haxed!". Or, at the end game when they realize they won't win pull an MGL. I won't name anyone. Those of you who play a lot know who they are. And I'm REALLY tired of hearing stuff like that and seeing the nades fly by.
But that seems to be it, the psychology of pwnage: It's easier to break house rules and/or call others cheaters than to accept that you need more practice and that others actually are better than you, apparently.

Come over to the other side and play player-matches. Nobody uses the MGL.
I don't care abouth the GL on most maps. I have used it myself a lot. I don't understand why you would ban the GL and not the as50. They are both to easy to use and I'm sure the as50 is easier. I'm not a sniper but have no problem hitting 5:1 ratio's with the as50. Try that with the GL....

Just use PB to enforce a server banlist. Soon you will only have quality players able to join. All the jokers will get auto kicked.

We do use ban lists, however I don't kick/ban jerks who accuse others of cheating. The best medicine against those guys is just meet their accusations with argumentation, and let them make asses out of themselves.

I get accused of cheating daily. People just don't know how to use the most important thing of all: COVER!!!! Most people also don't realise how important it is to upgrade your rifles and getting to know the maps.

Aaaah... I am yet to be good enough to be accused of cheating.
But when that time comes I will rejoice http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif.

i can't play any more unless i host a server since i get banned from other ppls servers. Even when hosting unless i give the players at least a 5 kill lead(minimum),they all leave. I have to resort to not using sights and firing every second shot over their shoulder just to make them feel like they're beating someone whos fighting back thats why i just play with the map editor now.

I wish it would be truth. We run player matches dedicated server with rules "No GL/MGL" (popup every minute by automessage) and sometime is disaster to even enter our server, becuase I cant play but only warn and try kick out (or ban if ned it) those who break rules.
We use Extender, but sometime it doesnt work, so I really cant wait to patch which hopefully make admins tools for server much better. Or could someone advice us (and many others as well) how to set up PB web toll for FC-2 ?
If you ( Rentil, M-Veg and few other with good knowledge http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif) can advice us how to set it up, I will be very gratefull to you http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/metal.gif

there was a thread a while back that had the webrcon details and we used to some success when we had a clan server running:

My clan =NpS= gets accused of cheating 24/7, on our servers but also on other people's servers. We get banned on regular basis so all we can do is play on our own. We even got called cheaters when we were having a scrim against another clan (not calling names). honestly at first it made me feel pro but now it's just getting annoying. I'd rather hear people tell me that I'm good instead of telling me I cheat. Like it's a bannable offense to be better than someone.

Online is overrated.
The things that online gamers don`t tell you about Online pitfalls...
1. Cheaters.
2. Time wasters.
3. Players who can`t accept that they are not Ace when facing other Humans.
In my experience you`ll get a good game 1 out of every 5-6 times you play. the rest will be ruined by the above. This ratio of bad games seems related to the technicality of the game. If it`s an easy FPS then expect a lot of trouble. I have just given up playing Left4Dead forever because I got sick of the team-killers (and delay team killers which are even worse) and the time wasted.
There`s a reason why I only play ONE game online. That is IL2 a simulation of aerial combat. Sims tend to have less childishness, especially if you stick to a squad, but the difficulty of learning to fly along with the difficulty of just shooting a friend puts off the time wasters. Anything else I play is Offline because it`s far more enoyable to play against dodgy AI than an annoying player who comes Online to quit/cheat/teamkill because he can`t hack fair gameplay.

FC2 MP is fun, most due to the effort of the server admins. They put in a lot of time and effort to make the play a rewarding experience.
Back to the subject ...
There are several players that always seem to get 50+ kills almost every match and can sometime reach and/or exceed 100 kills. Even very experienced players and server admins seem to think something is fishy with what is going on with these players some of the time. I think it is probably a combination of skill and luck (luck = good spawns and "winning end of lag").

50-100 kills in deathmatch would be suspect since its so chaotic. In team deathmatch however good players can read a game very easily.
Things like good sound cards and headphones give easy tracking of anyone close by,watching where your teammates go and keeping an eye on the kills to see if they die.
As seafire said simple games do contain more idiot players, the best game i ever played online was mechwarrior4/mercs. The community was very competitive but also very respectful to each other to the point where tactics that were allowed in a world class league where not used out of respect to the other teams.
Although it wasn't implemented for this exact purpose ubi still intentionally aimed for this type of player base, since they figure if idiots can play anyone can play = more $.
