I'm still waiting for National White Male Day and getting kind of grumpy by its conspicuous truancy. Hopefully the growing movement behind "Steak and BJ" day will settle that. It's the male version of Valentine's Day: whereas on V-day we have to take our women out for an expensive dinner and buy them chocolate, on Steak and BJ day they get to reciprocate by cooking us steaks and giving us...well...you get the idea http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

A standard liberal argument. Apparently you've never watched a Hispanic friend of yours get into the same schools that rejected you, despite your higher test scores and GPA.

And of course, labeling it as such makes it wrong.

I love people who argue with labels. It makes things so much easier.

That proves nothing. Every system has weaknesses. I could respond by saying that I know people who are black, or who are women, who have been discriminated against. Neither argument is convincing because neither argument proves anything more than we already know. We know discrimination occurs, and we know that no system can fully balance the situation, and that overbalances occur. But that's no reason to get rid of a system that does have the effect of modifying a systemic problem. The problem is much greater than the flaws inherent in the solution, and until we do away with discrimination (don't hold your breath) we will have to impose some kind of artificial balance. Some people are going to be hurt by that, but far more people are going to be helped by it.

What would be your solution for the systemic bigotry that is routinely encountered by women and minorities? Don't even try saying it's not a problem, because I have my own experience of it.

Forgive me for the labelling. I've spent 21 of my 22 years as a conservative in blue strongholds, so I do tend to label, having heard every argument so many times. It's a bad habit that I really should kick.

Injustices do exist in America, but I cannot agree with affirmative action on either a logical stance or a realistic stance. Logically, I cannot see how one can remove racism by supporting racism. Anytime you base a decision on race or use race as a factor, that is racism. There is no such thing as reverse discrimination; it is all discrimination, plain and simple.

From a realistic standpoint, however, the situation is even worse. Blacks, the main beneficiaries of the Philadelphia Plan, are worse off now than they were after the Civil Rights movement but before AA (academically speaking). More blacks are attending college but fewer are graduating. The fact of the matter is that AA is sending underqualified blacks to schools that they aren't prepared for. Instead of helping them, AA is actually causing them to drop out at shockingingly high rates which certainly isn't helping their plight.

Furthermore, white males and even many white females are beginning to resent this government-enforced racism. Black-white animosity is reaching levels not seen since the early '70s.

Please don't mistake my opinions for racism or bigotry. I truly do wish that racism and sexism didn't exist. I fear that AA is a self-defeating plan, and worse, I think it is only fueling the problem rather than mitigating it.

On a side-note, Beeryus, it is nice to see that there are individuals on this forum who can debate without fighting. I commend you.

Racism is a self-defeating proposition. Consider racism in the business world. A company that hires on merits will likely do substantially better than a company that hires because of racial preference. A company that refuses to hire based on merits will eventually weed itself out. It may take some time, but I fear nothing more than government intrusion on domestic issues, especially when neither the American people nor their representatives have voted on it. If one of the two aforementioned bodies were to vote and enact an affirmative action program I may disagree, but I would support it. Government-enforced racism created by an executive order from one of the most unscrupulous presidents in our history (Nixon) is something that I can never support.

That's because she is actually a vampire http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I saw Underworld movie and gosh, it became emmidiately one of my favorites movies of all time.

Now that I own the movie I made some screen grabs of it. In this picture, Selene (Kate Backinsale) is shooting in the head of an almost dead werewolf laied on floor... Coutless times...

The character she plays is trully amazing... For starters, she is quite beautifull, but not in an exagerated way. I love her dark hair and white skin, her rebelious personality and her sense of justice.

There is something in this movie which I cannot explain... Its athmosphere is breathtaking, same goes for Selene's characterization. When I first saw it, my wife said I looked like a statue, giving no signs of life at all. I only know that it really got me... No other movie caused me such impression, except Alien Series and LOTR...

Where are you from by the way?

It is? I haven't noticed I guess. I like our system how it is, and so does everybody I know. I have never heard a friend complain that he or she lost a job due to "affirmative action". Our country works, as far as I'm concerned, and I won't think otherwise until it affects either me or my friends (of all races and genders). Either way, this is not a discussion for the Silent Hunter 3 forum...but neither is "National Womans Day". That said, women are hot, good day.

I think we can discuss here what ever we want as I saw no rule against this, plus, this forum does not contain a section for "General Discussion".

This is a forum related to SH3 yes, but the game as not being release yet. So, ppl post their "ramdom thoughts" here. This is also the main reason why this comunity grown so big and is so active, which is a good thing in my humble point of view
